I've been having fun playing this lately.  I'm so bad at it though, never even seen a rune.

I did get lucky on my current game and had a god gift of +12 Crystal Plate Armour so hopefully I get at least one rune this time.   :P

Does anyone know where I can get some decent short blades? I've been trying to take on hell as a vine stalker monk and I've discovered that it is harder than Satan's mantits to hack through everyone using only a cutlass and Nemelex Xobeh's wonderful powers.

Hall of blades could have a quickblade. So could Elf:3. You could trawl the abyss and/or pan, but it'd be quicker and less painful to just punch yourself in the balls a bunch.

So I finally got a decent HOAK that didn't find the exact randart weapon on D:3 that my previous AK would need - go Long Blades? Have a randart +8 trident on D:2. Go Tridents? Have Erica and the consumables to kill her on D:10. Hurrr.

I've got a total of +11 slaying [gauntlets of War and a ring], and a Holy Bastard Sword - both from the same place, an Ice Statue vault in Lair - had to blink in, grab them in a hurry and go down the escape hatch, was kind of harrowing.

I'm currently debating on whether I should just say screw it and go sword-and-board, or try out for a two-hander.

Shields is probably my best bet, honestly. I've got an extended-worthy weapon in my hands right now. Oh man, choices.

0.14's Labyrinths are actually pretty challenging. There's actually enemies besides the minotaur now, including hungry ghosts and wandering mushrooms. There's also various vaults that provide some refreshing change to the typical layout of countless corridors, and there's stuff to help you out such as a wand of digging with one charge in it, or a gateway to the Abyss to "provide an escape through the horrors of the abyss".

I wasn't expecting the changes and figured it was a chance for free treasure like in past versions. Probably good that they changed it, then.

It still is free loot, only not as boring as before. Unseen horrors can be nasty, though! Also the shrooms are a surprisingly tough fight without Clarity.

Also I got tired of splatting HOAKs in Depths, so I rolled a Gargoyle. Just bought a +15 Plate Armour of the Lily [rF+, rC+, MR++, Dex+2, Int+2] from a shop. Not bad for an armour named after my mother :D

I've 11 scrolls of enchant armour, a Crystal Plate and a Gold Dragon Hide.

I'm debating the merrits of going for CPA, GDA or remaining with my current plate armour. Going CPA will definitely give me more total AC, but that's pretty useless apart from going for the highest possible I can [I have two rings of protection and a weapon of protection somewhere, but that would be cheating, since I wouldn't actually be playing like this, only using it to ascend for the stats]. GDA seems a bit useless, my armour already has rF+ and rC+, and +15 enchantment, a GDA goes only to +12.

Seems like the best option is to keep my current kit, hit spellcasting even harder, swap some rings around to make room for the slaying and go on my merry way, with a short burst of TSO to bless my Eveningstar.

Wonder if it's better to remove the ring of vitality and keep my randart Wizardry... probably not. I'm not really casting anything, and I think I can get haste castable in plate without too much issues. I like the +15 hp and the regen on the vitality ring, and I have sInv on a randart amulet of rage.

I also really need randart boots, cloak and helm since assholes keep corroding them and bringing my total defense down  >:(

I would keep the ?EA for auxiliary armor, yeah. by the way, why don't you enchant that shield once more ?
It is dwarven, but it still has a chance of getting corroded :D

You could identify your rod, and see if it's worth investing in evocation, as spellcasting in plate will take a long time to get online, too.
But yeah, with your skills, either you go for a 3-runes win and you don't have much XP left, so putting all in evocation (and maye armor) will give you the best you can get, or you can try extended (considering the -20% HP of the gargoyles and the fact that you're focused on melee... :s ), and try something else.

At 11 wins, I officially have more 15-rune ones than non-15-rune ones.

Nothing much to say, really. Gargoyles are babby's first 15-rune win, but I love them. Besides there's a certain limit on how many HoAKs a man can splatter in Depths before he starts thirsting for blood.

And for the record, I did actually make the orb run in the crystal plate mail. I only had 80 AC in the plate, and decided that was definitely not gargoyle-ly enough.

This is the furthers I've gotten on an Ogre, and I'm starting to regret. Among the things I regret most is my choice of god. Trog did gift me the sweet club I'm using, but I found a Pearl dragon hide really early on, and a ton of Enchant Armour scrolls. It's been +10 since mid-lair, and I pumped a bit of int thinking I could go for some spell casting.

However God wrath is now tied to exp gained, so I can't even cheese it out behind a rat or something. And surviving Trog wrath on a PDA ogre doesn't seem like the likeliest of possibilities.

I could just get 4 runes and write it off, which would probably be the soundest path. However it just feels like a waste, really. I got a PDA, I can get spellcasting easy... I just need to survive the big angry ape's wrath. Barring rat-and-hallway stuff, what's the next best survival method?

Also I've maxxed Fighting, and am now training Armour, but I'm uncertain. Would going for evocations and gathering all the fans of gales and stuff be reasonable? What does an Ogre even train? Most of my OgHus tend to die off around Vaults.

Spellcasting Ogre is always nice to play because you can pump a lot of XP in the spellcasting skill and less than usual in the magic schools. Evocation always helps, but I think you already knows that the new evocables don't need XP to get their base effect, so you don't really need to put XP in it for those.
However, if you can get a scroll of acquirement, you should ask for a staff/rod before leaving Trog, and benefit from the 100% chance of getting a rod, in case you get a really nice one (as this would be a nice chance of situation for your character, and staying with trog could be better then).

My ogres who stayed alive long really benefited from the Heavy htting in melee (GSC) and ranged (Large rock with their native penetration), and spells more for utility than anything else (usually weaing FDA/IDA, but with your armor & str, PDA is nice too).

By the way, Trog's wrath is really survivable, now but you should get in an area where you can get XP and don't really risk much. And yeah, those are rare, if they even exist. You got the 2 first levels of Elf there, for a part of this. One of mine survived Oka's wrath (and I think they are more comparable, now that they're XP indexed), at level 25 but with only 225 HP. You could try to get a few books and see what are the failure rates of the escape spells, and prepare to put all your XP on those as soon as you quit Trog, but you're more experienced about this than me, I think.

Ogres are bad.

Game ran out of food. What I have on me is literally the last permafood left in the game, barring some strawberries and Pan/Abyss. Cocytus:7 was a sea of deep water, I had no flight, no consumables, panicked, started randomly teleported, Fiends finished me off.

Horrible Ogre defenses meant I spent a ton of consumables each fight and Torment wrecked me - large health pool only meant a ton of time sitting around trying to rest some of the damage up, before fiends came and bolted my fat ass. All enemies were capable of hurting me - perhaps I shouldve gone GDA for the higher defenses, but I thought a hybrid would be easier in the lighter armour.

Did a ton of damage with a holy GSC and Spectral Weapon, but it didn't really matter - hells are about attrition, and ogres are apparently really bad at attrition. Should've bailed with 13 runes. Not sure why I didn't.

Total enjoyment of run : 5-10%.

What's your enjoyment on pre-extended game for that run?

My OgBe 4-runer was fun as hell (maybe because I didn't go there?). So strong, so squishy, so crafty. Was a fun run.

Your 8 dodging was nearly useless in Pearl Dragon armor, that's why you have so low defences, I think. Also, you didn't find more protection spell (other than repel) ?

39AC/10EV isn't really low defenses, and GDA would have murdered your spells anyway.  Then again maybe your strength would have helped.

@Graven Even if the character was lost, i must congratulate you on getting 13 runes.
It's been a long time i didn't ran any Ogre in Crawl, but my old attempts always ended into disaster much before the point you reached.
