Actually, I think that plays into a general trend among fanfiction: The better-written a work is, the less fanfiction there is about it. Or more accurately, works in which the author has comprehensively developed their worlds and characters to a even and high standard of depth and quality are less likely to push people to write fanfiction, in part because they leave satisfied with canon, and in part because canon leaves less room for adaption and originality; you can easily write (say) a Harry Potter, Naruto, or ZnT fic in a million different directions because the characters are shallow and the world is a vague shadow outside of places where it directly interacts with the protagonist.

Obviously there's also the effects of obscurity, but that's another matter. It also seems to be a trend for "stable" works which don't necessarily generate much in the way of fanfiction to be crossed over with less stable series.

But yes, basically, a big part of what gets the snowball rolling is the accumulation of badly written fics (most often fix-fics, occasionally with a SI or OC as the mechanism), which only really happens when the series has badly written conflicts that are obvious enough for other bad writers to loosely grasp. That's also why what fics you do see for things like Berserk, Claymore, Homeworld, Battletech, &c. tend to be pretty bad, they're the slight smudges of greasy badfic that managed to stick to a work with a smooth exterior, so to speak. Things like the aforementioned badly written series alongside things like Mass Effect can be visualized as having rough, craggy surfaces which tend to accumulate layers of detritus in the form of fanfictions. After that point, Sturgeon's Revelation basically guarantees that at a certain point there will be at least one good fic for a given work.

On a somewhat unrelated note, there's a Claymore/FSN fic newly up over on SB where our favorite dead fish from the latter ends up being hit with a plot device and sent to the former, and is promptly hired as a guard in that one big city by virtue of saying 'yes' after the recruitment pitch. No idea whether it'll turn out to be any good, but it seemed mildly relevant to this.

Dammit, the Grisaia adaptation is shaping up to be 13 episodes. For such a character driven narrative, that pace is way way too fast to adequately connect the viewer with the individual character arcs. I mean, episode 4 already bores through most of a character arc and shoots, in my opinion, one of the most impactful moments with little to no buildup. So mad right now

In all seriousness, how do studios adapt games with multiple, distinct routes into one season? That doesn't seem particularly possible unless they reset the narrative each time.

It's shaping up to be 2 episodes per girl, which in this case is chucking away roughly 5-6 hours of VN content, character build up, and romance aspects. It appears that this will be 8bit's 'interpretation' of how Yuuji was able to solve all the heroine's respective problems as it was said in meikyuu. It's still a horrifically condensed shell of a route that lacks heart.

I had the feels, but the VN connected so well that I was crying. What a shame

Somewhat amusingly, it's rather difficult to find that footage now (other than a 30s clip); most of what you'll run across is either the uncut ending or the meme image as a still background.

That's too bad. I could only recommend Grisaia to the most battle-hardened VN fans due to its...nature. But it also invoked feelings in myself as well.

While I'd agree with you that more well developed worlds and characters tend to lead to less fanfiction, I'd argue that there eventually reaches a point where the trend reverses. If an author or group of authors manage to push a world to the point where it's too deep for the protagonists to see all of it, especially if they touch upon what we would normally consider "background characters" (make each shopkeeper unique, maybe talk a bit about the various religions and what their prescribers do, etc.), that can open up similar "gaps" for fanfiction writers to exploit.

As an example (note here, this doesn't mean I'm for or against this show, nor is it anime, but if it does one thing well it's world building in this particular way) take the new My Little Pony show. In the show a common trend is to reveal only slim hints of things when the protagonists happen to encounter them. You might have a throwaway monster, character, or organization that the protagonists encounter once, and then never see again. However because this is coupled with a high degree of innovation and consistency with background, non-character related details, it leads to the idea of a very deep world much like reality. However because the only parts of said world that are actually revealed to the audience are the ones which the protagonists directly encounter, this creates those "gaps" fanfiction needs and allows for more fanfiction to be written (there are other factors as well, of course, this would just be one potential reason).

Another example of the same type of phenomenon might be found in the Star Trek fandom. The combination of a large number of present and unique, but unnamed and uncharacterized background characters, as well as the revelation of technologies and organizations that are explained in how they work in contact with the protagonists, but not in how they work within themselves, creates similar "gaps". Thus contributing somewhat to the large amount of Star Trek fanfiction.

FSN probably has a lot of fanfiction because you can easily change up the heroes or masters in the story and create your own grail war.  Also because it's really popular.

Naruto and Bleach were more awesome during the early arcs because you didn't know as much about anything outside.  The power of imagination.  (I really was a fan of em way back when.  Plus I had a stint with an RP-like community, despite the fact that I am really bad at RP.  The whole thing of people making themselves godlike mary sues/gary stus was frustrating.)

Heh, reminds me of that story about the guy who destroyed the fabric of that crappy Fist of the North Star-esque RP forum full of sues and drama by exploiting a specific set of circumstances with one of the weakest characters possible, real guile-hero/willpower stuff. Can't remember what it was called, though.
