ech can anyone tell me whats going on in attack on titan anymore? The constant cliffhangers and non-explanations of things have long left the realm of suspense and entered into needlessly frustrating.

after looking into the manga...things make much more sense. Looks like they really cocked it up storywise with the anime. They dropped apparently half the dialogue which leads to the rather incoherent discussion they had in the last episode.

Guess i'm gonna give up on the anime and start reading the manga...

Decided to check out Konosuba, and I've heard that it was full of fanservice, but, wow.

Yeah, but it's still mega-tame compared to fanservice gold medalists. Frequent anime viewers have a much higher tolerance for that sort of thing, to the point that it's just seen as background noise.

The stuff with fanservice where it's meant to be "otaku: this series is chock full of fanservice". That's the heavy duty stuff. e.g. Keijo is on the low end of that sort of thing.

I guess it is pretty tame compared to, that, thing, I think it was Keijo? I got full weirded out by a single 4 minute clip from it.

Actually I just posted about that. Keijo is actually "xTreme Fanservice: Lite Edition".

Highschool DxD (2012) is the tame end of the extreme stuff. After DxD things started to really ramp up, because they got away with full frontal nude titties on the broadcast TV version. Studios who do that sort of stuff started to see exactly how far they could push things after that.

Yeah Japan's getting pretty weird with that direction, it's almost like if anime has become a legal front for their porn industry.

That's mainly because porn is so tightly regulated in Japan.

But this sort of anime/manga is also far more mainstream with western viewers/readers than it actually is in Japan. e.g. for a while I've been posting here about the weekly manga sales charts from both Japan and America.

Two fetish series, Highschool DxD and Daily Life with Monster Girls, both hit the nytimes top 10 manga on every volume. But you can look in the top 50 manga sales charts from Japan, and those types of series don't even appear.

So sure, this stuff exists, but there's what I call a cultural filter. The west weeds out most of the mainstream anime and manga that has broad appeal in Japan and inflates the cultural relevance of a few niche fetish series. And if you talk to random Japanese people they have often not even heard of these sorts of series that 90% of western fans know about.

Hmm but isnt Keijo more or less making fun of all the fanservicy stuff? I thought that was the idea behind it?

I think that saying anything that uses smut is a "parody" has become something of a crutch.

Basically every fanservice comedy hams it up to 11 to make it's fanservice as ridiculous and over the top compared to every other fanservice series. Ecchi/harem/fanservice shows are, by their nature, parodic comedy. But they're both parodies and the thing they are parodying at the same time.

e.g. Aesthetics of a Rogue Hero. The hero has a special martial arts move in which he steals a woman's underwear (somehow ... through her clothes), shows it off, then they have "clothes explosion" afterwards, causing embarassed nudity. Is that "serious" fanservice, or a "parody". Clearly it's parodying both martial arts shows, and shows where they tack in female nudity. But it is the real deal, as well as being a parody. Similar for most fanservice shows.

If a show wants to parody fanservice meaningfully, then you have to subvert the trope. e.g. have the set-up for the fanservice moment, then derail it to something else. Carrying through the fanservice then going "haha there was innappropriate fanservice. laugh now" isn't a meaningful parody, because it doesn't make a statement that any other show of the genre hasn't already made.

What about a show where the hero has a special martial arts move where he steals a girls panties, and then shows them off, and then their clothes explode off of them with their skin? Idea from the mind behind Saya no Uta and other such fucked up ideas

Mind you it might not be because "it isn't popular" but because they might outright not list that material.

Either that or where they can sell it is limited in some way.
