Of course I can never take conversations about PM entirely seriously just because I keep flashing back to that LP where the PC was Gendo Ikari...

Legal, maybe. Still more than a little squicky :/

Oh yeah, I'm not saying it's not squicky, but we can call something squicky while still sticking to known facts rather than exaggerating.

Meh. It's the same sort of issue as with relationships between military personnel from the same unit in which one individual has authority over the other, or between a professor and one of their students, or... &c. Just because it's not explicitly illegal doesn't mean it doesn't parallel other instances of conflict-of-interest. Arguably it's even worse, since it's much harder to get away from a parent that you are still dependent on.

That aside, it is sort of silly to argue about what's legal or not in a fictional fantasy-land. For all we know it'd be illegal for the appointed guardian of the destined-child-of-heaven-or-whatever-blah...&c. to get married to her because of the beliefs of the fantasy religion or whatever. Who knows. Still incredibly fucking creepy in any case.

I was mostly trying to be ironic to demonstrate how just completely wrong it feels for a parent to marry their child even when adopted.

For me at least, when you adopt a child... You go all the way.

Well except the game takes place in New York. Where you are part of an undercover Performance Theatre battle troop for two reasons:
1) It is the perfect cover
and
2) Because the girls can purify the hearts and minds of the people with their songs

And let me tell you... it was that alone that made me laugh. It is totally something an anime, but not generally speaking a game, would do.

Sakura Wars: So long, my Love

I've actually owned this game for years now, and I've loved the hell outta it. Best mix of Mecha JRPG + Visual Novel Dating Sim I've ever played.

I bought a physical copy from a Gamestop, and it actually comes in this big box, which contains the English PS2 game, plus the japanese version, the instructional guide, an autograph book containing the biographies and 'autographs' of all the characters, and a full size poster of the game's leading Heroine Gemini Sunrise.

I bought it for 40$ at a time in my life when I had virtually no income and less than a 100 dollars to my name, and I STILL think the value of that purchase was top-notch.

It's already a Gainax production! So weird to think that they dipped into video games for a bit, even though PM2 predates Evangelion by a couple of years.

It was probably one of the better moves the show could have made... because as good as the team is... They just aren't World level.

I still have faith in the show that the world stage is just as skilled and powerful now as it was back in the first season.

"For a bit?", nope lol, Gainax was still making Princess Maker games themselves up to 2007, so they kept churning them out for 16 years.

You can dress us as NGE or TTGL characters in #5 (In the PS2 version only though). There are 11 total Princess Maker games including main series and spin-offs. Only PM2 was translated, but the American publisher went bankrupt, then the beta version leaked out. After that, nobody has tried to adapt any more to the US market.

Gainax's Petite Princess Yucie is basically Princess Maker the Animation:
Quote
Petite Princess Yucie follows the adventures of country-girl Yucie as she is admitted by chance to the prestigious Princess Academy, where the daughters of royalty and nobles attend to learn magic, dance, etiquette, defense, art and music....The fragments take the form of Crystal Flowers and are scattered throughout the five worlds; Human, Demon, Heaven, Spirit, and Fairy.
Which is pretty much a Princess Maker game in anime form.

===

One theory you hear about Gainax is that Anno was horrified that otakus sexualized their nice, pure Rei from NGE. But consider the evidence:
Quote
Gainax has also produced a number of computer games, including a strip mahjong game featuring Evangelion characters
If there was any outrage it was "how dare fans sell NGE porn at Comiket, they're cutting into the sales of offical, Gainax produced NGE porn!"

Are there any fan-translations of the rest of the PM series? I rather liked 2.

... just the first, insofar as a quick check of RHN showed. You might be interested in Long Live the Queen, for something a bit more recent and/or english. Iirc, there's a handful of varying knockoffs of similar style (and differing degrees of outright lasciviousness) flapping around the internet, as well.

Yeah, Long Live the Queen is basically English PM minus some of the creepy stuff and with a good number of dumb ways to die. Not all of it, though. *cough*tentaclemonster*cough*

I don't know, Long Live the Queen is quite a different outcome of design despite the obvious similarities. You don't get the same type of experience from it, especially since there is no adventuring and the story is already decided. It's more of a "predict and react to upcoming tragedies" simulator than a life sim. Not to knock it.

"For a bit?", nope lol, Gainax was still making Princess Maker games themselves up to 2007, so they kept churning them out for 16 years.

I guess that was a bit of an incorrect phrase to use, admittedly. Hope continues to bloom that some gracious individual will translate more of the titles in the series, eventually.

I've been trying to trick people into watching that for years, with nary a success. Need to be more subtle and stealthy.
