"The gods are fakes" has never been a joke in DBZ, nor has there ever been a "the gods are fake" thing ever. They never pretend to be more powerful than they are and no one's ever surprised when they're weaker than they are. They're treated with respect because they run the universe, not because they're powerful. Well....Beerus is an exception but he's no fake.

One of the most interesting things about the DBZ universe is that the afterlife is a bureaucracy. And not oppressive-government bureaucracy like Bleach, it's just ordinary shmucks doing an office job; the guy who sends people to Heaven or Hell even sits at a desk and wears a suit!

Speaking of, I'm about finished with DBZ, and I loved just about every minute of it. What's some things that are similar? I know that a lot of modern shounen anime follow the same formula, but I've tried quite a few and found them lacking; for a specific example, I dislike Bleach and Naruto because they take themselves too bloody seriously once the plot gets going. DBZ's always a bit goofy, even during the really tense battles for the fate of the Earth.

Another thing I dislike about Bleach is how quickly it gets so bloody complicated. In DBZ there's all sorts of transformations and stuff, but it's usually just "I look a bit different and now I'm even more powerful!", but in Bleach it's like "This is my bankai, and this is my bankai-do, and this is my zenkai-bankai-do, and I have this other thing I can do where it turns into a chain or something, and this is my bakuhatsufatsu tatsu technique, and this is my aljdbfkjerwin, the most powerful one of all until it turns out there's an even MORE powerful audflauerg!"

That's actually an aspect taken straight from Chinese mythology. ...well maybe not the suit.

You're not gonna find another anime like DBZ if that's what you're looking for. Anime has evolved in the last forty years and that kind of simplistic transformation just doesn't cut it any more, New DBZ excluded. Well....I guess One Piece has it with Luffy's whatever gears but I only know that from catching glimpses of it as my brother watches it with headphones. Personally, I don't like One Piece.

It's happening! The LOTGH novels are being translated! And Sentai Filmworks got the rights to bring over the anime!

There's no long-form action anime that doesn't get absurdly unnecessarily complicated? That kinda sucks. I remember having to take a time-out after watching some Bleach to remember all the new rules they introduced; that's when I realized I wasn't having fun watching the show anymore. Although SAO isn't quite the same beast as a long-form action anime, being broken up into more American-style seasons as opposed to epic 100+ episode sagas, the power-ups for the characters are usually kept to a new move or a new weapon, something along those lines. That's one of the things I like about SAO, all its flaws besides.

Kill la Kill wasn't that complicated, I don't think. But I'm pretty sure you've seen it already.

Terraformars isn't too complicated either, aside from regularly switching focus on characters with each episode, generally it's just a formula of "this is the main guy this episode, his powers are x, coming from this animal, watch him beat up giant bugpeople."

Oh wait, you're looking for long animes. hmm. Good luck with that then. I think JoJo fits that.

So I actually saw Kill la Kill on sale in a brick-and-mortar store a few days ago. As it turns out, it got an R18+ rating for "high impact sexual violence" or something like that. tbh it's kind of understandable.

High Impact Sexual Violence makes it sound like a giant porn star meteoring into the Earth with enough force to cause the extinction of the Dinosaurs.

Technically BDSM is sexual violence, and that doesn't necessarily imply rape.

E: I'm going to have to watch Kill la Kill now, solely because it made me type that sentence.

Hard science is like a sword, and soft science is like fear. You can use both to equally powerful results, but even if your opponent disbelieve your stabs, they will still die.

Technically the abuse in Familiar of Zero is 'sexual violence'... because the creators of it have 0 self-awareness :P
