The old loss of XP from draining was a) fairly small and b) didn't affect your skills, which were the important use of XP.  The new one is more dangerous.

Maybe next version they'll do both : permanent great loss of skills and levels, as there's always ways to cripple/nerf the player more in Crawl.

Anyways, i had a great run with the Sprint map called " ||||||||||||||||||| " with a Berserker Gargoyle.
It's as if that sprint map (it's a very very long corridor with some doors and corners so you can sometime get your breath back :D, so no real tactic but moving forward or backward) was actually made for such a character and happily i managed to get a win (major thanks to the vampiric artifact great mace i was using, it was a fantastic weapon as it deals great damage and so can heal back nicely).

There were several part of that map that were really hard, some monsters i only survived thanks to my inventory

In the end after fetching the orb, i noticed that behind it there was another door " door to Extended endgame " but considering the high difficulty i had to get there and survive, i decided to go with the regular win instead of risking my gargoyle neck there :D

It was extremely boring unfortunately to go back though, taking forever with this long, very long corridor, and those damned demons spawning around constantly (and with no way to move out of their way as it's a 1 tile corridor), good my character by that time was really powerfull and the Sprint gameplay increase the faith gain too because i had to use a lot of Trog hand , ran out of potions and so many high level demons and lords...

That's the only part of that sprint map that was not fun at all.

My most difficult battle was in fact at roughly 2/3 of the map, when i ran into Ereshkigal that teleported behind me while the other way of the corridor was blocked by a big bunch of demons and vault guards...
Her silencing was nearly the death of my character, only survived thanks to my stockpile of heal wound potions, and finally managed to put an end to this extremely hard to hit monster (can't believe how much "miss" i had on her ) with my last berserk potion (as due to silencing i couldn't go berserk by ability)

Pop down to level 4 as a DSHu, see a Shrine to Okawaru, celebrate prematurely as suddenly I'm a pig.

Since when did...? Oh that damn Sigmund! Always with the killing and the Polymorphing! At least I was able to stair escape.

EDIT: Ambushed me when I was three squares from some downward steps, turned me into a tree and proceeded to burn all my scrolls before I narrowly escaped while he closed in.

It's really fun.

Elf isn't really for anyone.  Like, it's pretty doable for a high level character, but there isn't much reason to.
except for the ton of loot at the end and all that juicy xp on the way

Guys, help.
I'm a deep elf conjurer, and there's a centaur on the next floor.
I'm wearing a gourmand amulet, so I can chill on this floor for a while, but what do I do?

Go to the next floor through another set of stair that do not end with you in view of the centaur ?

For Elven Halls without access to some ice/poison/fire cloud spell, i wouldn't really go to the Elf big vault in the end, in fact with a melee magic-less character i simply wouldn't go there at all, too many hard hitting monsters surrounding you in no time due to the amount of elf summoners there.
You really need something that can kill -fast- big areas.

protip: don't charge in and let yourself get surrounded

the high-level elves on the last level are really little more than an easy version of the Draconians and Friends that you are going to face in Zot

By the time you can beat it, you generally don't need either.  And you'll probably get banished a lot which almost always outweighs the benefits.

if you can't get your MR high enough to avoid banishment in Elf then you are going to get banished a lot in Zot too, but with all that loot at the end of Elf perhaps you will find an MR ring to help you out...

or perhaps not, tough call

Not really.  Several elves have the banishment spell, while none of the Zot regulars other than sometimes Ancient Liches do as of 0.13.

On the few times i reached/cleared Zot (though i never went to Zot in 0.12 / 0.13 yet)  i don't remember having been banished once from it, while from Elven Halls it occured many time, even at high MR.
