Astonishing. You managed to be both incredibly pedantic and incredibly dismissive of pedantry in the same three-line post.
I'm here all week.

Although I don't know which line is supposed to be which.

*grumbles angrily about how horribly the Red Dragon anime mangled the source material*
They made a Red Dragon anime? Huh. That was quite fast.

picking fights
I was just talking. If you're feeling persecuted then whatever, we'll leave it as it is.

Yeah, a "game" in which you click through story content, and occasionally pick a dialogue/action choice. Most of the dialogue choices have no impact whatsoever - they just merge back into the main story a few clicks later. And each route has exactly one "true ending" (as far as I am aware), and a number of "bad ends" - where you made the wrong choice a die with a simple "game over, try again" type thing.
Well, the details can vary a good bit. It's not super rare for a VN to lack bad ends, and not unheard of for them to lack any choices at all.

Huh, people click? I usually use the spacebar/automode.
I click. Automode is pretty much impossible to get at the exact speed I read, and my mouse is more ergonomic than my space bar.

Some Visual Novels to me are games. For example "Long live the Queen"
I wouldn't term that a VN at all, nit a game proper. It just has VN-style dialogue display. I suppose for me the cutoff between a VN with game elements and a game with VN elements is roughly Monstergirl Quest, where there are puzzle/battle elements and choices but it's really more of a façade; game elements laid on top of a novel story. Whereas something like LLtQ is a game with some VN aesthetic laid over the top.

Quote
The only reason I hesitate to give them the blanket qualification of game... is that it is a huge slap in the face of Novels.
I don't see how you figure. Calling a novel a game is wrong, but the one who looks bad from it is the one making the error, not the one being referred to erroneously.

It is far better in my mind that instead of making all Visual Novels games.

That we instead make All Visual Novels... Visual Novels. Their own thing unique and distinct then trying to cram it into another.
Yeah, our terminology is evolving less quickly than technological versatility does.

Wait what
It'll inevitably be shit, the tech is too early to have any degree of polish yet and they're pushing it on the tech gimmick and the IP tie-in. Still, it can encourage other people to do better.

Also, in case people want to actually talk about anime, here's the sales/pre-orders for this season as of now:

Grimgar has skyrocketed. Musaigen isn't as terribly low as it was for a while there, but it was higher too. Galk-chan is doing amazing for a short.

As far as Konosuba goes, you get a limited edition RPG game and a free novella written by the author bundled with the first BD volume. That's a lot more than the typical anime is offering, so probably it being a limited edition has something to do with strong pre-orders.

Since sales figures are god, let me remind you all just how awesome Is The Order A Rabbit? is. It's currently sitting at first place in the BluRay sales ... note that the top 5 of both BD and DVD sales are dominated by limited edition releases, regardless of whether they're actually the best shows. And the limited edition BluRays selling well doesn't translate into every volume in those series selling equally well, e.g. Working!!! Volume 7 Limited Edition is #3 in sales, but non-limited edition volumes of Working!!! did not dominate  the sales chart. A lot of people do only buy the limited edition ones for the freebies.

They should have bundled limited edition Sekko Boys marble busts with the anime if they wanted it to sell well.

I just watched the first episode of Oruchuban Ebichu (1999) expecting a cute kid-friendly show about a pet hamster, ala Chi's Sweet Home. I got the pet hamster bit, but everything else was 180o opposite to my expectations. Still it was interesting and different (NSFW!). Recommend going into it blind.

OE is literally one of my most favorite funny things. Sometimes I play the theme song and I still just feel utterly tickled by it, it's great.

Before people go WTF Japan, why is PSO2 - the anime that's least appreciated this season, is getting high ranks, it's because said blu-ray is also tied to some ingame goodies for the game proper. Here you go.

Rakugo is definitely the patrician anime of the season, but it's relatively niche in appeal, I think.

... which is exactly why it's coming third in the pre-orders. Whatever that niche is, it's bigger than almost all other series this season. Maybe that's because that "mainstream" stuff is completely saturated (there are a trillion series like Musagien no Phantom World), but a series like Rakugo doesn't come along so often.

Yeah, studios are trying to find new ways to make ends meet. It's kind of hard to know what the sales prices would be if they did nothing.

If you want something cute and cheerful you could consider Yuuki Yuuna wa Yuusha, a slice of life about the Hero Club finding homes for kittens and helping people in general.

I'd argue that this is a case where sales and overall popularity don't align, actually. Rakugo is more or less exclusive to people who are interested in a certain thing, and those people are also generally people of a certain age (and thus income) and who are more ready and able to buy what they want; a shounen title is more targets a much younger demographic, and one less able to go spending money on (fairly expensive) BDs. That said, it's true that we rarely get josei anime in the first place; that definitely contributes to it. But I don't think that we would see this many sales if it wasn't also a high quality product for the niche which it addresses.

Side note, I would attribute Musaigen's failure to its overall mediocrity rather than saturation. Being KyoAni means it's already far ahead of the pack just in market recognition alone, and there's not more than one KyoAni show per season so the saturation level is fine there. Meanwhile, the top two shows are fantasy world/game harem shows.
