I'm so frustrated with OPM's weekly release schedule, I want to know what happens now!... but I know I could just read the manga to find out, but I already feel too committed to switch mediums now, like I'd be ruining it for myself.

They abused the hell out of it in the frieza saga, actually. Goku spent all his time on that ship hitting himself with kamehamehas then recovering from his injuries, which is how he got something like 20 times as strong on it.
Did Goku even know about that ability when he was hitting himself with those?

I don't think Goku knew, but he wasn't just hitting himself for no reason; he was practicing his dodging and blocking, because Vegeta was insanely fast compared to Goku at that point in the story.

The answer to any questions about the mechanics of the Dragon Ball universe is "Did it look or sound cool in that scene? If yes, then that's how that particular thing worked at that particular time."

Yeah pretty much.

Heck Goku has been defeated plenty of times throughout the series and didn't receive some supreme power up.

At some point, it was revealed to Goku's friends about the Saiyan's ability to get stronger after near death. At that point, they realised that such power increases were indeed part of Goku's life. I can't remember when this was revealed to them or by whom but it definitely happened.

On Namek, Vegeta exploited the ability by having Krillin blow a hole through his chest and having Dende patch it up. It wasn't enough to kill Frieza but it was definitely a significant upgrade.

I know in the manga at least, Vegeta specifically tells Krillin to beat the shit out of him so that his Saiyan power thing will activate and make him powerful enough to defeat Frieza, so they seem to be aware of it. Of course, Toriyama forgets about things all the time and the plot elements of Dragon Ball are inconsistent as hell.

FAKE EDIT: Ninja'd.

He doesn't forget about it.

But as I said that power becomes either literal or figurative as the plot demands.

Watched "Ring Ni Kakero 1" a boxing anime that is not as good as Haijime but features something completely insane and unheard of!

Someone threw in the towel for legitimate reasons! BEFORE the fight was over... in fact before they started the round.

HOLY COW!!! I've watched a LOT of episodes of sports animes and if there are three rules
1) Refs are useless
2) Coaches are useless
3) Doctors are useless

And this was a doctor who was acting as a coach!... Mama mia it is a miracle!

---

Edit: NEVER FREEKEN MIND!!!

Apparently he just kicked the towel out of the ring... and he is going to stupidly continue. The doctor coach never throws it back in or anything.

So lucky that your in a sports anime and no one REALLY gets permanently injured if they are a main character (unless they start off with that injury)

What are you talking about? Toriyama himself has admittedly to completely forgetting about certain plot elements or characters as the series went forward.
He writes by the seat of his pants and doesn't crosscheck information.

Goodness how many unsurvivable attacks are people going to tank in Fairy tail?

Honestly story tellers, it hurts the impact if your unsurvivable attacks are not only consistently survivable... but are less effective then other big attacks.

Ehmm, the author of Fairly Tail has a problem with power escalation.  His first hero character; Haru, the Rave Master, got so powerful by mid-series that the author did everything in his power to just keep the character out of combat, which killed the series.  And since Fairly Tail is only his second big title, you have to expect some growing pains.

Honestly they aren't even all that particularly strong.

Just for some reason they always seem to cheat their way out of attacks that are impossible to survive... and oddly enough not even with reasonable explanations.

For example I thought they were going to survive the big bad's ultimate attack by saying they were teleported away (by the two characters who can teleport people away). Nope! apparently they survived because the big bad's ultimate attack can't even do what it is meant to do.

---

I will admit I think Bleach is just about the only anime which has a unsurvivable attack that remains unsurvivable from start to finish. It just basically never actually hits (I don't think it ever killed anyone important)

One Punch Man is confusing me.  The anime I mean, I've heard the manga is much better.

Anyway, the premise of One Punch Man doesn't work as a serious show for a similar reason that, for me, super man doesn't: he's invincible.  Like, we all know that the episode/plotline is going to end with Saitaman punching the bad guy.  Its in the name.

I'm pretty sure the boring invincibility was part of the joke.  The first few episodes were comedy gold, but now it... seems to be trying to be a serious action show?  Like... why?  Maybe when I'm finished the season the direction they're going will make more sense...
I saw a Youtube react/review of it, but yeah. They're just skipping the whole "struggle part" of regular animes where the protagonist will always or most of the time win, but gets beaten the shit out of before they do. OPM just beats the shit out of the opponents without having to struggle.

Also, OPM is drawn lazily for character, but overly powerful. Just like
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
It's the whole Hero theme Saitama fullfills so well to me. He's the hero they need, but not the one they want.

I'd say that Saitama is a parody of the very idea of fanmade 'original character' heroes. His appearance is plain and featureless, his outfit is just the bland and plain yellow suit with white cape. His only ability is punching people *really* hard.

It's a dumb show, but it's so likable because it clearly has so much understanding of it's subject matter behind it.

There is a reason that you can abbreviate the show name as OP-man (i.e. overpowered man).

I will admit I think Bleach is just about the only anime which has a unsurvivable attack that remains unsurvivable from start to finish. It just basically never actually hits (I don't think it ever killed anyone important)
IIRC Shiki Ryougi's hits guided by her eyes in Kara no Kyoukai are a truly unsurvivable attacks. Stronger or more resistant beings might have less points that she can see to hit, limiting her ability to use the move, (a very few super strong ones can actually reach the point of having no death points for her to attack at all, making her unable to use it), but if she can see a point and actually reach it to pull off the attack then it's guaranteed unsurvivable. Of course the real difficulty comes in the fact that she needs to:
1) Be able to see a point to attack
and
2) Be able to actually strike that point (which in a world of demigods and superhuman vampires is not necessarily an easy thing to do as only a slightly boosted human) :P.
That said it's definitely never a case of ever being "she used the move but he resisted it!" type of thing, it's always just either "she got the move off, he died", or "she can't successfully hit him/he doesn't have any points to hit so she can't use the move at all".

I've been checking out the 2016 Winter anime and some of them look really good, however what's with all the CGI? Did the pencil maker company going out of business really put that big of a strain on the industry? If it gets more CGI-oriented I am going to be very sad.
