Tompliss is referring to Heroism. As an Oka worshiper, you can use that to temporarily increase all of your non-magic skills by 5, up to a maximum of 27. The ranks in Armour beyond 22 only matter when you aren't using Heroism, which you pretty much should always be using in Zot.

So, in other news: Polearms + Spriggans is a really hilarious combination. Kite literally everything without worrying about mana.

About fighting them one on one - The first floor had basically no one tile wide corridors, so... how was that supposed to happen? There was one, way at the right and frankly at that point I think it would've been better to stair dance. Are Zot floors pre generated? So ilike, next time I go there will it still be a big semicircle sort've setup?

all those Zot levels are hell due to their open design and lack of narrow corridors for crowd control, a few versions back it wasn't like this, but i guess this had to happen in the "let's make it even harder" thing.

I think something that should help is to bring all your wands of digging, they're basically the only way to obtain corridors so you can avoid all those draconians squads to overwhelm you.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You can tolerate rotten meat.
You have supernaturally acute eyesight.
You are agile. (Dex +2)
You tend to lose your temper in combat.
Your flesh is cold resistant.
You are dopey. (Int -2)
You digest meat inefficiently.
You have a fast metabolism.
You are frail (-10% HP).
You are somewhat resistant to further mutation.
You occasionally shout uncontrollably.
You are weak. (Str -2)

Was gonna be a completely new race/class/god win, too. All good until 3 runes, get mutated a bit in Abyss and Slime, get mutated to hell and back in Zot, run in the abyss to hide, go out WELP YOU BLUNDERED IN A ZOT TRAP HAVE THESE 50 SHADOW DRAGONS, a bit of tele roulette, run back to mommy Lucy again, huh, getting abyssed takes me to 1 hp, slug 2 potions oh jesus Bone Dragons and horrible stuff alas poor yorick.

Should've dumped Lugonu, gone to Zin to clear my zits and go finish zot, but there really wasn't a convenient time. My only shot was getting a Zin altar in the Abyss, as my entry point was so bad I would reliably need further rescuing anytime I exited the Abyss in zot.

Explorer's journal, February the second, 2014 :

Lugonu : decent-ish. Escaped a few times in the Abyss, left it a few times too, couldn't banish a single dude [probably shouldn't have tried it exclusively on Orbs of Fire]. Didn't brand my weapon since I bear strong dislike towards distortion.

Long Blades and shield : meh.

Armour and Dodging and Spellcasting - should've gone full armour for a non-extended run, take up some evocations for extended. Spread myself a bit too thin, and while it did work out, early game could've been a ton easier.

Orcs : hell yeah.

There were probably 10 different ways to survive this, but I was sort of sick of this character - things took too long to die despite my slaying, and I had a ton of mutations without a single Cure Mut. Had nice equip, though.

My biggest problem is early and mid-game I could barely kill and/or hit anything. A +5 ring of slaying, and I routinely missed stuff 5 turns in a row. My scale mail was occasionally preventing me from hitting stuff even at 15 armour skill. I don't understand armour nowadays ;_;

Also either I've become really, really bad at Crawl, or trunk is like, totally hard you guys.

This is the only attempt out of 20+ that went further than one rune, and I didn't even win. All the Lair branches keep getting worse and worse to the point that Swamp is currently my favourite one, I dislike the rune lock on Vaults since I often went V:1-4 before getting a rune, and Depths is way too densely packed with enemies to be a reasonable source of items pre-rune. I assume it makes things more fun for better players, but still, I'd like a little less limitations on where we can go. I don't find that a fun way to increase difficulty.

I do like Natasha, though. Not too difficult, not too stupid a gimmick. Nice bit of fluff, too, but god damn Boris stop leaving your stuff around the dungeon. That minotaur dude is nasty I hear. Only got him once, ran like hell since his tile looked scary and also he hit me like a truck with Major Destruction.

Well if no-one else is posting here...

"Oh no! It's Saint Roka! Whatever shall we do? Read a scroll of Immolation then gulp a potion of Lignification you say? How ingenious!"

Then of course I beat stupid Roka to death in 3 turns and took a total of nearly 100 damage from the flame cloud I was in and promptly died, while trying to mash all the consumables I had in my stupid wooden mouth.

It was such a great character, with +11 slaying and 30 ac and everything. Sigh. Every time I think "ooh, I'll just do a quick run to the temple or maybe Lair before I go to bed" I get great loot and then die an hour later, mad about the time I lost.

Well, grinder isn't exactly the easiest enemy :)
Sigmund and him have very high kill rates, as far as uniques go, because they're hard-hitting early ones.

As a spellcaster, it's not often good idea to go against him (he blinks at random but has a normal speed, so walking can get you away from him as long as you reach stairs), because you won't have really high HP and his Pain spell (and part of his normal attacks) ignore your other defences (so your protect dagger doesn't bring as much against him as against usual enemies).
Moreover, he is really ice resistant (you can check this by pressing 'x', putting the cursor on him, and pressing 'v' for a description), so your spell (and ice beast) damage was reduced by 80%...
He's the one you flee as an ice elementalist.

Do you ?
I think it's really good. but clearly, you need a good fire resist or ranged damage (summons incl.) to use it properly.
It does wonders in the entrance of the Orc Mines or the Vaults, and is always good in those bee-hive.

They're doing a DNS change, I think, it could take a coupe days. I don't know where you can download it elsewhere, but you can play it online (or watch & talk with others players):
https://crawl.s-z.org/#lobby  (server in the US, I think)
http://crawl.lantea.net:8080/#lobby  (server in Europe)

I'm playing a Troll Monk of Nemelex Xobeh. I'm very early in the game- XP level 8 on Dungeon Level 4. I've dumped all my skills into unarmed combat and evocations at this point, but I've just found a +13/+13 artifact scythe with draining. Is it worth switching my combat skills into polearms?

It is the Scythe of Curses, isn't it ?
This one is a Fixed Artifact with very special effects. One of them is that it will curse all your items one after the other (except if you worship Ashenzari). This, combined with the fact that Scythes are initially bad weapons (slow hitting and not that high damage) means that it isn't really worth it.
Especially with an unarmed Troll (because it means you have one of the best damage output in the game).
