What kind of "magic" are you looking for exactly? Supernatural powers? Monsters? Magical girls? Robe and wizard hat?

The robe and wizard hat kind. You know,the kind you find in RPGs, and the like.

Tough call. Most of those goes into shonen territory.

Not anime but the manga of Maoyuu Maou Yuusha is literally the manga version of that kind of RPG. There are several versions so I forgot which was the best one.

On a side note, any recommendations for a good magic-based anime? By that, I mean magic like Fairy Tail and such. Except less Shounen-y, and more plot-based.

I can recommend Hataraky Maou-Sama! Not really shounen, and so far there's only the one season.

Log Horizon. Only 1st season though.

Negima but its a shonen disguised as a harem comedy. Only the manga is worth it though.

Chrono Crusade but its more of holy magic and demons I think.

There's another I can't remember but it was eastern magic.

Well, if you like psychological horror there's Another. If you like 90's action movies there's Black Lagoon and Black Lagoon: The Second Barrage. One Piece is pretty fun, but it takes a little while to get going.

Fullmetal Alchemist is good as well.

Witchcraft Works which is a literal gender flip of the classic Knight and Princess stories. I think the guy was a princess in a past life or something.

Magi. It kinda starts out as Arabian Nights kind of story. Not sure how far the anime got but it eventually involved Romans, ancient China and wizards.

The first one that comes to mind is Record of Lodoss War, which is literally based on a D&D campaign.
It might be a bit... serious compared to what you are looking for, though. If you do, watch the original OVAs instead of the remake.
