So it's vaguely the manga equivalent to Perry Bible Fellowship?

I'm strongly reminded of Junji Ito, but it would seem it's another author with an extremely similar style.

Heh, that's great.

...

Anyway, watching more of Sound! Euphonium. I was sceptical at first but it's turning out to be a pretty good drama. The production quality is still ludicrously fantastic, too. Revised rank is somewhere around 2.5.

Goodness schools in Japan SUUUUUCK!!! if Anime is to believed.

And no I don't mean the obvious stuff they made up for drama. I mean the stuff that seems like it has some basis in reality:

Things school did in Anime
-No Language Services... Can't speak Japanese well sucks to be you.
-Schools have the ability to expel students for "public appearances"
-Schools have the ability to expel students for anything they find distasteful like being a bikini model
-Part time job? Expelled
-Tutoring services where are you?

Seriously where do they get off?

And no the whole relationship ban didn't make the list because as I said "Not obvious fake stuff they made up for drama" and the "no students can date one another" sounds made up, likewise the "fend for yourself" attitude could be attributed to it just being a "there are no adults". While the no public appearances has a basis in the stigma the Japanese have for public figures.

Some stuff I actually like. Retests, the fact that if you can do study from home they often just let you..

Yes, because Western shows so accurately depict schools and never invent or exaggerate anything for dramatic purposes.

Actually they really don't depict them almost ever.

They often just make the school aspect and the student aspect take place on different planets.

Japan actually makes use of the classroom in their shows with a lot more consistency. As well the whole "Schools are allowed to expel you for whatever reasons they want" part of anime seems... real.

I mean I know Universities can expel you in real life for any reason (but typically only for things that could land you in Jail... not for being say... a Porn Actor)

see also: ...almost anything ever made by disney channel

sure, i guess classes dont occur that much in adult stuff, but for children, a very distorted image of high school is pretty commonplace.
(not that i would know, since blegium is apparently rather different in not having terrible public education)

Yes because what horrible things did this thing show?

1) The school punished the students, who clearly earned detention, by making them work in the school (The horror!)
2) The teacher confiscated the student's cellphones (that they wouldn't stop using) then gave them back after class (the horror!)
3) Some students got out of detention for sports... Ohh no!
4) Teachers can have totally stupid rivalries based on nothing but stupidity (something I can say is 100% true of real life highschools)

What negative thing is this saying about Western Schools?

What the students do, do not reflect on the school.

1+2: Students should never be punished for any reason.
3: Sports are more important then consequences.
4: Welcome to the real world, it is petty. (Not really a negative.)

I was just giving it as an example of inaccurate depiction of a high school, not necessarily as a negative one.

also, i've never actually seen that movie. just the first thing that came to mind :v

for things i did see, stuff like ned's survival guide, there's probably much, much more.

3: Sports are more important then consequences.

And that is quite true of many highschools. Mind you the reasoning is kind of off though. Usually it is more that they wanted to punish you, not destroy you.

Also, it'll be rare to find a Disney Channel high school show that mentions potheads, or more serious drug users, or alcoholism, or teen pregnancy, or the insanely lacking sex education in some states, or genuinely incompetent teachers, or the false messages about college, or the lack of counselling/mental health services, or.....

The Japanese education system is definitely very strict.  I dunno about language services but they do put restrictions on what students can do.

Yeah, we're about to get to a good part :3

I hope they don't wrap the Sea King up in a single episode. There's way too much stuff going on.
