Aye, what Mr.Person said.

There are 17?ish runes, and only three needed to get the orb. If you worship Luguno, then you can get the abyss rune "easily". As for the rest, well, basic RPG knowledge will tell you that going into the Hive without Poison Resist or Slime Pits without Rcorr is suicide.

I was just playing a game with a minotaur berserk I was at dungeon level 2 I was level 2, I came across this humanoid didn't bother to check what it's called.

So I thought: "Oh it's just level 2 how tough could it be?"

I rapidly clicked the arrow key.

It killed me. it was a wight.

I wonder what's the reaction of the poor saps which came across yaks.

Hax yax yaks yikes

Hit [ a -> a ] if you encounter something strange as a beserker.

I have a hate for the unique name Agnes. Bitch keeps killing my dudes that go through the orc mines.

Got a really great run (with lots of luck most of the time to escape some certain death) as a Death Knight mummy, instead of taking necromancy, i started with Yredelemnul instead.

Ended at level 11, down into the orc mines killed before my teleportation scroll took effect.
A really really stupid death that was lead by me running into a teleportation trap that put me into impossible odds being already badly wounded.

Difficult run because i must say i never found "wow awesome" weapons and armor at all, only basic stuff, i had to waste all my enchant weapon/armor on them to get the illusion of having decent equipment, as it would have been too difficult without the bonus hit and AC help.

And of course, when i finished to enchant my normal axe to the maximum i could ... i found a axe of electrocution on an Orc. Damn ugly random number.

To be honest i think that damn random number actually hated my character, because i found money, enough money to buy some half-decent something, or even a barely usefull scroll .
And during the whole run, i found 3 shops.
3 shops selling .... potions.
With my character being a mummy ... potions (if you don't understand the sadism of the random number on this ... a mummy can't drink potions)

The only way my mummy survived was by using the old basic stair tactic with undeads.

With the special ability i was raising undead from killed corpse, left them on top of the stair, went down, attracted those monster i couldn't defeat alone, go back to stair, and hopefully overwhelm such monster.

(how much i wish it was possible to have undead following you instead of having to use that stair tactic for those pack of too strong yaks and other kind of too hard for my character monsters).

But like for the vampire, how much interesting it is to never have to bother with hunger.
And especially in the case of the mummy that is unable to drink anything when trying to rest to heal from all those monsters attacks.
Will have to try a Troll next time, to see how annoying hunger can be.

Didn't even noticed that while i was fighting in the orc mines, Yredelemnul granted me its 4th and 5th power.

What i noticed is that my character at its level 11 and equipment was apparently unable to defeat on a strict 1 on 1 an Orc Warrior, i always had to retreat to stairs when facing one.
I  guess this problem comes from my equipment was just plain bad (out of the nice +6 dexterity ring).

I don't even imagine trying to kill an Orc Knight then.
Oh, and this character defeated Sigmund (thanks to a fire wand) , so that was a good time :)

YES I KNOW, I'm guessing the undead nots following down stairs is the dev's way of balancing the game so you don't end up with over 100 zombies in one area, but after my first necromancer I stopped playing them.

Makes them a bit less fun.  :(

It was done to nerf MuNe, but it hit every other sort much harder.

Yes, in later level, if you did not have the luck to find the better necromancy books that has alternative to those summon undead, it was not fun anymore at all to play a necromancer.

I believe a better idea would have been to put a limit on the amount of undeads one necromancer can use at any time (based on the necromancy power, giving another reason to have high necromancer power instead of mixed spell schools if you intended into being a summon based necro), instead of preventing your already weak undeads to follow you and help against the progressively stronger and stronger enemies.

Because in lower floors and branches of the dungeon, if you have not found higher level of necro spell to summon other things, it is making the summon based necromancer less fun to play as it forces you to the "stair tactic" only.

...or just focus on different summon types, like ethereals and abominations (which are stronger anyways).

But yes, it does put a significant damper on picking the low-level summons.  In fact, it's probably better to ignore them entirely and work off of your other necromantic abilities until you can work your way up to the bigger baddies.  On the plus side, this does make Kikubaaqudgha much more interesting for necromancers.

The problem with the others is that the starter necro book doesn't include them. If it included ANY other way to make minions, it wouldn't be too big of a problem, but it does require a great deal more luck then say a summoner or fire elementalist.

Yes, thinking of being a summon based necromancer and just finding the high level necro books by pure luck is not really-viable as a strategy (like anything involving luck ;) anyways).
Having the lower and very weak basic summons being game crippled by design (in comparison to other classes weak and very basic summon) forces the summon-based necromancer to be a Kikubaaqudgha follower to be viable in the long term, as you need to be sure to find those high level necromancy book that will teach the other kind of summons.

Of course you could play other kind of necromancer, mixing spells, but if you really want to walk the summoning path, there is currently not a lot of choice.

Experimenting in wizard mode to see what effects had the Yredelemnul powers i had not the time to use with my previous mummy (drain lifeforce and enslave souls).

I just recieved the Enslave Souls from, and decided to test it on a Hill Giant.
Enslaved his soul apparently as a message "blablabla soul is ripe for the taking" appeared, but that did not prevented the Hill Giant to hit me (and they can hit hard), fortunately i had a very strong Skeleton Warrior recieved as a gift that helped me to take the monster down.

I looked on the wiki and saw that it was not helping :
Quote
Yredelemnul's ability to permanently Enslave Souls enables you to get a singular, decently powerful undead version of a single living humanoid. This requires a very large Invocations skill, but it can even enslave Tiamat! Please note that if no Scroll of Vulnerability is used, the victim's soul may be mongled into becoming a weak abomination. Also note that when used properly, the resulting spectral horror keeps its old gear on it.

So how does it really work ?
From the message, it seemed to have worked (never seen any "Scroll of Vulnerability" since i play that game) , but even after killing the hill giant i noticed nothing more, and raised it apparently like any undead, nothing seemed to make it different.

If you cast Enslave Soul on a creature and kill it quickly enough, then the creature has a chance of coming back as a friendly spectre, otherwise it comes back as a small abomination. Some creatures are immune, like things that are mindless (no Royal Jelly), undead (no Boris), and, for no particular reason, hydras (no Lernaean Hydra). On the plus side, if the creature had spells, it can still cast them. This includes things like smiting and raising the dead.

Hmm...I've never been a big fan of CCGs - I mean, I did and still do collect Pokemon cards, but I never got heavily into the battling and trading thing.

By definition that makes you a fan since you still buy them.

Pretty sure that the creature has to have not taken much damage or it'll fail with a message like "FOO's soul is too damaged to enslave!"

This is pretty much the only classic roguelike I can still play. I played a lot of ToME, but besides being able to sell things it's just so much easier to have fun in crawl. I guess the magic items in crawl are kind of lacking as well.

So far I haven't been able to get a character past level 2o or get more than one orb, but I've gotten one with

Orc Hunter
Naga Venom Mage (Slow God)
Centaur Posion something
Kobold Artificer
Dwarf Paladin
Green Draconian Transmuter (the natural posion resist was the most lucky thing that has ever happened to me in crawl. I constantly shoot poison potions near myself)
