You know... No matter how serious you try to be anime.

It will ALWAYS be silly when someone uses 666 as a password.

Man this is oddly good voice acting in "Control the money"

Like... they aren't even doing boring straight up "convey the words" voice acting... Like there is inflection there and everything.

"I'm just a spectator" said with a dripping stench of sarcasm.

Mind you this is nothing amazing... But I am so used to subpar voice acting in dubs that anything approaching good stands out now.

Guys. Guys. They are making stuff. Strange stuff.

They are making Death Note into musical.

I've always joked about the Robotech dub, that in Robotech they only liked Minmei's singing due to the fact that everyone's eardrums were ruptured by exposure to vacuum, rather than to her being a good singer.
Spoiler (click to show/hide)
And they rewrote the entire soundtrack a lot worse so that they didn't have to pay royalties.

Japanese Minmei (Mari Iijima) :

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=gknfiJm2ubk

American Minmei (Reba West):

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TF0UJTmNuaY

It doesn't really need pointing out, but Mari Iijima still has a singing career and Reba West does not.

Also the last song that plays during the big battle against the Zentradi fleet was changed from a sad song about how terrible war is to a upbeat song about their assured victory. I have no idea what they were thinking on that one.

American sensibilities at work, that.

"It's just like the end of Independence Day, right folks?"

I remember the end up Independence day it was something like...

"And Thus the day was saved thanks to the Apple Company!"

Macross is a lot more cynical than Robotech in general. For example they changed the plot point right at the start, where the alien battleship crashes into Earth. In Japanese, this triggers a world war as everyone scrambles to try and monopolize the new alien technology, whereas in English, everyone instantly on Earth instantly becomes best buddies since they realize aliens could be a theoretical threat (highly unrealistic given that in real life, you still get infighting/profiteering/looting in single countries in situations of total war vs another country)

Nah, that was just convenient product placement, like with the Coke can. The day was saved because the aliens in the mothership turned off their antivirus software and opened a sketchy email attachment without thinking.

*shrugs* Why not? I mean, hell. It's a musical. Those don't have to make sense. Or need a reason. They usually don't make sense, and have a reason that boils down to, "Because we fookin' could m8."

I have to admit Robotech is kind of interesting... because it is three different animes strung together it really does feel like three entirely different lifetimes.

It is probably one of the only animes in existence with that kind of epic storytelling (not "epic" as in "WHOA EPIC!")... Well to admit I say that but I can't think of a single other anime that tried to do that.

I will say in robotech's favor the books are surprisingly engaging. There's actually nearly two dozen of the things.
