God damn, last night I dreamt I was trying to make a Gargoyle Berzerker in Trunk, and the game kept forcing me to play Fire Giants and orcs that can transform in one and two-headed Ogres and the tiles were all painting-like and then a colleague from work appearead as a headhunter and arrested me away from my pc. What in the balls.

Perhaps it is time to stop playing.

EhhhmhmmhmmyouknowOHMYGOODNESSLOOKATTHETIME!

Question time!

On my current HOGl I have a +14 Crystal plate mail [+6 dmg] and a maximally enchanted +12 Gold Dragon Armour. I have 23 str and 23 int, because I thought I'd be casting Enchantments, but I found a ring [-cast, rF+, rN+, MR+, Acc+2, Dmg+6 Stlth++] so I probably won't be. I also have 0 magic-related skills, because Trog.

I also have 27 axes and 27 bows, and a +4/+5 Antimagic Executioner axe, as well as a +0/+7 Longbow of freezing. I'm currently using a +0/+7 Vampiric Battle Axe. I have enough scrolls to make both weapons pretty decent.

When I eventually switch to TSO, should I bless the Axe, or the longbow? I guess I should probably wear the GDA, but it has 27 encumbrance rating, whereas the CPM has only 24. Also I really like the look of the CPM, but I don't think that really matters in the grand scheme of things.

Innate Abilities, Weirdness & Mutations

You can tolerate rotten meat.
You are partially covered in slimy green scales (AC +2).
Your vision is a little blurry.
You possess an exceptional clarity of mind.
You have a considerably increased reservoir of magic (+20% MP).

Extended is bullshit and worst of all, it's boring I didn't even die to anything significant - it's just hellfirehellfirehellfire oh wait this last rat skeleton actually managed to hit you for your last hp.

I had healing and teleport and could've escaped no problem, but every single time the stupid repetition dulls my mind and situations that I've gone through a thousand times without dying end up killing me.

My character wasn't really optimal. Bows are safe but ammo can go fuck itself and I used it extremely rarely. I never cast a single spell, too, so all that int could've gone into str so I can carry more stuff. However anti-magic is quite awesome in extended, I was surprised. It works on demons, Pan lords and Hell princes from what I can tell, so all you need to do is get in range. I think it also doesn't stop you from casting, so you can get haste and controlled blink, even if you'll have a total of 10 mana wielding it. Nevertheless, something I might try next time.

So, gargoyles.
Quote
You are resistant to torment.
You are immune to poison.
Your stone body is very resilient (AC +8). [this one increases as you level up - this is for a level 7 character)
You have very sharp teeth.
You have razor-sharp toenails.
You resist negative energy.
You are resistant to electric shocks.
You have a slow metabolism.
You can survive without breathing.
You are immune to petrification.
[later they gain the ability to fly]

They lose no slots, and other than a -2 HP apt and vulnerability to shatter/LRD I can't see many downsides to them (their apts aren't great, but they're very much usable).  They just have way more AC than anything else and a few other nice bonuses.

Meanwhile, Djini have their MP pool as their HP pool, so casting spells literally kills you. The only upside to them I noted is no hunger.

But MP restoration (channeling) heals you. And you'll have a much larger MP pool than other races.

But MP restoration also builds glow. And glow decays slower.

But glow grants "temporary mutations." (Not sure what happens if you max it out. Doesn't it get directly fatal for normal races? Maybe I'll try that next game.)

Also, pure fire immunity (including hellfire, which is nice) and the ability to lev (pass lava/deep water) on a whim. I think the plan is also that they can't use scrolls (being made entirely of fire or something) but I don't know if that's actually going to happen; they seem to use them fine in my trunk version (which is a month old or so).

How big is their HMP pool?  If it's bigger than a regular HP pool you could use it as a pure melee character.

I don't think it ever gets directly fatal, but you can suffer damage from glowsplosions and stuff... although it would take a fair bit of effort to get that to happen unless you're doing something ridiculous like channeling constantly while casting really high-level spells.

Why are you playing an old version of trunk? Just play online so it automatically updates.

Anyway, they can use scrolls. It's worth noting that they hover over water; it's not the same as the old levitation effect. When over water or lava, djinn are slowed down, similarly to the Slow effect.

Djinn are definitely fun, although I personally don't think they even need their essence cost for spells doubled compared to MP. Also worth noting is that they have innate rN+++ and really good aptitudes for being a fire elementalist.

I play offline trunk because online tiles doesn't have all the same bells and whistles.

It's no big deal really.

I think humans need slightly less experience to level, but I'm not sure.

Shoots. I seem to have bad luck with humans. Usually, I'm in a corridor, trying to keep some space between me and an ogre and a fucking adder or imp decides to wander in my direction.

Unless there are other hidden factors, humans have the same experience modifier as halflings and kobolds (+1). Arguably they could be a challenge race in the sense that while most races have weaknesses, they also have strengths and players generally accomodate those strengths. Human doesn't necessarily have weaknesses, just a lack of strengths.

I did pretty good with a human monk who used shields after a few levels of dungeon. He found a pretty nice artifact shield early though so that's probably why.

When I was 8, my grandfather got a batch of floppy disks in that included something called "Hack". It was horrible to install (the week long struggle we had sorting out ANSI vs. NANSI is burned into my skull), but inevitably I was left alone in a gorgeous ascii world where mail daemons flitted about and I always starved to death or died drinking the wrong potion. I continued playing off and on through nethack until it's development stalled and eventually moved to DCSS, which seems like the proper successor to the franchise that started back in rogue.

So today, after 29 years of playing this game series, I finally won. My minotaur slung the Orb over his back, booked like Jehu, flicked off the demon hoards on his trail, and ascended. I could have done this decades ago if I wanted to, just hunkered down, screamed, "You and me, f'er!" and nailed the thing down, but I suppose that would have missed the point. Like DF, the story you follow has meaning because it can go anywhere and end so quickly. Pull the wrong switch, dig the wrong square, hold down the right arrow key to try and get through a section, BAM, it's all over. But it is an unfolding story pregnant with near infinite variation. The complexity, harshness, and finality have been the draws that make games like the Rogue-like continuum and DF worth the playing.

I only hope that I can get 3 decades of enjoyment, head-smacking/keyboard crushing frustration, and fulfillment out of DF as I have out of Rogue-likes. I'm off to have a Zottish drink.
