 Actually they determined during their meeting with the kings and nobles, all players that respawned have lost some of their memories. Whether the memories were gained back from XP I do not remember but there was a realistic cost to dying in their world

I didn't mention that in part because it's a fairly major spoiler, and in part because they eventually conclude that it's actually not a severe risk for the average person; e.g. even after dozens of deaths people had only forgotten singular minor details, like IIRC the name of their cat or something. The assumption in-story as I recall was, after the initial panic, "Oh, so we'd probably have to die hundreds of times to start losing notable chunks of our old lives."

So it's a cost which, while real, is also functionally negligible -- and that's for the people who genuinely miss their lives. It fits with the rest of the show insofar as that the characters are remarkably willing to ignore the fact that they're not in their own world any more, though I think at least part of that is coming directly from the contrast with series like SAO which give it a distinct "trapped" vibe as opposed to "transported", making the story about "escape" rather than "discovery". I think that, ultimately, the latter is going to have longer term appeal, because the former mostly relies on cheap drama for its impact on the audience.

If you mean the the way SAO jumps around without a coherent story, no, it's not like that. It has a actual story and each episode picks up where the last one left. If you mean the actual pacing, it's okay normally. Sometimes it seems a bit fast to me, they really do just not have a lot of stuff like holy shit we are in a game now wtf. It just sorta barrels onward immediately into taking care of whatever the current issue is.

Kyubey says that a magical girl can only be killed if her soul gem is destroyed. A girl's heart can be smashed, she can lose all of her blood, but as long as the gem is okay she can heal.

So what happened to Mami? She got her head bit off, yes, but it didn't look like her gem got hit.

Does that mean she'll come back in some other character's moment of need? 
...probably not. That wouldn't be grimdark enough :/

Hell yes. They're pretty much self-contained arcs (season 1 is two arcs) detailing the earlier generations of the Joestar family. You should watch them before getting too far into Stardust Crusaders.

And that OP for Battle Tendency ... all the OPs are good, but BT is a level of "fabulous" above all else.

As for more airing anime:

Yami Shibai - Japanese Ghost Stories. Everyone should check this one out (it's on season 2 now). Really short ghost stories. Not all of them succeed, but enough do to freak the hell out of you in ~3.5 minutes of runtime per episode, which is quite an achievement.

Sabagebu is pretty decent, it's a Slice of Life / school / cute girls show, but it's also hella violent, constantly breaks the 4th wall, and is very genre-savvy: it constantly sets up relevent genre tropes only to subvert them. It basically has 2-3 mini-stories per episode, similar to Squid Girl or something. Not really an "enlightening" anime, but I'm enjoying it for some laughs.

Majimoji Rurumo is about this witch Rurumo who is very cute and clumsy and doesn't know how to deal with the human world. She is really adorable. Unfortunately she's basically a side-character in her own show, which is a cliched harem anime. The scenes with just her are great, but they're rare and most of the time they have to focus on the "main character" who is the run of the mill pervert highschool student. This coulda been another "Squid Girl" if it just focused on Rurumo trying to navigate modern life, or had a female character as her foil. rather than a harem MC's cliched problems 90% of the time.

I was having a friend watch log horizon and he got pretty irritated at some of the slower episodes. Probably should keep in mind the show isn't very action oriented and most of the time it's just people talking.

As a whole the thing is quite well paced, though. Obviously if your coming from a hundred+ shonen almost anything would seem fast paced in comparison.
