Tm of Chei hasn't been a good idea since he stopped branding your gear, among the many reasons that thing you just mentioned (one fumbled step and you take a barrage of attacks).  Okawaru, Makhleb, those are better options.

I had a real spirit breaker today.  Gargoyle Gladiator using staves, was up to 12 points when I found Leech, the awesome vamp demonblade.  So I switched to long blades obviously.  Then I found Pearl Dragon Armor.  Then I found a randart ring with regen and my third pip of life protection.  Fuck shadow dragons, apparently

So while I'm tabbing my way through the pre-lair with my bullshit overpowered gear, I come to some weird level setup full of green crystal walls and a shitload of wizards.  Shitty wizards.  I tab them down, no big deal, except

except

wizards have the erolcha spellset

wizards have lcs

pearl dragon armor doesn't matter when you eat an lcs at level 12

Yeah, if I'D gotten such a wealth of bounty that early, I would have just outright quit, since that's a sure sign the game is about to buttfuck you HARD

No. I suppose there are similarities, but I'm fairly certain angry birds doesn't let me charge into a battalion of knights with a car made of circular saws.

Don't scare me. My DsIE's first mutation was demonic guardian. He also got spellbooks for Orb of Destruction and Ice Storm before entering lair. And of course pretty much every ice/conjuration spell in the levels 2-6 range to use while leveling up to those. Oh yeah and two potions of experience.

Only just cleared Lair2 so fingers crossed.

Something to keep in mind when fighting ogres and giants: xv them to see what they're wielding. With a great mace they're dangerous, with a giant (spiked) club they're downright deadly. Like with all intelligent critters their danger level depends on the weapons they wield.

I just got killed by a disto mace wielding Vault warden I was tabbing at really low health, and I approve of this message. Not all weapons are created equal.

Just died to a Hill Giant in the second game that I got Lightning Rod early on in. Now personally convinced Lightning Rod is one of the single most entertaining evokables, even for a straight up melee fighter build.

And in related news I just found out you can use Disc of Storms with rElec now.  I love that thing, even if it has killed me before.

Just discovered Monk's are actually far more valid than I thought, especially as a gargoyle. Then, on my second shot with the first ending in stupidity, I got flanked by Edmund, Sigmund, and Grinder in an open area, having not even found so much as a single tele scroll. Screw crawl -_-

AAARGH YASD RAGE POST!

This game started very cool. Uber cool, I must say. I took Deep Elf Conjurer, my favourite.
On D3 I found that I have 3 scrolls of magic mapping. Then I decided to try temple diving, and successfully found the temple on D6. Vehumet welcomed me and I started my dungeon clearing quest from D4. Somewhere about D6-7 I found staff of conjurations (yummi!) and Book of fire. Also, I tried to play mutation roulette because I had 2 potions of cure mutation, and the first potion of mutation granted me with talons, rC+ and Str+2.
All my way down to D10 was easy. Every monster I met died quickly without posing any threat to me. I found entrance to Orc at D8.
I bumped on to Josephine, pack of yellow bees and some othe monsters on D10 and found that all 3 stairs leads to this room being 3-4 squares one from another. I could mess with stair dancing a bit, but I decided to clear Orc1-3 first (has not found lair yet, should be somewhere on D10-12).
Later on I was throwing IMBs and Fireballs to orcs and my Battlesphere assisted me a lot. My skills was something like:
Spellcasting 11
Conjurations 11
Charms 9
Fire magic 9
I was able to cast fireball and IMB at 1-2% failure rate and I dired to level a bit in the Orc4 (really I wanted to clear it because when I accdentally moved down to Orc4, all the orc knights and wizards died quickly to my immense firepower. And I wanted some gear to be able to stay alive vs Josephine quite long time to blast her. The only thing I had that could help me is a +2 robe with rN+ and I wanted something of the artifact quality or some good boots/gloves/cloak).
I started to clear Orc 4 without any problems. Ork knights, wizards, trolls, all of them died from 1-2 fireballs (or even faster when my firepower is aided with battlesphere). And I run into unsuccessful combination of Ogre, 4 orc knights, orc sergeant and orc sorcerer. I prepared to run to stairs, but first I wanted to blast some of the orcs with fireballs to soften the pack as I wanted to return with another staircase. I started to throw fireballs and really killed ogre and knights. It was easy and I decided that I can handle this pack. Sergeant was nearly dead and 1 tile away from me. He should be dead with another one aided IMB and then I will devastate a sorcerer and his summons.
But then I was paralyzed with sorcerer's spell for more than 4 turns! All the summons and sergeant moved close to me, landed a lot of hits and drived me from 60hp down to -20 or so in 3 turns.

Lessons:
1. If you think that this pack is hard and killed some easy monsters first, don't think that the hard ones would be easy too.
2. Learn monster spells and think about how they can harm you before messing with them.
3. Don't even try Orc4 without stasis or MR boost.
4. Burn Orc4 with fiery rage! These bastards deserve it!

Pride comes before the fall. That's an easy feeling to get into. "Man orc is easy, I even killed a sorcerer on O2 and a high priest in O3, what's the worst that could happen at O4?". And every single time something much worse happens at O4.

With all the xp you earned in Orc1-3, couldn't you just have blasted Josephine to smithereens? Her simulacrums are as good as dead with your fireballs, you had rC+ to her bolt of cold and, well, you're a conjurer. You cast, everybody dies.

You are right, O4 is just a concentration of O2-O3 threats that isn't really a threat when they are alone.
Sure, I could blast Josephine with my fireball. And because I had rC+ from mutation and rC+ from robe, all her cold damage will be divided by 3. And on my first visit to D10 I took out 3 bees, croco and 1 more monster - they followed me upstairs to D9 where I blinked away and killed them.
Now I blame myself for being that stupid to kill such a cool (for early-game) character.

In trunk there's a really horrible O:4 endvault that's full of giants and ogres.

The O4 ogre vault is bad, but the random stone giant that killed me on O3 this tourney was worse. Orc is certainly unpredictable

Yeah, lair is pretty consistent with what it holds. With orc1-3 you never know if it's three levels of orcs, priests and wizards, or three levels of trolls, high priests and knights with reaching distort weapons.
