Orc priests are great fun, yes. Water walking has its uses; in a number of places you will need some way of crossing bodies of water, be it by swimming, flying or blinking. It's not really a great or powerful ability, but once you get it it's always on, and makes some areas less of a hassle. I think it's mostly a thematic thing, really. You're orc Jesus.

If you worship Fedhas, you get the ability to upgrade the toadstools into wandering mushrooms. And speed the decay of corpses, meaning that as soon as you kill an enemy, you can sprout about three fungi from his corpse.

So, I've finally gotten a decent start on a DEWi in 6.0, was trundling through D:7 when I found my second spellbook.  I was all excited... until the game said that it was "beyond my current level of understanding."  I've not seen this before, what have I gotten my hands on?

Also, what does it mean when a spellbook is "beyond my skills"? Need more Spellcasting to read it? I've found two of those so far. Can't remember this happening back in version five.

That means it's either the Book of Annihilations, the Book of Demonology, or the Necronomicon. You need 6 Spellcasting skill along with 10 Conjurations for Annihilations, 10 Summonings for Demonology, or 10 Necromancy for the Necronomicon. If you worship Vehumet, you can always read Annihilations and Demonology and if you worship Kiku, you can always read the Necronomicon.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Well then, it can't be Annihilations because I have 11 Conjuration.  That makes it a bit of a thing though, since I was planning to worship Sif.  I can train up Summoning with spammals, but I don't have a necromancy spell to abuse yet, and any one of those books is too much power to waste. I guess I could train up summoning and worship kiku, but I don't have any real luck with playing necromancers, I'm pretty bad about preparing for the negative effects some of their spells can have.

You're going to need the ten levels of skill anyway to be able to cast the super-powerful spells with anything resembling reliability. I think Sif is a pretty great god, with the energy channeling and the free selective amnesia you get. The spellbook gifts are less reliable, but there's MORE of them.

Yeah, if it is the Necronomicon, I'm not nearly strong enough to handle it.  There's a couple lower level spells in Demonology that could be useful, so I guess I'll rock out the summon training under Sif, and hope I get a necromancy spell gift if I do have the Necronomicon.

EDIT: Just id'd the damn thing. Demonology. Great success!

Aye, abjuration and recall are fairly good, recall more for necromancers though, and call imp is a generally useful spell, just not wonderful.

Does 7.0 have the temple? I've never found it.

Dunno, I just started messing with 6.  I think this character might be able to go the distance if i have any luck finding something with repel missiles and some resist gear. But I'm betting the my lack of lategame experience is going to bite me in the ass soon.

Just tested 0.7 , not yet the classic game mode to see if i find the temple, as i just played the new game type "Dungeon Sprint", and wow when they said it was hard, they were not lying , it seems plain insane in fact :

1st try : opening the first door : Ijyb appeared, then while fighting him, an Ogre and Sigmund came from another door and they obliterated my demigod fighter.

After a few more try, managed to kill those 3 (seems Sprint does not have random dungeon layout as i always have the same start) with that demigods, thanks only to the berserk potion and the healing one (and the random generation that did not give Ijyb a wand to blast me with).

Went directly to level 5 with this.
Unfortunately a few rooms later, an Amoeba , demigod level 5 with only a small healing potion stood absolutely no chances.

Yeah, Sprint is BS. There's just no way to get by unless you're stealthy or trolly.

Yes, the concept sounds fun, but it is not balanced enough yet to be actually of any fun.

The farthest I've gotten in Sprint was with a spriggan assassin, I think. After Ijyb, the troll and Sigmund, the room to the east contains the giant amoeba, and the room after that has some kobold demonologists among other things. The room to the south has a jelly, and the room to the south of there has Sonja. The room to the west of the Jelly room has centaurs. The jelly room and the amoeba room both have altars so you can pick a religion. Oh, and the troll room has a hidden door with some gold behind it.

And yeah, I don't think it's supposed to be possible, or at least feasible without a lot of luck. It is trying to send a message to the Crawl playerbase, and that message is "Just try and solve THIS ONE, suckers!"

Sprint reminds me a bit of the excellent Desktop Dungeon, that unlike the current version of Sprint is extremely fun at this kind of 1 level concept because of its very good balancing and design.
If the crawl developers are willing to give more focus on its development instead of just putting impossible odds unless you play a specific race and a specific class, or just even more insane luck than it is needed to grab the orb of zot, it could be a very good Crawl game mode.

Anyways :

I have played a bit with 0.7 and in my latest game i just found the temple from a stair on level 5 of my dungeon.
Though in my previous run i didn't noticed it.
