I watched the whole first season and the highlight was definitely when the main character had a fight with a bear for no reason in episode 1.

I love the little kid backpack that Phoenix Wright has! Atleast I'm pretty sure that's the style that Japanses schoolchildren use, and not a professional backmounted lawyer toolbox.

So there's an anime which has come out this season which I can't remember the name of.
It's basically sci-fi supersoldiers with animal DNA fighting cockroach-people on mars.

Which was an awesome premise, but I've just hit episode 7 and I just can't stand it. Everything is a dramatic flashback, everyone is boring, and all of the girls are useless, as always, thank you Japan.

That's probably why he said "as always, thank you Japan". Heck, I just finished watching the Bubblegum Crisis OVA as part of my 80s kick, and you can see that even in an all-girl ensemble, the "girly girls" (Nene, especially) perform much worse than the tough girl (Priss) and the leader (Sylia).

The manga has a big following. I think it's one of those things where most people don't see the appeal, but the fanbase is big and crazy enough that it still blows up, like homestuck, undertale, twilight, MLP, etc.

I read something like half the chapters. It was interesting at first but got very very boring.

I watched this 1980's OVA by Mamoru Oshii recently called Dallos, it was ok / nostalgic, about slave miners on the moon who rebel against a dictatorship. I was amused reading the typical user reviews, where the authors clearly don't understand actual society at all:

In fact, I can hardly sympathize with miners' disputations: they don't seem to starve to death, they live on nice, spacious, clean adobe houses with all their families, they're allowed to worship Dallos, they have a beautiful park with frisking swans...

Um, okaaaaaay, so they're fed and housed and the city is well-maintained, and they get to worship a fake god. What more in life could you possibly want? Maybe the bit they're rebelling against is the dictatorship / slave labour thing, and the fact that they're not allowed to go anywhere, and they get shoved into recycling tanks when they die. But hey man, they give you all the protein supplements you want and there's a nice park, so stop whining, slaves! The reviewer then goes on to mention the "ID headbands" (24/7 tracking devices on the entire population), but says they're justified because of the "terrorists" (the rebels). I'm guessing this reviewer would also justify a bit of waterboarding.

It just makes me chuckle, since there are so many unrealistic things in anime that you can pick on, but some people seem to be capable of singling-out stuff that would actually make sense in real life.

This is actually the main reason why I was surprised at the news of a second season. Not only is it a damn weird premise, but the anime got censored to ludicrous degrees. I thought the general mood at the time was that folks shouldn't be supporting that sort of thing.

Japanese people are less anti-censorship than the west. And I imagine the BDs weren't so bad.

So one thing I liked about the Videogame Valkyria Chronicles versus the anime one is how much it fought against anime stereotypes.

The characters felt like people and not anime character tropes (outside a few things here and there).

Then came Valkyria Chronicles 2 and OHH BOY is it anime... But why bring it up here?

Because the main Trio is the main trio of Gundam Build Fighters Tri...... and several other animes out there (I haven't got far, for all I know it is using anime stereotypes to pull the rug under you with the "war is hell" message... but I am not hopeful there).

I realized just how many animes use this team:
-The natural
-The support
-The Specialist / Highborn

Right down to them having the same hair colors
-The Redhead
-The blonde
-The raven haired.

Why Valkyria Chronicles 2? You are a GOOD series... why lazy up your character archtypes?
