Well, if you say something's "Good", that probably means you like it, and vice versa.  Unless you're making some kind of strange So Bad it's Good comment.

Not necessarily. You can appreciate something as being 'good' without particularly liking it. For example, I thought Sin City was an excellent movie, even though I didn't care for it all that much.

I tried to think of an anime example, but couldn't think of one off the top of my head that I thought was good but didn't really like.

Ok, fair enough.  Although this sortof thing tends to be more common among ancient texts (I sometimes get this feeling when reading stuff like Shakespear, although I normally enjoy it when a performance is actually staged) I suppose it could happen in other media too.  Hmm, anyone got an anime example?

Elfen Lied was pretty dreary, I'll give you that, but it's by no means depressing. From episode 1 it lets you know how serious it is, and there's almost no contrast to really screw with your emotions. Unless you count Dumb Lucy.

And NGE is such a pretty old example, pretty much everyone's seen it in it's entirety already.

Which does not, in any way, change the fact that it is an incredibly disturbing anime.


Most modern anime's don't go with the Crapsack World path; it makes people sad, and sad people are no good. Hence why you see alot of happy shiny animes like Love Hina and One Piece and soforth, with the occasional 'silly-serious' anime like Bleach or Mahou Sensei Negima.

Ehh Gory animes rarely feel legitimately depressing because it usually involved sad people who try to envoke sympathy who then go on to murder massive amounts of people.

It just ends up feeling derranged.

Especially Elfen Lied.

Though that is only because I am highly empathetic.

I felt the ending of EL was kind of lame. "Look at me! I'm the alternate personality saving your life after dying!".
