Aw man, sucks to hear that, hope things get better for you IRL  :(

After my last embarrassing death, I started a MiBe, because I'm not entitled to think of myself as a good player anymore. However, I'm afraid I might be legally retarded. I dumped all my stats into Int, hoping to cast Haste since it worked out well last time. However I am a Troglodite, which I apparently forgot, and now I have max Fighting, Axes, Dodging and Armour, 37 AC 20 EV in a randart +7 plate, and zero casting skills. I do have a pretty nice vampiric Exec axe, but if I ditch Trog for TSO I won't be able to use it, and if I wear a Dragon Armour I get to 26 AC 24 EV. I'm really doubtful of my chances of surviving Trog wrath, especially without any spells, since it'd take so long to get them castable.

God damn it.

Well, a busy RL weekend somewhat limited my crawl time, but I managed to bring my TeFE home, my first winner to ascend with more than the standard 2 x Lair + Vaults runes. Admittedly only one extra rune, but still.

Code: [Select]
Dungeon Crawl Stone Soup version 0.12.1-43-gbc5e171 (console) character file.

             Escaped with the Orb
             ... and 4 runes on May 26, 2013!

The game lasted 17:09:10 (118903 turns).

I never found the Regen spell, which kinda made the hells a bit scary, and considering the time now, and my early morning start, I am quietly satisfied. Seriously awesome offense capabilities though - fire tornado storms are so pretty.

The log

Looks like our efforts *might* be enough to secure the Bay12 Procrastinators a top 20 spot - we are 19th right now, with 5 hours still to play.

Woot, got one last win off with an ogre hunter.   :D That Zot 5 was really stupid. After I picked up the orb, so many nasty things spawned. Two orbs of fire, an ancient lich, a bunch of draconians, and a few hellhounds to keep me preoccupied. I got down to 20ish health just on that floor and had to quaff all my healing potions. Probably could've done more than 3 runes, but whatever. Cheers for the end of the tourney.

Aw man, am I the only one who messed up not once, but twice in the last two days? Good. Congratulations, everyone! I had never played in a tournament before,  this was surprisingly fun, even with the horrible latency I get on the webtiles servers. Feels fun knowing your win is contributing to a team :) Also made me try a lot of things I probably wouldn't, seeing what was most popular and what other people were playing.

When's the next tourney, anyway? I kind of want to do this again  :D

I THINK it's some time next year. I can't do this again anytime soon, because the only game I played this month was dungeon crawl. Right now my sanity is about to plunge into a state long past repair. Not really. But seriously though, I need a break. I do look forward to next year though.

You'll probably prefer to fight in the open on a caster, since His Highness spawns stuff when it's hit but the firestorms will hit it all, and the vortexes might even baffle Him for a while.

Most casters don't know Firestorm.

Abyss is boring and horrible, Pan is generally easier than the Hells, and is very slightly less boring and horrible than the Abyss, Tomb can go fuck itself.

The Abyss is a little better now that you can control the relative risk and reward by diving deeper (or not), although the new monsters are horrifying for characters who aren't prepared for them.

Tomb is a pain in the ass, but pretty damn easy if you worship Kiku or have Necromutation, since the mummy death curses won't do squat to you. Statue Form helps a lot otherwise, since it gives you rN+, halves torment damage, and prevents rotting.

Question about scroll of acquirement : do the item spawned "goodness" scale with your level, or can you obtain by example an "axe of awesome +50,+50" if you use the scroll while being level 1 or being level 20 with the same kind of chances ?

I don't think it scales with your level.  It is usually something you can use (you might get a sword as an axe-user, but usually not) and you can get super awesome stuff at low levels.

They do not scale with your level.

However, the chance to get any item *does* scale with what you have seen so far. If you wish for jewellery for example, you are pretty much guaranteed to get a piece of jewellery you haven't seen before.
The probability to get something also scales with your skills. You are more likely to get a sword if you have high sword skill, or a earth staff if earth magic is your highest magic skill (and you haven't already found one).

This means that if you wait longer, you will probably end up getting something more useful (since the probability for a rarer item will increase as you get the more common ones), but I think its usually better to use them immediately.

It's nowhere near a win, but it's five times better than what I've done before. Probably because I opted to bypass the Orc Mines.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)

I became attached to that orcish spear. Found it when it was around +0/+2 and couldn't find a more useful polearm. I especially liked finding my first ever scroll of vorpalise weapon. This run was also my best strategy-wise. I actually remembered that spears can attack another square out! This was really the run I needed to boost confidence, since I got my best score with by far the weakest overall equipment I've had when I reach Dungeon:10. First time in Lair and Snake Pit too, so I expected to die there. Which is why I kept that scroll, for going out with a bang.

Congratulations on your progress!

A few pointers, since your run didn't actually have to end there :) Most importantly - read about everything here : http://crawl.develz.org/wordpress/bots

- Your shield skill is way too low for a Large Shield. A large shield requires 25 skill to negate the melee penalties. You had a lot of blocking, but it decreased your melee speed, which is kind of bad for people who hit things. For a normal sized race Buckler/Shield/Large shield requires 5/15/25 skill to remove all evasion, melee speed and casting penalties.

- You have a lot of unidentified  wands. Don't. Zap wands, that's what they're there for.

- You had scrolls of teleportation and potions of speed, so you could've gone out of the whole predicament a lot earlier. Try to learn when it's time to disengage - Crawl is mostly about running away.

- Don't be afraid to spam god abilities if you're in dangerous situations. There will always be -1 animal skins for Oka to throw at you, if only you survive the current encounter.

- Don't skip Orc. The main threats there [Orc Sorcerers and High Priests, Warlords] can be avoided, so go get some free piety, especially with gifting gods like Okawaru and Trog.

-Your branch order should roughly always be : Dungeon till Lair -> Lair till [Death Yaks, Lindwyrms, Catoblepas, any other great threat] -> Orc till great threat -> Lair Branches till great threat/last level OR dungeon till about D:20 or great threat -> the other option -> Vaults till V:4 -> Lair Branch ends/rest of Dungeon -> V:5. Elf is kind of odd, you'll have to learn when your current character can handle it. It has summon spam, crystal spears, banishing and other nasty stuff.

This order varies depending on character - for example on almost all my HEIEs I go Lair-> Orc -> Both branches -> Elf -> dungeon. If you have a good kit for a particular branch end, go for it as soon as you feel comfortable.

Basically the principle is poke your head in places until you start having difficult encounters, then leave and go poke your head in other places. This gives a fluid progression that optimises the experience and items you can get before tackling major threats.

Orc would probably also give you a branded trident, which is a lot better than a spear of piercing.

Other than that, I wish you even better luck with future runs :D

Yeah, my biggest problem is getting caught up in the moment and forgetting about abilities and items. Except if I want to go out with a bang, apparently. :p
And thanks very much for the advice! Definitely better than me beating my head against the walls of the dungeon trying to figure out what's going on.

Spoiler (click to show/hide)
What was wrong with that trident? Are you aware of the difference between base damage and weapon enchantment? A trident has 3 more base damage, and is therefore a lot better than the spear. A +0 trident is in fact generally a fair bit better than a +3 spear, due to the way weapon damage is calculated - base damage gets multiplied by your weapon skill, enchantment just gets added at the end. Damage is complicated, and you mustn't forget weapon speed considerations, but basically you want the highest base damage weapon you can wield at a decent speed.
