... checking to see if that was a different translation of Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer, I can tentatively see what you may mean by the characters, just from reading the description. "Mysterious" red-eyed, blue haired girl, rei in a mecha series? Something about that seems somehow Rei familiar. I'm not quite sure what REI it is :V

Hey, to be fair, the quiet pale-skinned short-haired bluenette isn't just a mecha character archetype any more.

And it seems like every writer who ever used it after Rei completely missed the point of Rei and just went for pushing the kuudere wallflower buttons.

To be honest even in the original source the whole trope kinda backfired and ended up turning itself into a (Warning: TVTropes) Unbuilt Trope. The original point of the source character was to show how unnatural the Otaku culture ideal of a "shy, obedient love interest" actually would be. Except instead of finding her way too weird to actually emphasize with, audiences fell in love with her journey towards emotion and her uniqueness.

It seems like the idea that Anno made Rei as a "screw you" to Otaku is from a creepypasta theory and is not backed up by any actual source. I tried to traced sources for this rumor and it comes up blank. Basically Anno quotes were taken out of context and twisted around into creepypastas. It's about as legit as the Rugrats theory.

And the idea that Anno was shocked that people sexualized Rei. That's directly contradicted by quotes from Anno, and from the fact that Gainax made a trilogy of NGE porn games themselves in the few years after the show aired.  The trilogy is called Neon Genesis Evangelion - Eva and Good Friends The Stripping Project! and it's a strip mahjong game (made by Gainax in house). You could also get the stripped girls pics from the game in a series of artbooks (also published directly by Gainax). The only reason I can see for Anno to be dismayed by fan-made Eva-porn is because it cut into the market for official eva porn.

I think it's someone else who disliked otaku who created the theory and dressed it up as "word of god" to give the criticism more teeth.

To paraphrase Anno's only quote on sexualized characters, is that sex sells, anything that gets popular gets porn (he invoked rule 34 basically), and it's been like that since the dawn of time. So Anno's position is that every generation throughout history is sex-obsessed and turns everything into smut. He didn't single out Otakus or modern culture.

The one line where he supposedly blasts otaku culture, if you look at the full quote, he's attacking mainstream Japanese culture, not Otaku. He blasts middle-aged businessmen for reading porn and manga on the train, and says (paraphrasing) "back in the day" i.e. during Imperial Japan, "men were men". He blames Japan's domination by the USA in the post-war period for a general lack of balls and manly men. Again, there's no actual mention of "Otaku culture" being to blame here, and he doesn't even single out otaku at all. He is directly blasting the post-war generation as to blame for Japan's social ills, not the youth culture.

Also if you look into how the character of Rei was designed, you see that Anno didn't really have that much influence. The art designer re-used a girl design from his own previous manga, and he liked a J-rock song called "the girl in white bandages", and that's where the image of Rei with white bandages came from. The hair color was originally brown, but they thought she looked too much like Asuka, and Anno asked for it to be changed. So the artist just inverted Asuka's orange hair which gave blue hair. So Anno had very little input into the overall character design.

Man, Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer really needs an anime, though. :/

-snip-
Thank you.

But yes, I was getting at how what made her special was the way she, despite being alien in two senses of the word, nevertheless resonated with people and displayed distinctly human behaviors. It's a good example of how to write a character who is for the most part incredibly passive and somewhat unnatural in a way that enhances the meaningfulness of their actions and character development rather than diminishing it.

More than that, though, I was commenting on how it sometimes seems like every other character that fills a similar role these days is apparently required to be petite with short blue hair.  ::)

Yeah, i get where you're coming from, I just wanted to nip the rumors in the bud as soon as they popped up. No offense meant, iam2roy :D

A bad example of the type you cite FD is Tabitha from Zero no Tsukaima. She's pretty one dimensional most of the time, but later on the author remembers to give her the standard tragic backstory.

Yin from Darker Than Black is a counter-example where the writer knew what the point was. Her role is similar to Rei, and is just as screwed up in it's own way.

Decided to watch Anohana because apparently people thought it was 3sad5me. It was, in fact, 3sad5me. The story on its own was more weird than sad, but it was presented well enough to be pretty emotional.

Now, if you haven't, watch Angel Beats. Only that and Anohana have made me cry.

Apparently Clannad is sad as well, and I tried to watch it... but it seems I ruined the experience for myself through my avid love of song mashups. I can't listen to any of Clannad's music without also mentally hearing gangsta rappers singing along to the beat. It makes it really hard to take it seriously.

*Cough*  I mean, I also recommend it.

What? I think a ton of people watched Angel Beats. It was very popular. Love or hate, virtually everyone had an opinion on that after it came out.  The big problem is that it got cut in half from the original planned length, so you have all the side stuff suddenly cut off without resolution, then the ending tacked on. Like who da fuck is TJ? He woulda got an arc in the full version, but you get basically nothing about him.

Because of the problems, they're actually making a Visual Novel version of Angel Beats. It's planned to be a monster game trilogy with no less than 19 main routes to play through. So a route for literally every character. After that comes out, it would be likely that it gets another anime adaptation of somewhere between 26-52 episodes. But for that, I'd wager a guess at it being a thing no sooner than 5 years or so. So you're looking at 10+ years from the first anime adaptation to a second one.

Oh. Not many of the people I know knew about Angel Beats without me telling them, which is why I reacted like that.

Ah cool. Well there was a lot of talk about it when it was newer so I thought more people knew about it. maybe the current generation aren't so up on anime 5+ years old?

In the news, Yowamushi Pedal season 3 announced.

I have to say this is probably my second favorite sports anime after Hajime no Ippo. I really wasn't expecting any more since the ending of season 2 was so epic I thought it was completely done. Best cycling anime ever (as far as being the only one I've watched). It's nice how people can have manly conversations while pedaling bikes in a sprint to the finish line at 200km/h.

Pretty impressive to be biking at 124 mph! Gerdamn those are pretty powerful legs for such a seemingly scrawny kid.

I talked about Nasu: Summer in Andalusia before, it was another professional biking anime I watched a couple weeks ago. It's just a movie with an OVA sequel, but I enjoyed it alot. You've probably seen it before, god your anime girth is formidable, but I thought I'd mention it.

Christ, that VN sounds like a monster to tackle. I can barely muster the fortitude to finish one route most of the time, and no amount of desire for more feels is going to change that.
