OK, I need some advice for getting my HeAm off the ground. There's just so many things I need to train, and I'm not sure what to prioritize. Obviously I need bows, and not training them would be a waste of a good aptitude. But I also need long blades, because bow seems a bit lacklustre point-blank (is there actually a penalty here, because it sure feels like it), and ammo can be a problem if I use bow for everything. But then I also have to train hexes, because the spells are really useful but need high spell power to be  reliable. And then there's of course dodging, because I'm squishy and adder poison kills like half of my characters. Obviously I can't train all of these at the same time, because I'll just wind up mediocre at everything. But leaving any one out leaves me vulnerable. So I've concluded that I need to train these things one after another, but I'm having a hard time figuring out the schedule. Can someone with experience with this background recommend me a "build", ie what to train when.

That depends on where you are. Assuming you're early in the game and just found a longsword laying around:

Turn on Long Blades to ~10 + Dodging to ~10 + Spellcasting and Hexes ~3 for Slow; then

Turn off dodging/long blades, Spellcasting to ~5 + Hexes to ~7 for Cause Fear;

Turn on Bows, turn on Fighting to ~6.

After this I think it's way too blurry, it depends on if you've found enough arrows, any books, another long blade or a bow, etc.

Anyway, today I learned a hard lesson. I was cruising through the game with CeGl (which btw is RIDICULOUSLY easy, I never once felt threatened) and came across Jogrun in Swamp. No biggie, he's at max distance, I have good gear, lots of resists and full HP, and 23 Bows with a nicely enchanted Longbow. Pretty much just passing the time until Zot.

Suddenly:

RIP. Always pay attention to status effects, kids. Shatter hurts.

Enslave + inner fire is a lot of fun, until you enslave multiple enemies and one of them gets killed in the explosion, which really pisses off Okawaru. What other god would be a good choice for HeAm?

I finally beat all the Sprint maps.  :) Fedhas' Mad Dash is a fun map. Half of the enemies can't see invisible and the other half can. A ring of invisibility is available very early on, so I guess they want you to play stealthy. My SpAs had an easy time. Curare needles instant-killed the sleeping spriggans. And invisibility trivializes the oklobs. I used Trog's summons for the few enemies that needles and stealth didn't work on.

Nice !
Those sprint constantly kills my character, some faster than other (i always wondered if those sprint map are really doable with every class/race combo)

I looked at the time/turns to win between my 0.15 deep elf wizard and my 0.15 minotaur fighter
Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I was curious too about the food consumption difference
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
that said, since my minotaur win i lost near to 10 characters, only 1 reached the lair.
Didn't really annoyed me as none of those 10 found any kind of decent loot anyways, unlike my 2 winners that got early enough to keep them alive for the whole game

I think its less a deep elf thing and more a caster thing. Literally every time I see a caster in-progress, they always have ridiculous gametime in comparison to a melee or ranged character. Berserkers are usually winning by the time casters get their first or second rune. I think a lot of it has to do with MP management, like you said, and they do have more on their plate in terms of progression and ability management.

Its the number 1 reason I dont ever play them. It just takes too much time, I get bored.

That's a very interesting comparison in game time. I've always felt that the slower, more tactical caster play is how crawl is 'meant' to be played, with berserkers being a sort 'hack and slash' mode.

In case you didn't know, there are various tweaks you can do in the settings file to make auto-explore instant (you just teleport to the next 'interesting' thing) and make resting take no time. This combined with a good auto-pickup list does speed the game up considerably, but does take a bit of getting used too. It's worth playing around with to find the right settings for you - let me know if you need a hand setting it up.

Casters are much slower, but imo also more interesting since you get a bunch of flashy spells.

Welp, that's it.

I can finally stop pretending to be a semi-decent Crawl player.

I starved to death. In Snake:4 after grabbing the rune.

Because I was in the situation in which 1 shatter brings me to starving, and I didn't have time to eat, I alternated Shattering and eating Fruits. I grabbed the rune, ran 3 steps and whoops HERE'S A LIST OF YOUR SHIT, ASSHOLE.

I am SO done with this.

My new handle ended up similar to the old one.

I thought I was going to ruin my decent win rate after not playing for a year, but it looks like the new account was unnecessary. I only need 2 more online wins to equal my offline wins.

Spoiler: The Pits Redux (click to show/hide)

I love needle stabbing! It requires max throwing skill to reach maximum effectiveness though. The map took longer than usual, because I screwed up in the final vault and awoke everything. Fighting Mennas, The Royal Jelly, Mnoleg, and the Zot denizens at once was fun.

I used a vulnerability scroll to ensure that my paralysis needle worked on the royal jelly. It probably wasn't necessary. Jellies eat your needles, so I killed them the old fashioned way. I killed everything, except Mnoleg, who was lured to an empty part of the level and ditched.

Curare needles can apparently one-shot anything that's not resistant to poison, including orb guardians and draconians, if they're sleeping. Frenzy needles are great against low MR melee enemies in crowded areas. Sleeping needles are similar to paralysis needles, except much rarer. I used confusion needles along with slowing needles to prevent enemies from wandering too far. I haven't tested if vulnerability scrolls allow needles to work on magic-immune enemies. That would be nice.

On a random note, here are the lessons I have learned from the last few games (as gargoyle fighters):
Amulets of faith are awesome on Okawaru. You get way more gifts, and can use your powers fairly frequently without ever going below max stars. Eventually you will want to swap it for a randart, but getting more gifts has a huge impact.

I need to be less overconfident, those deep troll earth mages are nasty, especially when backed up by a dozen other deep trolls and half a dozen hill giants.

Okawaru's abandonment is nasty, don't abandon him. Even if you think you can handle it, its a huge pain in the butt, and even then it can kill you. It really isn't worth it for anything less then a 15 runer. AKA, be less overconfident.

Qazlal is cool, he clouds everywhere, and all the enemies just rush up to you so you can murder them in the face. That shield buff is pretty neat too.

Just because Sonja is a skeleton doesn't mean she can't still banish you with her dagger of disruption.

If you are with Qazlal, and you get banished, abandon him instantly. His penance *might* kill you, but the massive noise from your clouds in the abyss certainly will (unless you are already like level 27 or something).
