I'm fresh off a watch of 'minami-ke' (1st season), which was a totally fun watch. Any episode featuring Hosaka had me dying laughing, and I think the writers realized how funny he was because the final-scene of season-one was literally of him. Also the "Sensei and Ninomiya-kun" gag just kept getting better every time it appeared. The show itself reminded me of 'daily lives of high school boys' quite a bit, in humor and episodic nature.

Yesterday I attempted to begin watching 'a certain scientific railgun' because imgur.com told me that it was basically 'X-men'; after five episodes I found it to be almost completely unappealing to me.

So next up on my list of stuff-I-should-probably-watch is 'Spice & Wolf' and/or 'Mushishi'.

Suggestions always welcome, I'm a sucker for SoL.

The failure was Rei, in case anyone was that oblivious.
Clearly, it was Aoba. I mean, just look at him.  Something went seriously wrong there.  You don't recover from a thing like that.
Actually, I'd guess Maya. She was far too well-balanced despite the identity of the object of her interest.

Or Rei I. She failed at being a sympathetic murder victim and then also failed at being a crazy cyborg war machine.

The idea that she was "deliberately unappealing" or was some sort of meta-commentary on Otaku. I've looked into this. There's no basis for that. Gainax even made their own Rei porn games you can buy. The opening shot of Rei in the TV show is a close-up on her tits & crotch. Gainax created "Rei smut" in the first place. The idea that they then were all high-and-mighty going "look at you losers, being attracted to the sexualized girl we created! Shame on you!" What a lot of shit. The guy making soft porn doesn't get to say that.
You can't equate corporate actions with the authorial intent of the creator. Plenty of creators have had companies do things to their characters that they didn't approve of. That's the whole reason for the creation of Mickey Mouse: Oswald the Lucky Rabbit got hijacked because Walt wasn't strict enough with his copyright paperwork, so Walt had to make a knock-off of his own creative progeny, a la Mighty Number 9.

It's true that Rei is sexualized in the show itself. But the way in which she is sexualized is accentuated by her passive nature. Perhaps she was meant to make the viewer question why he was attracted to such a character. Maybe Anno really did fetishize her because she was meant to be a representation of unhealthy otaku fetishism. Toward the end (including the End) of Evangelion, much of her characterization is turned on its head. Maybe that's to make the viewer assess whether or not he is more or less attracted to her after the transition, and question if her submissive demeanor made her more attractive to him. A lot of Anno's legendary contempt for otaku is just fan speculation, but as they say, "Anno has no bloody clue; fanwank something." Make what you want of the series and of the characters, because Anno sure as hell isn't talking.

(my avatar's resemblance to Rei is entirely coincidental.)

ANYWAY

I've started watching Retarded Dragon Girls Zettai Bouei Leviathan. Someone told me it read like a D&D campaign, with the way characters act, and I'm definitely seeing the resemblance. Not as obvious as Slayers, primarily because it isn't a Gygaxian fantasy setting like that show, but still pretty clear. This looks like it's going to be a fun ride.

And Yet The Town Moves was really funny. Doesn't get much mention.

Working was pretty good. The manga is completed, and the anime reached the conclusion recently.

Hidamari Sketch needs more love too.

I keep wanting to suggest Tamako Market even though I can't remember if it was any good or not.

Working was pretty good. The manga is completed, and the anime reached the conclusion recently.
By the same author is Servant x Service which is quite a bit better IMO.

Oh, and also, more recently, Osomatsu-san. You'll have to get the first episode either from torrenting or from shitty illegal streaming sites, since it had some legal issues regarding copyright that caused it to be taken down from the legal streaming sites, but it's a great little series.

I'm just waiting for the PMMM reactions here
You're about half a decade late for that.

TIL two days ago was half a decade ago.

Yeah, but one of those days was Groundhog Day. It just kept happening. Might have been half a decade of time compressed into there. Who knows.

Nichijou is like the archetypal SoL.

If you want something from this season, Kuma Miko is great.

I don't know if I'd call Nichijou the archetypical SoL. A whole lot more happens in Nichijou than in most SoL shows, although not much of it sticks from episode to episode. I like to call it "Slice-of-Larger-Than-Life".

While Nichijou will always live on in my heart, I feel the best thing it did was introduce me to Hyadain. I still will re-listen to the Opening songs of the series every now and again just because they're so quirky and fun. When I heard Hyadain's voice in the Ending song of Kuroko's Basketball, I almost flipped my shit it was so unexpected.

Hyadain is funny. He voices everything. Including the female parts. It's part of his schtick.

Yeah he's great, I have nearly every single one of his songs downloaded to my computer, and I'll just listen to them when I'm in the mood for it. My favorite is Sabin Raps.

In other news, I caved into my Pirate's Remorse and got an actual Crunchyroll account. The streaming service chokes up more frequently than I care for, but it's trying really hard to attractively sell what honestly can be nabbed for free in the backalleys of the internet, and that's honestly kinda what I need, since mustering up motivation to watch stuff is hard unless I have a 3rd party reminding me WHY something is cool and I should watch it.
