Just finished watching the Zipang anime (a 2005 series in which the (fictional) Japanese Self Defense Force AEGIS destroyer Mirai is teleported to 1942 by a freak accident), which was both excellent (the execution of the core concept was flawless) and disappointing (due to the lack of resolution). As far as I can tell, the series overtook the manga (which continued for about 4 years after the show ended), which explains the lack of an ending. What it doesn't explain is why the series ended when it did - episode 23 provided a good endpoint* that would also have served well for a continuation if they'd made one, and the last three episodes open up a lot of plotlines that aren't resolved.

Episode 23 is when the Mirai is forced to sink the carrier USS Wasp with a Tomahawk missile in self-defense, underlying the uncomfortable fact that to survive in this era, they're not going to be able to avoid fighting and killing regardless of the JSDF's ideals, and that Americans are going to regard a Japanese warship as an enemy no matter what they do. This would be an excellent place to end a season, and a decent one to end a series on - they're forced to face their problem head on, and not getting the resolution of that is acceptable.

No more female characters to become invested in only for you to loathe the fact that you ever even attempted to when they trip and sprain their ankles requiring the male hero to save their butts.

Sounds heavenly.

Sometimes no representation is far superior to poor representation.

I will buy the BDs if that is what it takes. Trigger needs another anime original. Keep it 1-cour, though. Don't spread the budget too thin.

We'll see how Ninja Slayer X Animation turns out, their budget dropped like a stone apparently for this series but they got the guy from Inferno Cop running the show so lets see what they can do.

Ninja Slayer is basically Inferno Cop 2.0. Since they're deliberately going for minimal "animation", budget is naturally going to be lower than a fully animated show. Going off episode one, they probably wouldn't be able to utilize a bigger budget in a sensible way and still keep the same type of show. When people talk they just waggle a cardboard cut-out of the character on screen. You can't spend more bucks to make that look better.

This right here. Be aware that it's one of a handful of the more funny moments in a series that is largely filled with sadness and despair. (That said its worth watching for the special effects alone, there is a reason the joke name for it is Unlimited Budget Works). Also note that it is from the tv series, not the recent movie of the same name.

Yeah, and then the episode ends with the slaughter of the two nursemaids who have looked after and been Illya only pseudo-friends, and the next episode spends the whole time dwelling on Illya's tragic past before killing her. Real ball of sunshine those two episodes were.

I mean it's definitely nowhere near as bad as Fate/Zero, but it's not exactly a happy fun fest. Just the idea of having several different parties fighting over a single prize means that, if the characters are all done well, you will always have some groups that you like end up losing through the course of the series.

The limited animation is somewhat annoying, but I choose to look at it as intended, like with Nui Harime. Was kinda hilarious.
