As much as I like Trog, by the time I finish Lair he loses a lot of his usefulness. Pretty much becomes the god of BIA spam. Berserk is great for dealing with otherwise certain-death early threats, but later on you have more than enough options, and Berserk is rarely the safest one. Its very rare for me to use it later on. And, of course, you are almost guaranteed to get an amazing weapon by the time you've cleared Orc.

If I was a lot better of a player, I'd probably avoid him in favor of something like Okawaru with the easymode classes (like Gr/Mi/HO), since you are likely not going to need Berserk to get into the midgame. Heroism and Finesse are amazing throughout the entire game and are almost always one of the best options for a given situation. Fortunately I'm not very good at staying alive so having berserk immediately is infinitely more useful than having heroism/finesse later.

Don't underestimate the usefulness of Trog's Hand; it gives a very significant increase in MR which can prevent you getting paralysed, banished etc. It's particularly good for many of the species that are recommended as berserkers, which have innately mediocre MR.

Also in favor of Trog :
If you find a scroll of acquirement, ask for staff/rod and you'll automatically get a Rod. Once you can put 1à-15 levels in evocations, those become great. Nearly as powerful at lvl5 spells, and you can put even more XP in those later one, to make them even more powerful :)
(and they have infinite charges, as they recharge over time)

I second a MiBe of Trog. The only thing to watch out for is Berserk running out mid fight, which can often happen to newer players due to them not knowing how long it'll take to take down each individual enemy.
My suggestion is to only berserk in corridors, and to use something else if it doesn't look as though you'll easily be able to make it through them.

Trogs hand is good, and BiA will take you all the way to Zot. As others have said, a ranged option is 100% needed, and rods are probably your best bet.

Throwing works pretty well too, once you finish Lair.

Minotaur Berserker is the most straight-forward, but Gargoyle Berserker is, according to many people, easier.

I hate when I'm stuck with my starting weapon literally all game. Clearing out Hydras with a mace is such a chore. Ended up getting pecked away from full HP by a lone Griffon at the bottom of Lair because of bad acc roles and how horribly slow a +4 mace kills things.

Been trying HeAm lately, and I was wondering if I should go for Enslavement or Cause Fear.

Both have their uses. Cause Fear is a great as a way to thin groups and as a decent escape spell. As a downside, it's not always reliable (sometimes the only thing you want to run away doesn't) so it should be used *before* it's a dire situation. Enslavement is great as a more offensive spell.

It really depends on your needs and where you are.

I think I just accidentally beat Mennas to death with a Rod over the course if a few hundred turns.

Woops :x

edit: and died with the orb again - this has to be my third death with or right next to the orb in the last month or so. Purple Drac happened to spawn and breathed away my teleport every time I tried. When I finally got away I was teleported into a room full of orb guardians and moths of wrath.

Not a fan of DDBe at all, I cant see a reason to pull one unless you just want a DD win. Both Be and DD skyrocket your earlygame survivability, so having both is kind of redundant. Later on DD becomes a HUGE pain in the ass - you'll burn through piety, pots, and MP (granted the MP is useless) and have to constantly stop to rejuvenate. Meanwhile DD itself offers little - you get some HP and MR. Yay. If you want to tap into what makes DD any good, run a caster, not a berserker.

Sorry for the doublepost, but I have a request - can I get some morgues? I like to see ghosts and the leaderboards, would putting other players' morgue files in my folder give me that?

To your Zot problem (any probably stating the obvious):
It's usually a good idea to clear the whole level, unless you are playing a character that has to rely on ninjaing the Orb.
Also there are usually teleport traps on either side of the main chamber that give you an instant teleport.

Yeah I noticed the tele a bit too late.

Always, always clear the Zot 5! I never used too, and even on strong characters it takes some stair dancing/grinding away, but it's always so much safer. After you get the Orb getting out is rarely a challenge, so it's worth putting everything into that last push.

DDNe are the way to go if you want a DD win. I've got quite a few wins with that combo through a combination of Haunt+Necromut. Haunt did get nerfed quite recently I believe though, so it might not be as good as it was.
