and when it's aiming for less exclusive tropes you can get something pretty damned great even from things that are clearly intended to do nothing more than be really good at pushing a specific set of buttons (see: Azumanga Daioh, Death Note, &c.) to dispense certain types of enjoyment.
I don't know what you mean re: Death Note, that had a pretty clear premise: an arrogant draconian asshole receives a superpower that would allow him to create his perfect world, and a super-detective has to try and stop him.  There are flaws but it doesn't feel like the series started with someone saying "right, we want to appeal to these demographics so you have to include cat-girls, dog-girls and clumsy maids, give me our story by the end of the week"

The only thing about Deathnote that most people cared about in the end was that it had two cute boys chained together, so...
Yeah okay this one's mostly got the "Rivals try to outthink one another, the detective one trying to overcome the natural advantages that go with being on the offensive and the criminal aiming to destabilize society in accordance with his warped ideals, as their similarities are constantly emphasized and their intelligence is demonstrated through arbitrary deductions and/or schemes, and highlighted by the verisimilitude-crushing incompetence of their society" sort of vibe going. And one of them looks like this, if that's your thing.

I don't think I've spoiled anything past, like, episode 3ish, when it becomes clear that this is the relationship that will drive the plot.

“What are you doing?”, asked Minsky. “I am training a randomly wired neural net to play Tic-Tac-Toe” Sussman replied. “Why is the net wired randomly?”, asked Minsky. “I do not want it to have any preconceptions of how to play”, Sussman said.
Minsky then shut his eyes. “Why do you close your eyes?”, Sussman asked his teacher.
“So that the room will be empty.”
At that moment, Sussman was enlightened.

Nah, not episode 3-ish. I'm not disputing anything you wrote, but I've only seen up to episode 4 of Psycho-Pass and don't have a clue about any of those characters. There was a hint of rivalry storyline right at the start of episode 1, but it was more like a short monologue than anything, then up until the end of episode 4 it's all been about the girl in the new job and ONE of the dudes, who is the cop. I'm waiting for them to introduce the other dude. They hinted at some big bad organization right at the end of episode 4, but nothing's revealed about them yet.

Death Note written by Urobuchi is kindof a terrifying prospect.

If we're judging by that metric, I might as well discard ~95% of the content of any given medium because some element of it has been worsened by the creator(s) trying to appeal to one group or another. If you look hard enough you can find that sort of influence in damned near everything, including much of the Capital-L Literature that a certain arrogant class of academic enjoys vigorously analyzing.

Don't get me wrong -- HSotD and similar shows are terrible, mindless shit in a myriad of ways, but I prefer to look for the good in things rather than tossing them over my shoulder. Granted, I'll spend a hell of a lot less time with things that are 10% interesting concepts and 90% terrible, view-driven drivel, but if you dismiss everything that doesn't meet your arbitrarily high standard (At what point does something change from being good design to pandering, when the appeal stops scratching your particular hangups?), you'll quickly find that you're spending more time sneering than enjoying, at least in my experience.
Key phrase being "if you look hard enough." I tend to draw the line between pandering and appeal based on how mindless and instinctual the substance is- the same place as between pornography and art, roughly, or between ingredients and raw food. If there's something actually constructed there, with effort taken to turn it into a meaningful whole, it's likely not pandering. If it's just a tank of X, which it is hoped you're in need of because X is interesting on an animal level, it's likely pandering.

You're right that it's a continuum, not a hard line, but I'd say it's a worthwhile distinction. I'd also point out/agree that a work can certainly be appealing in some parts and pandering in others, but that doesn't help my issues with HSotD because every component I'm aware of looks like pandering. That might not be totally fair, but damned if it's not working for it.

Maybe this is just my old grudge against academic snobbery flaring up again, so it might be best to disregard.
Nah, it's a valid point. I wouldn't argue that HSotD "isn't art" for similar reasons, yet I'm doing the same thing for "not pandering." That can certainly be dangerous.

Anyhow, in case I was not sufficiently clear before: I am not saying not to judge things for being shitty. I'm say to judge them for the right reasons: because they're shitty, rather than because they incidentally were made shitty in the process of trying to hit target demographics.
I don't know. I'd agree that moving from disliking something to disliking that other people like it, or even disliking the people who like it, is generally unhealthy. But it seems like it should be fair to point out the reason for something being shitty, in those instances where said pandering seems like the culprit.

Mountain lolis are actually climbing something resembling mountains rather than largish hills this season. I'm hoping for them to tackle Everest by seasons end. Also, I noticed the sheer number of Japanese camping gear companies that sponsor this show. I guess it would be pretty educational if I cared about hiking / mountain climbing.

I don't really disagree with anything you said here, and it looks like we're making arguments that are about 1° out of alignment with each other, so I'm going to stop rambling about it now, heh. ^-^

There are many types of monsters that scare me: Monsters who cause troubles without showing themselves, monsters who abduct children, monsters who devour dreams, monsters who suck blood… and then, monsters who tell nothing but lies. Lying monsters are a real nuisance: They are much more cunning than others: They pose as humans even though they have no understanding of the human heart; they eat even though they’ve never experienced hunger; they study even though they have no interest in academics; they seek friendship even though they do not know how to love. If I were to encounter such monsters, I would likely be eaten by them… because in truth, I am that monster.

Who said that???

First to pm me gets a 48hr all access key to Crunchroll website, this gives you access to the most recent episode releases and a few other things. Spend the weekend watching some Anime...

Does anyone know a way for me to watch certain shows on Crunchyroll that are otherwise unavailable because of my location? Because I can watch most shows, except the ones I actually goddamn want to, which is ever so slightly very frustrating. It's admittedly probably more frustrating for those who can't watch at all, but... Yeah.

If they use the same technique as Netflix you could probably get by with some DNS trickery like mediahint or unblock-us. I'm in Norway and noticed I couldn't access Crunchyroll streams when I wasn't on my home internet, where I use unblock-us for DNS. Crunchyroll definitely have no problems with taking money from my norwegian cc.

Looks like the international publisher has changed for Attack on Titan, so Crunchyroll lost licensing for a few months. I started watching just a few days before they lost rights for the second half of the season and had to binge watch through it all. Full season should be back by december. Unless it's another case of Australia getting fucked over for digital media of course.
