Welp. Cousinfuckin' 'ere we go.

I like the punch magic enough to ignore it, though. Punch magic is nice. Cast fist, etc. etc.

Cousin was concerning you? Well if I remember my biology... Biological inbreeding occurs within Parents, siblings, and child. Cousins are perfectly A-Ok!

Cousins is inbreeding lite.

That was just shorthand for the whole experience, neo. Both of these last two had fairly heavy siblingscrewing threads, too, or at least a very strong insistence on calling the person you're intending to vigorously bed your brother/sister.

But nah, close cousins are pretty iffy, too, iirc. Distant ones are pretty harmless, but first/second ones are more of relatively immediate concern. Still usually not a major concern so long as you're not insisting on keeping in the immediate family for multiple generations, but... still.

I know second cousins are 100% safe, but last I checked (and I could remember wrong) cousins are safe as well.

But yeah Frumple I understand it can be very... uncomfortable.

Actually, according to scientific research third cousins have more healthy children and grand-children than completely unrelated couples. In one study of the entirety of birth records for a whole country (Iceland) over two centuries, the third-cousin couples had an average of 6.6 grandchildren compared to the unrelated couples' 4.86 grandchildren. Which means they had almost 50% more offspring after two generations. How many kids your kids had is a better measure of reproductive quality.

This is probably due to related people being more genetically compatible with each other. Which is all about dominant genes, not recessive genes. My guess is that the negative outcomes from recessive genes fall off quicker than the positive benefits from compatible dominant genes do, so there's a "sweet spot" where the reproductive benefits outweigh the extra risk from recessives.

With first cousins having more problems than average, and third cousins being actually far more reproductively successful than normal, second cousins are probably just ... average.

http://io9.com/5863666/why-inbreeding-really-isnt-as-bad-as-you-think-it-is

BTW the authors of the study publically stated the results as "dislikable" and counterintuitive. This is usually a good sign, since you know they weren't rigging the study to prove this.

Isn't brother/sister stuff a thing in anime in general? I've run into it a couple times recently while looking for potential animes, even in a recommendation from a friend who usually stays away from the creepy stuff.

I'm still kind of baffled by how bad that recommendation was. I remember my friend's creepy friend was watching an OVA of this anime where all the female characters changed to bikinis and got in a fight with like, tentacles and strawberries and cream. I was reassured the regular anime is "not that bad" but that is a really fucking low standard. There was also a highly sexualized little girl character, but it was okay because she was actually an immortal being that was hundreds of years old. Riiiight.

edit: Also I don't know if I would draw conclusions about genetics from this study. I don't think number of kids is a good measure of reproductive quality in modern society - social pressures mess with that number in unintuitive ways. Rich people have more resources to raise children with (I think that's unarguably a favorable reproductive quality), but they are usually better educated, which tends to cause you to have fewer children. And they can afford better education for their kids, generally meaning they have fewer grandchildren.

Maybe first and second cousins that get married tend to be richer, and third cousins tend to be poorer. Then the genetic effects inbreeding has on your grandchildren would be obfuscated. I know the study is 19th-20th century Iceland so it might not fit my example specifically, but I think it's pretty likely they had some non-genetic pressures affecting fertility rates.

It definitely could be a genetic cause (or a mix of both) but I don't think the study has any evidence that points towards a specific mechanism.

You can't always tell with OVAs because they could be delivering something the main series does not (they're intended to appeal to the fans as an actual purchase, so they usually offer something different to the regular show, which could be "more boobs" in some cases, or excessive fanservice for a show which didn't actually have that much of that).

... continuing my comparison of Japan vs America's taste in manga, here's the most recent sales charts:

http://myanimelist.net/news/41240245
http://myanimelist.net/news/41180547

The Top three in America were Tokyo Ghoul, No Game No Life, and Akame Ga Kill. 2/3 of those are total boobfest harems, and all three were adapted into equally shit animes, plagued with terrible writing.

In comparison, the top 3 in Japan were Kimi ni Todoke, Uchuu Kyodai, and Kingdom. All well regarded series with excellent writing, and excellent anime adaptations.

Although if you look at light novel sales, everything flips around. The top selling light novels are all the dreck, and the majority are cheaply written novels that are aimed at 14 year old boys, basically they can have more "sexy" content but unlike a comic you won't get busted reading it. Since they're aimed at middle school kids, these sorts of light novels can get away with constantly repeating the same material in a way that wouldn't fly with older readers: 95% of the books are about some highschool kid who gets a demon power in his right eye/right hand, teams up with some magical/space/devil girls and battles against an evil conspiracy, in between hanging with his girls for funrtimes. Not needing artists actually makes a lower barrier to entry into the light novel market.

So, you have this odd situation in Japan where comic books are the bastion of good taste, and the real dreck is the print literature.

Not that weird since they still have print porn and don't have to make excuses to show more tits and ass. The written shit is from the talentless hacks that couldn't draw to save their life and couldn't make it in the comic/manga/doujin markets.

I didn't mind in maid-sama that She gets into trouble with some pervs, She calls out, He busts in to save the day and She'd already kicked their asses.

Sick of Naruto-syndrome where girls can get so strong and experienced but still get ass kicked by whichever new person on the block want to keep them hostage.

Gotta say, now that I've finished reading the translated bits of Red Dragon I'm really disappointed with the changes made from Red Dragon to Chaos Dragon so far. The first couple episodes added a bunch of stupid and unnecessary edge. Those weird looking over the top edgy villains at the start were anime original, and Ibuki's role in the original was using his ancestral magic to be the party's buff granter, not that weird edgy sacrifice thing he has (Also they might have killed off one of his later plotlines because of it). And the changes to the sequence of events changed the circumstances under which the party meets up, and wound up not making as much sense as a result. It being squished into one cour isn't doing it many favors either...

...also Urobutchi's genderswap kinda loses some of the charm of him being the Murderhobo incarnate who fails all his stealth rolls, though in exchange Ibuki and Swallow's discomfort around her makes up for it in hilarity :P

Durarara guy is pure gold though. Though the parts in Red Dragon he's in haven't been translated yet so I can't make a comparison at that point.

It is, it is. It's just... hard to describe. There's a difference between that and what I'm running into, though I'm having trouble putting it into words. Part of it is probably because, you know, these are punch magic series -- they're not exactly romcoms or porn light stuff, they're about casting fist until everyone falls down, so the whole incest angle feels even more off than normal. The rest of it may just be because of how straight it's being played... in a lot of the brother/sister stuff in other genres it's fairly obvious (and often incredibly blatant), that they're playing it off for titillation and teh smex. These are... not, really. They're more straight up "We serious incest romance sideplot now". Which, as I noted, I wasn't exactly expecting to find in my punch magic adventure romp.

Well, think about it, opera and mythology are chock full of stories like that, set to tragic / drama backstories. It turns up in Greek, Norse, Egyptian, Chinese etc mythology. It's in King Arthur, Shakespeare, Tolkien, Wagner (twincest is the entire point of Die Walküre). So as it's a common theme in myth, classic literature and drama, it's naturally going to become a common theme in stories that draw on myth for inspiration. Considering how widespread it is in the world's shared literature, maybe it's more of a question of why the West has just completely blotted out all stories of this type which used to be very prevalent, rather than saying the Japanese are odd because that sort of story crops up in their literature.

So, is the noteworthy thing that Japan makes use of one of the most common tropes from classic lit? Or is it noteworthy that this trope which was in almost everything up until 100 years ago, has been almost completely expunged from the possible space of literature for our entire culture?

Wikipedia:
Quote
In Icelandic folklore a common plot involves a brother and sister (illegally) conceiving a child. They subsequently escape justice by moving to a remote valley. There they proceed to have several more children. The man has some magical abilities which he uses to direct travelers to or away from the valley as he chooses. The siblings always have exactly one daughter but any number of sons. Eventually the magician allows a young man (usually searching for sheep) into the valley and asks him to marry the daughter and give himself and his sister a civilized burial upon their deaths. This is subsequently done.

Game: count the number of anime tropes in icelandic folklore. Here you have siscon/brocon, escape to a magical land, a regular joe with no traits except a special power which doesn't really advance the plot, and it segues into a reverse harem, then you have another generation of young bland dude, who's put into an arranged marriage with a magical loli.
