Merfolks and Draconians probably make the best transmuters.  I guess Felid is ok, but the downside of that is that you'd have to play as a Felid.

The big new-ish stuff:
- Dithmengos, a stabby god in Trunk
- Vinestalkers, a regeneraty race in an experimental build

I'd dump the scale mail for some better armor. Since you're not using spells at the moment, and your dodging is meh anyway, you'd be better off with the guaranteed damage reduction plate gives you, and the extra AC wouldn't hurt either.  Less damage taken means more health means living longer. Otherwise your equipment seems decent for Lair.

Training fighting will give you some more health too, which should go well with your current tactic.

I always wondered if on the long term the gong shield is really viable due to it simply attracting every single monsters around with the noise it does in fight, i remember using it and go some nasty surprises.

Noticing the apparently nice weapon on Graven character, i was wondering how much its vampiric brand would help then, so i looked on the bot to check what kind of % of the damage was converted as health and found
Quote
On 3 of 5 hits that do non-zero damage against a non-rN target, you heal 1 + random2(damage) HP.
Unless i'm mistaking something, the vampiric brand will at max heal 3 health in 1 hit (3 times out of 5) regardless of the weapon damage ?
It seems so underwhelming

It depends on the amount of damage you deal in the hit vamp triggers. I got a vampiric battleaxe from Trog once, in some good swings it healed me for a lot of health. As in, 1/4 of my health bar instantly refilled. Went really well with berserking. Other times it seemed underwhelming, but most of the time it was useful, or at least better than nothing.

Could it be because your axe is cleaving (hitting many enemies at once), multiplying then the vamp gain by the amount of hits ?
If it's that, indeed it could be interesting, if you have an axe (no other weapon tyoe can cleave if i remember well ? ).

Nah, it heals "1 + random2(damage) HP", so it heals a random percent of the damage dealt to the target (and I think it doesn't use the cleave, butyou don't want to hit multiple enemies with more HP than rats anyway, because that means getting hit by them).

Pretty sure Cleaving applies on-hit effects, or at least used to, because as soon as I'd get a Vampiric Executioner Axe from Trog, I'd tab my way through the entire Vaults:5 ambush without a care in the world.

Also yeah I was mostly asking about the Shield of the Gong. Will be using it for a bit, but I plan on getting some stealth so I'd have to dump it.

Besides, with a Vampiric weapon I have no way of dealing with Hydrae, so I'd probably not want more than one at a time, preferebly at least two screens away from me.

edit : Oooookay then, this gong, or rather "GONNNNNG!!!!" thing has got to go. Nearly died three times, all out of escape consumables. Thankfully my version of orc:4 has double the shops, so hopefully I'll get at least something useful.

edit : Also, for the first time in my life, my MR status is "Almost entirely resistant to enemy enchantments". The MR items I have are:
- Hat of the Bear Spirit [MR+]
- Orcish Plate of Magic Resistance
- A randart Large Shield [MR++]
- MR mutation from a Beneficial mut potion
For the fun of it I also have a randart amulet [MR++] but I'm not using it.

First time ever clearing Lair. With 40 AC (thanks to a new plate mail), this character feels like an unstoppable tank. Should I go for orc or do a few more dungeon levels first?

Wow, nice AC, that plate and the ring look like they really help ! :D
You're playing version 0.13, so I would advice you to dlve a little deeper in the dungeon. but don't forget you can stop at any time to go in orc.
You should train Blades up to 18 (min-delay with your sword). If you don't have a really low failure rate on your invocations, you should train them a little more, too.
I say thise because you have 40AC, so putting all your XP in armor may nto be that useful for orc, and becasue you may need something else than pure melee, especially for Orc:4 ;)
You usually need a few HP for Orc (as that's the only way to resist smiting), but you already have 10+ fighting and +10% HP mutation...
Don't forget that the Orc uniques will realyl hurt you, though.

Playing again after the longest time, and finally back into the swing of things. Of course, getting a +5, +4 ring of slaying on the third level of the dungeon probably helped. :P

Thanks for the advice! Makh doesn't have too hard invokes, and I've already got his best one (summon greater demon) down to 8%, but if more Invoke helps with Major Destruction, it's worth training. Good to know about Orc:4.
