Chaika the Coffin Princess seems interesting. On episode 3 so far, hasn't lost my interest yet.

First episode was kinda eh, I spent most of the episode questioning what the heck was going on, but by the second episode it seems to have settled down and got all the vague first episode foreshadowing syndrome over with. The first episode did have a blood thirsty unicorn chasing an anime girl with gun magic who's carrying a huge coffin around, so it's got that going for it.

All in all, not bad. Not super amazing grade A "Attack on Kill la No Game No Mahouka" level stuff, but not terrible either.

It's got a hardcore group of fans out there, there was mega-hype when it first aired, though it's shifting towards the haters bit by bit as more people check it out who weren't fans of the novels / manga.

Mahouka fans don't take criticism of the series well, worse than SAO fans even. And this even extends to the authors. SAO's author has publicly acknowledged in interviews that the series has a lot of flaws, so he's at least aware about it, acknowledges issues and can therefore grow as a writer, whereas I heard that Mahouka's author is a completely shithead in interviews if anyone dares note any problems with his work: i.e. the author is every bit as insecure and immature as the work suggests.

The author's terrible behavior in interviews should put the nail in the coffin of the "this must be a parody" line of thought, and his ultra-defensiveness if anyone criticizes Tatsuya (who shares the same initials as the author), who is pretty much synonymous with the series, makes it abundantly clear that Tatsuya is an author's proxy / gary-stu / self-insert / fantasy wank character.

This is the only place I really pay attention to for anime news, and the consensus here seems to be that it's crap. The idea that people actually seem to like it is a strange one to me.

I get the feeling that if I watch Mahouka, it's going to be a lot like Attack on Titan. In that I'm being told it's the best/worst anime ever and that's the feeling I'm getting from the hype/hatred of it. But when I actually sit down to watch it, it's going to be good/bad. Not as good/bad as everyone says it is, but still good/bad. I mean, it'll be nothing to rave/froth at the mouth about, but it'll be there for shits and giggles.
