Picked this up again yesterday and had a blast for an hour, but it left me wondering if IVAN is still a thing? I used to have crazy fun with that a while ago...
Not really. IVAN is long since dead, and the only fork of it I know of, CLIVAN, has died out too. CLIVAN still runs, but the community's gone and development has long since halted.

IVAN is dead. The most detailed fork is IVANX. Its a complete game that you can finish. Its not absolutely huge, but lots of fun.

I'm beginning to suspect that the listed spell fail rate is not entirely accurate or is not the only factor in determining spell success. I very often fail spells at 5% chance or less even when not wearing any encumbrance or under any effects, mutations or other irregularities of any kind.

Does crawl hate me or is there more to how spells fail other than being under a status effect?

Barring external circumstances (eg. Sif Muna's penance), the fail rate listed should be the fail rate you get.
I assume you are just noticing your failures more than your successes.

Also, Failure rate depends on Contamination (but is always listed as the current failure rate).
You gain (bad aspect) Contamination when failing a spell, and while invisible (and maybe one or two other things). So if you fail casting a spell, check again your chances before trying to cast it again ;)

Wait, seems like it doesn't increase failure rate anymore. My bad, didn't really play a spellcaster for some time :/
And I can't find any information to confirm that it had this effect before...

Anyway, nowadays, I'm playing Demonspawns of Xom.
Random all the way (and Xom get amused easily by the DS mutations :p ). It's quickly nice, and the aptitudes (between -1 and +1 everywhere) means I can use what Xom gives :)
Well, nice except now : he dropped me into the Abyss :/

No, I handle for now, but half the monsters are displayed in Red in the monster list. Good thing I've got the Demon Guardian mutation at lvl2, to help me handle things a bit, even though they're weaker than my enemies...
I was just beginning to explore then Lair .... :/

Contamination increases failure rate? I never knew that! Still learning new things about this game after all these years.

Haven't played much lately, though. I had a roundrobin FoAK going with a guy but I stopped hearing from him after we'd killed Mara and TRJ, which was a shame. Our tactics were pretty much 'bash things in the face, hope all goes well', but it was working out okay. I think our little ant-man had the legs to win.

My first time playing Formicid, as well. And man, if people dislike Chei (not me, I love Chei), they must really hate Formicids.
I once thought that contamination increased failure rate.

Then I realized that I was trying to apport the Orb of Zot with 6 intelligence and the deterioration mutation :P

BTW I won a three rune.  It was the same game as before, the one that did the suicidal Vault:5 run and got away with it.  I probably could have grabbed some more runes (I had like 60 permafood and more consumables than I could carry) but I wanted that win so bad.  First big RL win ever.

You misspelled seance.  Are possessing Draignean?  Are you actually a ghost in the shell? You have to tell us if you are, that's the rule

Which should I wear, +2 boots of running or +2 artefact boots that give +2dex +2str? HeHu of Okawaru. Running is nice for kiting, but so is getting a small bonus to EV, and I have Blink and I can buy a ring of teleport control.

Wear the boots of running.  It's nice for more than kiting, it's also nice for being able to easily escape enemies, meaning staying alive.
Being able to move faster than most enemies also means it's much easier to control how many enemies are in your LOS, meaning, how many enemies can hurt you.

+2 dex and +2 str would probably give you 0-1 EV, depending on how heavy the armor you're wearing is, and how much STR and DEX you already have.   So they're better than plain boots, but nowhere near as good as the boots of running.

I'd still go for boots of running. It won't do anything to negate your extra escape options, and its a pretty amazing ability that will always be helping you at least a little.

str+2 dex+2 is... ok.  I've gotten better stat boosts than that from rings on the first three floors.  You can get those stat boosts by leveling up, you can't getting an innate speed boost by leveling up.

Still get that ring of cTele and a bit of evocations though, that's a powerful combo.

LOL, just wrecked Nessos in a bow duel without even using any spells or god abilities.

*edit* And then got wrecked by a pack of aquamancers I teleported into while running from another pack of aquamancers.

Well this is surreal - finally got my 10th Crawl win, and it was right after my 9th... I dont suppose my recent games list will ever look this good again, so here it is for posterity :)

My MfSk morgue is here. Spectral Weapon is utterly ridiculous.
My HuIE morgue is here.

I almost feel like I am beginning to get the hang of 3-rune crawl. Time perhaps, to revisit Pan and Hell. But not the Abyss. Screw the Abyss.
