What do you think about my skills?  Most skill based buffs have gotten pretty incremental so its hard to tell what works at this point.

Edit (sorry for hyperactive posting): I have the silver rune of zot.  And... I'm alive.  Somehow.  I was not ready for that floor.  What a crazy fucking place.  I think that's enough Crawl for today.

Congrats! Your defenses are okay. I would upgrade to fire dragon armor for better AC and rF.

As for skills, raise shields to 10 and armor to 15. I'd probably raise fighting and throwing to 20, but I prefer ranged over melee. A troll with maxed unarmed is very fun though.

So I'm addicted to this game. I'd tried it before briefly, but the bad pixel art drove me away. (I wish they'd use DawnLike instead.)

On a whim, I gave it another shot in ASCII, and I'm very glad I did. I have four assignments due in the next five days, and I can't stop playing. Damn you, DCSS! I honestly think that this is the most well designed roguelike I've played. I particularly enjoy reading through the devlogs and seeing cruft being removed, not just having new features shoehorned in.

If only OpenBSD's version wasn't stuck on 0.11. I had great fun with Sludge Elves and Evaporate for a few runs before I realized that I was stuck in 2011 and started SSHing to FreeBSD to play it.

Last night I was playing a demonspawn wanderer (well, I played several, but this is the only one who survived past the first floor). She was a born tank, starting with lots of skill in armor, despite the shitty demonspawn aptitudes, +2 scale mail, and two potions of lignification. She also had no weapons skills whatsoever. I invested my skill points heavily in armor for the whole game, even after I had chosen axes as my dedicated weapons skill. Also, my first mutation (and the only one I got that I can remember now) was powered by death, which I just love. Mostly because I like the pretty pink color, which I'm told is called fuchsia. But anyways, I worshiped Yred for the first time and discovered the wonders of obscene amounts of zombie meatshields. Or boneshields, in the case of the skeletons. I've played necromancers before, but goddamn that was an absurd amount of cover. I was able to clear the lair (not the branches yet) with relative ease using my zombie friends and my amulet of rage, finally reaching maximum piety and eagerly awaiting some bro-fane servitors, and finding a +10 pants-creaming plate armor of the Devil's Advocate near the end of the lair. When I had just about cleared all of the hydras on the lair's final floor and had amassed a huge horde of zombies around me, I decided to stop and read-ID some scrolls I had. That was a terrible mistake. The first one was immolation, which I didn't really pay any mind to and kept reading. The next was holy word. My whole legion of the undead exploded around me, taking me with them, filling the screen with fireball burst effects and clouds of fire. On the highscores list the kill was attributed to a zombie wolf.

That's the most hilarious death.  You need that rF++ to use immolation.

Also I haven't gone back to my 3 rune game.  I'm not playing more until I've gotten sleep, and lately I haven't been getting sleep.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

And god damn, does it appear I missed a ton of stuff. Despite the, honestly, indecent equipment I got, most of it quite early in the game, this was one of the most difficult wins I've had. I suspect it's mostly due to skipping spells entirely, but I've 15-runed a NaGl with a mace and shield and no spells, and it was heaven in comparison to this guy.

Assorted thoughts to follow:

1. The Alchemist's Hat is insane - {rElec rPois rF+ rC+ rN+ MR+ rMut rCorr}. I bought it from a Gozag Shop Vault for like 5k, and didn't regret a single coin of it

2. There are a lot of new enemies, especially in Tomb. This is a good thing - however the devs might want to throw one or two new enemies at mid-game, since it remains somewhat meh.

3. Extended's difficulty seems to have been buffed again:

- I nearly died (sub-20 HP) three times to Mnoleg of all things. I guess removing his tentacles for new branded melee attacks was not, in fact, a nerf, since I had to use almost all my consumables to not die

- I got a Holy Pan level with TSO, starting in view of 3 Daevas which basically wrecked my shit. I used up all my consumables here, barely survived until the teleport kicked in and scurried away like a disgraced rat

- I got Smited and Hellfired a lot. I mean A LOT. Not sure if it's objective or confirmation bias, but things were using their abilities a lot more. Reading through the change notes they do say a rework on monster spellcasting and ability use went in, but I haven't searched around to see what exactly this entails.

- A LOT OF GOD DAMN HELLFIRE.

- Shard Shrikes can go shrike themselves.

This reminds me I have a hybrid Naga caster of some sort sitting at 11 runes in one of the fifty trunk folders on my desktop. I might finish it soon.

I haven't gone back to my 3 rune game.  I'm not playing more until I've gotten sleep, and lately I haven't been getting sleep.
Finally came back to this.  Had a month, never really felt like I had both the time and mental to come back to DCSS.  I REALLY don't want this game to die, never won a big traditional RL before.

Clearing out most of the easy(ish) branches I should have done before Vaults:5.  Found the Trove in Depths:3... it asked me for 13 potions of cure health.  Even if I had a single one of those remaining, no way whatever is in there is worth such a huge sacrifice.  Not for an unarmed troll fighter who doesn't use half of her equipment slots.

In Depths:4 I found something interesting.  As far as I can tell, its the wizard prison of Azkaban.  A medium sized network of hallways with 2x2 cells, each blocked off by two iron bars.  In each cell is a powerful wizard, including an Ancient Lich and some powerful draconians.  A silent spectre in the center keeps them all from spellcasting, while soul eaters roam the halls, drawing from the life force of the wizards when they get into fights.

Pretty cool find.  I'm currently disintegrating the bars with a wand and getting some easy experience.

God dammit. Just lost my best character ever because when I used a wand of teleport on Spider: 5, it decided to put me right in the middle of the rune room. I would've used Ru's apocalypse to take everything in the room out, but unfortunately, they managed to fatally poison me and give me -Potion (I took sacrifice drink) before it was even my turn.

Its probably best to give those up on a spellcaster character.  Melee bruisers (except berserkers) want every bit of item based magic they can get.

In my own run, tried out a Ziggurat.  Told myself I'd leave at ten or whenever a floor gave me serious trouble, I'm not trying to be ambitious and my resistances are a bit shit.  The only way I can get up to even rN++ is by wearing a plain ring of negative resistance, I've got no way to get rN+++.  I've found two non-potion sources of rElec the entire game, a quarterstaff and a vampiric sword, neither of which I know how to fight with.  Went with the sword because its one handed.  So... yeah, not the best.

It was a lot of fun, I liked the gambling nature of it and apparently so did Nemelex Xobeh, as he gave me a deck every single floor I descended.  At one point he gave me a deck and then another deck two turns later.  Most of the loot was bad randart rings and items my character couldn't use, but there were a few gems.  A disk of storms, a manual of throwing, a +5 str +3 dex cloak, and multiple fans of gales.

The first floor was startling, with 3 mummies who started the fight by double tormenting me.  The rest of it was decently smooth, I started invoking invisibility every floor I descended and drawing out that floor's free deck one card at a time to start each fight.  I did get severely wounded by a single thrashing horror because I forgot I was wielding a rod, and later I met an entire floor of mummies and dealt with it by gratuitous evocation summoning.

The real kicker was that floor 9, one before I would quit, was holy themed.  This included some enemies most crawl players have probably never seen before, like an opham and two cherubs, and worst of all three each of daeva and normal angels.  The Opham ringed me in holy fire, to which I responded to by throwing a dozen rocks, invoking my disk (only to discover they're electricity resistant, grrr) and dealing four from multiple decks of war.  The grand total casualties of that was, ah, 0 angels and a shitton of summoned hogs.  Fortunately they weren't great at killing me either so I blinked toward the exit... only to get bounced around as one the cherubs had bolts of dispersion.  In the end I dropped some elementals for cover and ran out the portal, not even bothering to grab the fan of gales that was in the loot pile for fear of getting forceably blinked again or smited multiple times in one turn.  So yeah, it was a good time.

Picked this up again yesterday and had a blast for an hour, but it left me wondering if IVAN is still a thing? I used to have crazy fun with that a while ago...
