And kill yourself in the process? :v Firing when zephyr particles are in the air would kill everyone, and committing suicide is out of character for normal human beings.
If I just saw
several waves of peeps get cut down, then yes, I'd think one of them would do it (hell, even lobbing a grenade at the edge of particle zone would've worked). But they never try anything beyond charging with more peeps with axes. They never (up till where I've watched at least) adapt their tactics to a technique that's used a lot all over beyond sending in more scrubs.
I have a lot of complaints with the show but the idea behind the axe marines isn't one of them. The axes are fine in a close quarters battle inside a ship because you're..well..really close to one another. Not to mention the marine armor is totally immune to laser fire unless you get shot in the joint. It can't even slow you down like a real bullet could. The trade being that the ceramic ablative doesn't protect very well against a stout blow from a sharp axe. They also have these: http://i22.photobucket.com/albums/b329/Cmd598/logh/logheps108-CentralAnimef43b6475a-1.jpg For even MORE protection against gunfire. It's not surprising that they use axes when everyone has armor that makes you immune to lasers but not to axes.
The idea you can have armor that fully defends against modern firearms but not an regular axe is ridiculous in and of itself. And indeed, if said armor is specifically made against their lazor weapons, then it's outright stupid they keep using those weapons, but I think that'd be kinda obvious (so didn't spell it all out previously).
At one point, you have some dudes in this super armor hiding behind a corner being suppressed by fire from some enemies. Commander comes up, they say "we can't deploy the zephyr stuff because they keep shooting". Commanders response: just charge them anyway, through a small corridor that's under constant fire, and cut them down. If that armor was so resistant, how could they be pinned? Hell, why use those particles anyways? And then lobbing a grenade still makes more sense!
Even today, in close quarters, you don't revert to axes, you use short smg's. And if they have armor that can withstand a decent bullet, then an axe strike wouldn't get through either. The only possible reason I could maybe see (and that's stretching it already) for not wanting to use decent firepower inside a ship is to prevent a hull breach (aka intentionally downgrading weapons) but that still doesn't justify using it on the planet.
Hell, even if you accept that their armor can defeat both their laser weapons and slugs of all kinds, then a regular axe getting through still wouldn't fly in an age with technology to make starships fly. Axe combat, even if you follow the show's logic, still makes no real sense.
Mostly I was offering to tell you about the series' explanation for the corridor and warping because it really doesn't make sense.
That as well is weird, but I'm sure they can technobabble their way out of it. But sure, try me.
