i get the impresion i should have put off watching pullea magi madoka magica untill i had seen a few normal magical girl anime so that i would have expectations to be subverted

so i ask you bay 12 whats a good cross section of magical girl anime that will allow me to get a good feel for the genre

Cutey Honey -- pretty much the Ur-example, inspired a good chunk of the genre.
Sailor Moon -- the second major tropesetter, typified the more shoujo-esque qualities, making 'magical girls' as opposed to 'magical girl warriors' akin to Cutey Honey.
CardCaptor Sakura -- another defining example of the lighter, more monster-of-the-week/shoujo flavor of mahou shoujo.
PreCure -- if you can stand it, mahou shoujo played straight. Too sugary for my tastes.
Magical Girl Lyrical Nanoha -- if you've heard a meme about befriending or Gundams shaped like magical girls, this is where it came from. Starts off as a typical monster-of-the-week show, goes off the rails about six episodes in, and by the third season is a mil-SF drama.

That's a roughly sketched list of some of the most commonly named series.

I ought to check out some of those pyschological shows as well. It's been a while since I actually saw a good horror/pychological anime that wasn't just "bluhhh gore, bluhhh wangst".

Horror?
Might I suggest...

Higurashi no Naku Koro ni

Another -> this one I really like

Umineko no Naku Koro ni

And uh...well shit. Horror isn't that well represented in anime

If your after something psychological might I suggest seriel experiments lain I assume that's the sort of thing your talking about I might be misunderstanding the genre though my experience with anime is limited to Seriel experiments lain, pullea magi madoka magica, a few vague memorys of dragon ball z mostly the episode where that kid gets in the exhibition match and punches the Guy into a wall because he tried to convince the kid to just give him a few soft attacks for the crowed also the final moment of the final episode of the final series also a very vague memory of a green enemy that wasent picalo I think it was boo but not in his baby form and vague memorys of sailor moon

Monster might hit the right notes for psychological horror.

Did anyone else hate Elfen Lied?

*Raises hand.*
Not gonna lie, I laughed through most of that series from its sheer fourth-wall-breaking awfulness. Everyone was either sympathy bait, a Machiavellian schemer, or both at the same time. The entire show felt like it could be summed up as "Tropes, but with violence!" Having sympathy bait characters is fine; but they can't ALL be sympathy bait characters, nor should they be so overt about it that you can predict their backstories just by thinking "What's the worst possible thing that could happen to this person?" Then none of them actually had any character aside from said sympathy-bait backstories. So the entire thing ended up along the lines of "Here's a cardboard box you should feel sorry for. Now watch as we stomp on this cardboard box. Are you sad now?"

You'll love Gokukoku no Brynhildr, which is like Elfen Lied all over again. It's a total rip-off written by the same person.

Almost as gory, but no nudity and more "Sempai looked at my oppai, now I can never get married"

Hmmm, interesting.  I'll admit that I actually forgot that particular Gundam, so it took me a bit of searching.
...
Wait, "Colonies' Survivor."  As in, multiple colonies?  Am I now a testament to the Dirty Pair Rule or something?

Another good reason to watch Ippo as opposed to other action shows is that it...

Doesn't waste time... On the rare occasion a single fight lasts more then a single episode worth (most fights take 1 whole episode worth... but are usually half of two episodes) it is because the fight could use more then one episode.

It doesn't just drag on fights to infinity... (which is right now what is wearing me out with Fairy Tale... which isn't, by far, the worst show in terms of doing it)
