I started watching NEW Fist of the North Star recently, which I was inspired to do after hearing about it again from Aqizzar.

It's an OVA, and is much prettier in the art department. There's also, I believe, much more gore. With the main series, the gore would change colors or disappear, and there wouldn't be any organs, the enemies would just pop like bloody balloons and the show would sort of skim over how brutal their deaths are. In NEW fist of the North Star, when the enemies explodes, there's brains EVERYWHERE and you can feel that the show really wants you to see the graphic injuries of the generic villains.

Though, even though I only watched 12 episodes of the main series, you can really see that the main FotNS formula hasn't been altered at all.

1.introduction to innocent villagers.
2.intro to generic bad guys
3.Kenshiro jumps in and kicks ass effortlessly.
4.Overly sappy backstory is shoehorned in shamelessly.
5.Kenshiro kicks more ass effortlessly.
6.Small child is killed for no reason.

It really is like the show, which is sort of a bad thing, since Kenshiro is a boring invincible protagonist. The OVA is only three episodes long, and each episode is an hour long, and I'm still on the second episode, so we'll see how things turn out.

Anyone have other suggestions for depressing/twisted/'dark' anime?

Always had a soft spot for Serial Experiments Lain, but maybe, having not watched it for over 6 years, I shouldn't be so quick to recommend it... I think it was pretty dark and awesome though. I think.

I oughta rewatch that actually.

Me too, I've only read the manga but after I finish the mound of manga and anima I'm reading/watching I'm gonna start on that.

I know it takes about three months to read an 100 chapter manga when you don't have much time and keep doing other things.

Funny, some people call me "L" due to behavior (they also do that because it's a lot easier to say than my real name).

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni (When The Cicadas Cry) for sure.
Watch the first four episodes and spend the next four days completely fucked up.

Darker Than Black is also a good "dark" anime, try watching the first two episodes of that sometime (The show is basically divided into 2-episode chapters).

Someone asked for a dark anima. I've found something that's kinda dark but a lot more violent. Serise called Elfen Lied, it's about a genetic mutation that's apparently meant to be the next evolution of man kind. But man doesn't want the new race to exist as it would destroy the current stage of mankind.
