They do seem to be coming up with some strange races lately, probably just further infuriating the MD people.  I like Lava Orcs but that rC- can be brutal

It's in situation like this that you appreciate your choice of never ceasing to train Stealth since the beginning

I'll let him sleep and move carefully away, far away.
moving around the corner, standing beside an ogre - stealth wont save you.
you can as well not train it at all, and instead focussing on how to survive said ogre.

Actually stealth have saved my character in that situation, i was able to move him away without waking up that nasty unique (that at the current state of my character there is simply no way to come out alive from a fight, especially with Mennas aura of silence that would prevent me to use the only weapon i have against him : spells)

Without high stealth, Mennas would have woke up, not training stealth would be suicidal in that game when using character that are weak in health like the Deep Elves are

Got a fairly successful (by my standards) gargolye monk going. Now that he's at Level 14, is there any reason to not be flying all the time? Other than taking more damage from airstrike, are there any disadvantages?

Out of Airstrike there should be only advantages (better stealth, avoid traps, fly over deep water, magma..).

If you see Gastronok, i remember he liked to cast Airstrike so avoid him while flying, i don't know for other monsters that can use this spell.

You mentionned airstrike, and IIRC it's the only bad side of this. My gargoyles always had flight on when not fighting airstriking uniques (not that it helped them survive late-game...)
And it really help in some branches (shoals, abyss) and vaults...
[EDIT] oh, remember that this flight doesn't let you go at full speed when above (deep?) water/magna ;)

About the 4 "new" races...
Djinni, Gargoyles and Formicids all have this feeling of "tanky but not really tanky" with the bonus AC (and possible shield with 2 hands for formicids) but the -20% HP, or the simple HP bonus from mana...
Lava orc are pretty much the exception, but I don't like their feeling of "Hill Orc only better" :/

Yeah, Lava Orc felt a lot better than Hill Orc when I tried it.

The new Orc subrace makes me wonder if they'll add a new dwarf subrace. I never really liked that they took out the last one instead of making it special somehow.

YASD --  What a sad end to an epic character.  I had 3 runes, Abyss, Vault and Spider..  In fact I cleared them all so easily I thought Elf 3 would be a cakewalk..  and it was..  I killed 7 deep elf annihilators and all other elves until I got to the last 3 creatures..  2 deep elf Annihilators and  Master Elf Archer.  I made two mistakes.. 1) I should of kept my health higher and not been so aggressive  2)  I should of used my heal wounds staff instead of forgetting that my blink scroll would not work in this area.

Got nailed by that Crystal Spear spell + Archer shot.   Seriously, I think Elf 3 is more dangerous to this Character than Vault 5 and Abyss 5..  Here is my Morgue  http://crawl.akrasiac.org/rawdata/Skyspire/morgue-Skyspire-20131108-024052.txt

I feel sorry for whoever runs into my ghost.  He has boots of running now, too.  With an AC of 66 he is a quick moving and hard hitting tank.

Here are some of his more dangerous kills:

An ancient lich (WizLab)
  Saint Roka (Orc:4)
  Norris (Shoals:3)
  Mennas (Crypt:2)
  Jory (Crypt:2)
  A profane servitor (Abyss:5)
  3 bone dragons
  2 tentacled monstrosities (Vaults:5)
  2 deep elf blademasters (Elf:3)
A deep elf master archer (Elf:3)
  A kraken (Shoals:3)
  Agnes (Spider:2)
  4 shadow dragons
  Frances (Vaults:4)
  Kirke (D:18)
  Roxanne (Elf:2)
  8 tengu reavers
  A revenant (Crypt:2)

 I miss him.  :'(

@frostshotgg:
Leafsnail posted a short blurb about them a few posts back:
Quote
Formicids
20% less HP than average
Medium size
Can use both a 2 hander and a shield, or a giant club without a shield
Growing antennae
Digging ability
Self-shafting ability
Slight AC boost from chitin
Poison weakness
Permastasis

Seem pretty fragile and gimmicky. Who knows how they'll end up working.

@skyspire:
Ouch, sorry about the loss.

Now you know to fear the über elves, particularly when you're not fighting them 1v1. And you're right about that health thing. My survival rates have gone way up since I started thinking 70% health as "DANGER DANGER BAIL OUT NOW" situation.

I guess an Executioner's Axe + Large Shield would be pretty great... but then again you're 33% slower than you otherwise would be.  And you can't blink or teleport.

bug or feature  ?

Thanks, hopefully it means that it's then not possible to corrode/dissolve it

It won't, but magical staffs are actually pretty crappy weapons. If you have the appropriate elemental (and weapon) skill trained they can do decent damage, but they don't really scale (as you can never enchant them). That said, they are probably better then nothing for a pure caster.

Finally got pretty far with one of my conjurers, and got to the forest for the first time ever (on F2 currently). And damn, does it have some nasty monsters. Most notable is the spirit wolf, which can summon MORE spirit wolfs from off screen (which can themselves summon more) if you don't kill them quickly enough. And if you teleport away without killing them all, they are summoned just off screen from where you now are, and keep attacking.
