Man, that was the most epic minitomb ever.  You start in a room with a glass wall between you and a tonne of treasure.  You can head left, but you are apparently blocked.  However, you can search for secret doors to take you all the way around a big loop, until you get to the treasure (there are tonnes of traps and zombies in the way, and a couple of mummies too).  How did I know where the secret door was every time?  Passive mapping.  Thanks so much.  And it says my passive mapping ability just got better.

You have to be at "Full", "Very Full", or "Satiated" hunger status to wield a vampiric weapon. Then, it takes away a large amount of nutrition upon wielding, but only that one time. After that, it no longer makes you hungrier faster like how it did in 0.5.2, where it caused you to burn nutrition over time by holding it in your hands.
Thanks for the precision, i was very unsure to what Full was refering to.

I had an interesting run, using a classic human fighter again, as i met some nice items early and i was overall pleased by the progress of this warrior that i thought could very well go deeper in the dungeon.

In the 2nd floor i managed to find an altar of Okawaru that my character decided to worship, as the goal was to gain some close battle help.
As it was early, my warrior then managed to kill and make enough corpses sacrifice to earn "Might" from the pleased Okawaru rather quickly, leading his strength to reach 22 when the power is used.

So all was good and all, until sadly in the 5th floor i opened a door to a room that walls were very different from the rest of the dungeon (and so that intrigued me).
Behind that door was so a very small room, with an altar.

An altar to The Shining One.
Until there, no real problem.

But in the room there was someone, an Angel.
Noticing i was only level 5 despite my good equipment for this level, there was no way my character could hope to defeat the Angel, as apparently he was going directly for me.
The thing was faster than me and i had no teleporting tool this time.

As the stair was way too far, i had to run into the unexplored area, hoping to find a lucky stair or hatch.
Unfortunately as one learn quickly, in Crawl when you need luck, you will not have any :D
The Angel then whip-ed my character to death without a problem.

I read the Angel entry on the wiki after that.

Wow, not only i met one at the 5th floor of the dungeon, being myself only level 5, but it is supposed to be very rare.
Definitively the random number wanted to kill my character, there's no other way :D

Angels, heheheh.. good times. I remember digging one out way back when and getting slaughtered.  I just wanted to pray at the altar!!

Kind of strange how they're hostile.

Tried for the 1st time a Beogh Orc priest, only met 2 orcs willing to follow me early (and they died due to an Ogre), all the other have been extremely hostile.

But out of that very bad luck in getting followers, that Orc managed to reach level 10, only to fall after running away from a seven headed hydra (just noticed how hugely powerfull that thing is ) that was friend with a wyvern.

The Orc managed to reach a stair and escape the hydra, but the wyvern managed to follow him.

Already badly wounded and because i didn't thought about trying to use one of my teleportation scrolls, that stupid mistake lead the poor promising orc into a yet another stupid death.

Edit: just looked through my equipment and noticed I had the wrong ring on. I thought I had sustenance on but instead I had ice which is not good for fighting fire type creatures at all.

So after losing my death knight to the orc mines (got through the first level, but got swarmed on the second) I created a vampire chaos knight. Now that I've leveled, I can't figure out how to turn into a bat. I know I have to be satiated or hungry to use it, but the help file says to use the 'a' key. All I can cast from there though is inflict pain from Makhleb.

It's in August every year. Only four months away and I promised I'd win before that so I could do it in the tournament! Eeep. What I've managed this far is losing my touch completely and dying at few hundred points repeatedly.

But oh yeah, regarding the tournament, I mentioned it (amongst other cool things I have been able to take part in through the forums) to Toady in my donation e-mail some months ago and the short exchange went like this, which was fun to hear:

That's cool, I did not know that Toady played Crawl. Hope I can get a win in myself by August. My only problem is my Obsession with summoning magic which oddly works better with wizards than actual summoners.

Works better than summoners? How so? I'm curious. Maybe it's because wizards are more likely to have high Spellcasting (less food) and more backup spells?


I've been trying to play as a deep elf wizard, which seems like a great combination in general. I swear, though, that I would die like crazy if it weren't for Mephitic Cloud. Seriously, that winds up being my main spell against anything that isn't undead/poison-resistant.

Conjure Flames is great as a defensive spell, too. I like to screw around by casting Conjure Flames on either side of a monster in a narrow passage, then either crush him with other spells, or confuse him with Mephitic Cloud and watch him wander into a raging fire.

Its because a wizard gets 5 starting mana instead of the 3 with summoner so early game its easier to swarm with spammals and makes it so that death from jackals and other groups is harder. Yes you may only have the spammels and the canines but early game both of those are about all you need and the canine summon spell actually works better then imps because red imps blink and thus they might decide to not be between you and the thing that wants to kill you. the starting book for a summoner is

Edit: also I don't learn any other spell beside the summoning ones. This is because mephitic cloud has 3 skills to it and none of them are summoning so that will really spread you out. Its better to specialize early on and at ~ level 8 summoning skill spammals summons 2 creatures and the canine almost never summons hostile at that point.
