Yeah, lair is pretty consistent with what it holds.
Say that to my Troll Monk who met an hydra just around the first corner of L:1... :/

Hydras in L1 aren't exactly rare. And unlike orcs, hydras won't suddenly grow extra heads with weapon brands. Unlike orcs, hydras won't suddenly get a +3 to their attacks and AC. Unlike orcs, you won't suddenly bumb into a Lernaean Hydra.

I'm also generally more scared of Orc than Lair.  Generally you know whether you're ready or not for Lair.  Orc, who fucking knows. One time I full-cleared Orc as soon as I saw it, never broke a sweat.  One time I full cleared Lair, then went to Orc and died on the stairs.

Also, does anyone know what slowimp is?  I've heard it a couple times but never actually heard it explained aside from "summon imp, slow imp"

The only thing I can think of is using them to body-block, which now that I think of it is probably what it is.

I don't know but that does make sense.
My current DsIE got demonic guardian early. I get a free imp pretty much everytime I see an ogre or a giant. I flee to a corridor while the imp buys me a turn or two of distance before dying. Then I rip 'em a new one with throw icicle.

Also Ozocubu's Refrigeration is the best spell ever. Even without rC. Even if it forces me to drop my potions somewhere. So many dead orcs :o

Figured I'd try a GrEE since I'd never had an earth elementalist get off the ground. The first two died early, but my third attempt was really picking up steam. Level 13, worshipping Vehumet, wielding a staff of energy. Mostly breezing my way through Lair, with the exception of a couple close calls with hydras.

On Lair-5 I found a room with some treasure guarded by 3-4 Oklob plants. Left it alone because I had no way of easily dealing with them.

A bit later, I got swarmed by some death yaks on Lair-6 and pulled two of them up the stairs when escaping. They had me cornered and my health was getting low so I read a teleport scroll.

One guess where the teleport landed me. I didn't even have a chance to react.

:/ This is the second time a teleport has insta-killed a promising character for me. The first time I landed directly next to a giant spore which blew up on the same turn.

Sooo... where should I go after the Orc mines? I've never gotten this far an I'm kinda lost.
I'm playing a HOGl of Beogh. I had just 2 orc warriors with me from the beginning. They wielded bludgeons, which made fighting hydras a lot easier, as I was using an orcish great sword. By the time I left the lair, I had maxed my piety with Beogh and gained a large following when I entered O1.
I also had that Ogre vault spawn on O4. It cut my cult in half and I nearly died a couple of times in the glorious battle.

clear some more of the Dungeon, when things start getting too rough for your liking (probably around D:20 or so but this varies a lot) work on clearing the first 4 levels of your 3 main rune branches: snake -> swamp -> vaults

I just died on D14. Fighting plague shamblers apparently isn't good in narrow hallways. But I didn't even notice the shambler, just the eidolons throwing draining shots down the corridor, killing my orcs.

By the way, with his followers, the vaults may be a little bit easier (buffering the Invoker's recall) but Snake may cut the hord in half (no rPois), right ?

I am playing as a DeCj and things get smooth now. I can easily cast IMB, call battlesphere and fulminant prism. Also got Inner Flame (rarely use it, but once I had a fiery fun with a pack of ~8 orcs, 3 orc knights, troll, ogre and 2 orc priest) and Venom Bolt (must raise poison skill to cast it reliable and with better spellpower).
This run is plenty for portals - I visited sewers and bailey - where I found legendary deck. Never used them before. What decks are generally safe for blind draw?
I'm gonna ID this deck when I get a scroll, but I'm not going to ID each card.
I want to avoid shuffle which is in deck of wonders, but it may be worth IDin it for each card. If I get Experience card, it will surely bump me one level up and add 15k or 20k experience to my skills. Is is quite commont to be worth wasting ID scrolls?

The first small thing that made me feel awesome was my indoor waterfall. A few minutes later though, it started flooding my fort so I felt less awesome.

And one more question:
Where should I branch as a DeCj?
Last time I tried charms and fire magic and it worked well with fireball, repel missiles and battlesphere. Is there any other interesting options?
I was thinking about Ice magic with it's freezing cloud and ice storm (that looks quite reliable with 60% irreistible and damage roughly equal to fire storm).

My 3rd question for today will be "why conjurers train staves?".
Staff have very low damage and (as far as I know) thus serves the only purpose of being spell enhancer.
But I am watching for Temujin's DEWz game on CLAN and saw he got lvl 10 in staves. WHY?
He mostly use bolt of magma and I don't believe he has enough fire+earth+conj skill to attain maximum spellpower. Why don't he better switch fire magic training on and stop bashing that agate snail with his staff?

Is a ring of sustenance and ring of regeneration a good combo? They're the first two rings I got this run and the combination seems a little too generous for Crawl.

Regen is good, sustenance is nice to have but in no way necessary. Good loot to get that early. Now be on a lookout for that gnoll pack.

@goblolo:
Just because you're a caster doesn't mean you can't or shouldn't use melee. Anything that saves MP without killing you is worth it IMO. 10 levels in staves is fairly cheap by midgame (skill levels get progressively more expensive) and it turns you into a formidable fighter against weak, not-worth-the-MP enemies.

Why staves in particular? Deep elves get negative aptitudes for everything except short blades and staves, that could be it. Besides, a triple sword might outdamage a staff, but it also requires way more xp to use effectively. If you're a fighter that's ok, if you're a caster that's a ton of xp that could be going towards you're next bolt of whatever.

While playing Linesprint Okawaru gifted me a random artifact demon blade named Peabody.

The thought of a horrific weapon forged by demons in the depths of hell engraved with the name Peabody is just funny.

But staves suck in damage (don't think that wizard will use lajatng).
When confronted easy enemies it is not that worse to throw no-hunger bolt with 4-5 mana cost and don't bother with staves (esp. when you get half of the spent mana being returned). In tough situation you won't swing wildly and will rely on your best firepower.
And since you can trade 10 in staves to 1-3 in conjurations, I'd prefer maximizing my damage output. Or even train dodge instead for more survivability.
