Wooden swords don't really seem that cool to me, or nearly as useful in a fight, for that matter :P

Oh yeah, I do usually think Katanas are overdone, but a regular sized meat clever? C'mon now. Get a claymore. Or a boardsword. Or a Zweihander, or...
You get it.

It anime Katanas are used rather sparingly.

I know this is odd to say... But I think Katanas are more overdone in western media.

HECK Shadowrun 5th? Katana is the ONLY named sword in the rulebook with "Sword" just being a generic one handed sword. It is also the only weapon in the Shadowrun videogame.

The sword that features in Startrek? A Katana. Reason? Racism (No... really.)

While in Samurai Warriors the game that justifies a lot of Katanas actually uses them pretty sparingly. I think only about 3 characters of their entire cast actually use them and they are the characters who are famos for the Katana. Dynasty Warriors likewise only has two Katana users of their immense cast.

You would be surprised how effective wooden swords can be. To the extent that there is a Japanese Proverb that goes something like "It is possible to die from the wooden sword".

There are reasons why people pretty much stick to Kendo sticks and ditched the wooden swords.

Exotic things are just mundane things where they come from.

Japanese popular culture seems more interested in various European late middle ages and renaissance design, some Chinese designs and lots of lots of fantasy stuff.

The bulk of anime/manga featuring any swords at all are fantasy, which will generally lean more towards exotic inspirations for their designs. There's plenty (semi-)historic animu of course, plenty katanas to be found in those.

Though now that I think about it I don't recall seeing any anime featuring a fully historically accurate feudal Japan setting. All the ones I came across threw some completely made up stuff in the mix sooner or later (Samurai Champloo... love that show though).

Dude, size matters less than what you can do with it. Remember that Viral (the nerd you mentioned) was dominating the fight against Kamina with his little cleaver/sword.

You'll need to friend me though, I'm pretty sure my tag is bfel001. If it isn't that it'll be bfel01. Can never remember which it is for the life of me.

Wait Bleach STILL isn't over? It just keeps hitting natural stopping points.
It should have ended after the Soul Society arc. Everything after that is goofy and exists only because Titty Cubone likes having steady work.

Well yeah... but it also hit several arcs where it could have ended elegantly.

Inuyasha stretched out the plot unbearably usually by having the villain escape their guaranteed death (One time outright narrating that he was alive)

Bleach just keeps hitting the "keep playing" button everytime they finish.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Isn't that the one where the main character has god-like power and every girl is in love with him for the most mundane things? Those seem to be the two most common complaints about it I've heard.

... though yeah, if you're looking for something to watch that's a bit of a ride, consider Dead Leaves if y'all haven't seen it yet. It's just a movie, but it's a hell of a movie.
