Pretty sure Heroism does, because I've seen it increase magic skills. Or at the very least, that was recently removed/added.

I did actually test this myself, instead of looking at the wiki. It doesn't. At least not in 0.17.

Makhleb mage test is doing well so far[Halfway through Lair, no problems to date], as a DrFe. Absurdly good luck with books[Dragon, Death and TWO books of Annihilation] and a really nice randart spear probably also help, but the heal on kills means I can do stuff like fireball myself[I have rF+++] to kill the things attacking me.

EDIT: And the good book drops intensify. This is becoming vaguely silly.

Oka reliably gives piles of branded ammunition, his other gifts are hit or miss.  At ****** piety with an amulet of faith you'll eventually get SOMETHING you like, but its not a strategy to lean on.

Very hit or miss... I cleared Zot on a character once and didn't get a single piece of equipment that was an upgrade over what I picked up off the floor. And the ammo wasn't even useful, since I was running pure melee. (And my armor was godawful suck. Even mundane fire dragon armor would've been an upgrade...)

Shoulda just ran Ash for clarity, whoever for torment resistance in the crypt, or even Jivya to rearrange my mutations...

I've seen him give pretty high +x to gear.  Very occasionally...  But yeah, I agree.  You come for the ammo or the other features, the equipment is a bonus.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

I like taking him on fighters until after the vault since I usually get at least one endgame quality piece of equipment by then, then start swapping situationally. I want to give a serious Jiyva run a shot, but by the time its altar shows up, I usually don't want to waste a moderately successful to play around.

Corollary: Gargoyle Earth ele, get an artifact robe on the 4nd floor. Woo~~--- +0, rPois. Thank you, RNG...

On the 4th floor of a recent run, I got the best ring possible for casters: +9 magic, +6 int, -Cast... wait a second...

Bonus points for being on character who literally only cared about int to prevent stat zero.

Same run, pulled another artifact robe... with +str, rElec, *Corrode, and some other junk. And that artifact golden dragon armor, that I'd've killed for on a fighter gargoyle, troll, or minotaur, but noooooo, it's on a caster.

Insult to injury, earth ele died moments later, and my next mummy necro pulls an earth staff on the 2nd floor. I swear, this RNG is actually a sadistic AI.

But I think the absolute worst amulet I saw was from somebody in the DCSS IRC channel a few weeks ago, showing off his artifact amulet of inaccuracy. XD

I was considering playing a human character, but i remembered how much of a completely uninteresting game i had in the past with such a character.

So i looked around at trying to find a reason why i would even go through that again, instead of using the much more fun other species i've played with and found in the manual
Quote
Humans
Humans tend to be hardworking and industrious, and learn new things
quickly. The Human species is the most versatile of all the species
available to players. Humans advance quickly in levels and have equal
  abilities in most skills.
While the abilities being all at 0 aren't doing much for me, as i like my specialised guys that has +something on them, the levelup sounds good.
So they level up faster, but then the question, is how much faster ? Is it actually noticable enough to be mentionned or is it some crappy +0.01% thing ?

Racial experience gain works like aptitudes IIRC, and the scale for aptitudes are:

-5 = 238, -4 = 200, -3 = 168, -2 = 141, -1 = 119, 0 = 100, 1 = 84, 2 = 71, 3 = 59, 4 = 50, 5 = 42

Humans have +1 in experience gain, so they only need 84% as much XP as a 0 aptitude race. Kobolds, Halflings, and Formicids also level up as fast as humans.

Thanks, that's much better than i thought.
But disapointing to see that other, more interesting and fun, species get the same levelup advantage as humans, basically no more reason to me to roll a Human.

The problem with humans is that flat +0 skills are NOT average.  People who play characters with +2-4 in their main skills still struggle to reach lair.  In fact I would call humans a trap for new players who expect them to provide a "simple" experience.  Their main power is being able to hybridize, or switch strategies based on the items and challenges they encounter.  Not exactly easy to do and survive in the process.

I was led to believe that the altar of Jiyva should be guaranteed at the last floor of the slime pits. Well, here I am, and no altar in sight. Magic mapping reveals nothing. I heard Jiyva is a good end game god and Trog's abilities are starting to barely get me through fights alive.

I haven't ever got far enough in the game to do it myself, but I hear if you kill the Slime Pits' boss without worshiping Jiyva, you commit deicide as it loses its only worshiper and disappears in a puff of logic.

What's your build?

Makleb, Shining One and Vehumet are all practical choices as their regen (mana regen in Vehumet's case) can keep you up and running against hordes of enemies.  Zin offers solid panic buttons and you should be able to get a lot of piety fast with gold donations.  There are probably other choices depending on your build (hard to beat Dithmenos for a stealth focused character).
