Evangelion is basically the father of the 'serious mecha' type of Anime, so it's not surprising you know alot about it.

I'll be honest, I didn't make it to the end. I didn't even make it to the middle. Maybe it got really good at some point. But after about a dozen episodes it was still just a bunch of unlikeable characters flying around in surfing robots, and I gave up.

It was kind of slow paced, or so I've been told.  I never really noticed.  If that's what you thought about it it's probably just not your thing.  If you can stomach the fact that so much of the footage is reused from the show you'd probably like the movie allot more.  Most of the characters look exactly the same but they're otherwise completely different.  It's basically Eureka Seven in name only.

The Scub/Scab Coral wanted to learn about humans and interact with them, but the only way it knew how was by absorbing them into itself.  Eventually, it came up with the idea of making the human type Coralians (Eureka and Sakuya) to interact with humans on their own terms.  Coralian is as far as I can tell a general term for something created by the Scub Coral that isn't it's natural coral form.  The Antibody Coralians that they're fighting at the end are similar.  A lot of the story has to do with that book Holland and Dewy are always reading.  "The Golden Bough".
