Anyway, regarding Mahouka. This is a poor idea, but:

Psion- Similar to pushions, they are particles from parapsychological phenomena such as magic.

Mordern magic makes use of these psion.

Magicians channel their psion into the CAD-

The digitized magic circle

[Activation Sequence] gets output by the CAD.

Using the body as a medium, the activation sequence gets absorbed by the magician.

The magician then sends that into his own mental system, [Magic operation zone], which only magicians possess.

The [spell] then gets assembled and magic gets activated.

Technobabble identified. Parsing...


"Parapsychological." Alright, that's a good one. The "para" prefix can basically mean anything related to the word, so "parapsychological," assuming various things about the translation, means that magic is in some way deeper than or parallel to mental processes.

In other words, magic is done with your mind or the thing under/beyond/above/to the left of your mind.

Okay, so the CAD. They explained earlier that the CAD is just a modern magic circle or equivalent; "digitized magic circle" is pretty much literally that.

Now we get to the good stuff. The activation sequence is output by the CAD. The magician absorbs the activation sequence using their body as a medium... so I guess flesh is conductive to activation sequences. The activation sequence is then sent into the "magic operation zone," apparently located somewhere in the user's "mental system." This zone then "assembles" and activates the spell.


So... what this is saying is that to use magic, a magician:

-Channels magic particles into their magic doohicky
-Magic doohicky outputs an activation sequence when infused with particles
-Caster reabsorbs the activation sequence through their meat, then shunts it to their brain or magical brain equivalency area, where it's assembled and happens

Or put simply, magic tools are poorly explained mirrors.

Crap, forgot to ask. Is the manga just as bad as the anime? Apparently there's like nine of them for some reason and the "main" one looks pretty awful, but it's hard to tell this early.

It's from a light novel originally. I've only checked out the anime version but crapness pervades the writing at all levels from what I've seen.

The blurb from the manga reads:

Tatsuya, a defective elder brother low achiever.
Miyuki, a perfect, flawless younger sister high achiever.
After both siblings entered a Magic High School,
The stage of daily turbulence was unveiled ---.

In the series however, the sister is basically a useless person who scored really high on the test, and the brother is this omniscient omnipotent demigod hated by most men, loved by all women. It's a real cop out flaw too. He can do everything in the universe perfectly except some abstract magic puzzle that happens to be the entrance requirement. It's like "i'm a god. I can do anything perfectly. Except Jenga. I can't play Jenga to save my life". "the entrance exam is playing Jenga" "Oh. Shit."

... and then his Jenga-playing skills are never relevant to the plot ever again.

That's really not in line with the synopsis of the series this guy was supposed to be writing. So it's like he really wanted to do this story about a 15 year old superman, but pitched the above synopsis and had to roll with it, then came up with every cop out plot device he could think of that this "underachiever" is basically the Supreme Being.

Then there is the series views on discrimination, which are the most right-wing I've seen in just about any media. The course-2 hero points out "i really shouldn't have been in this class" and his sister protests the "unfair" nature of the entrance exam because it didn't properly measure he brother's skills - i.e. it's not that it's inherently bad to discriminate against low-scorers, it's just the scoring system was unfair because Mr Genius didn't get to be in the A-class. Just retest my brother alright! And then you're free to keep discriminating against those *actual* loser shitbags. Who apparently deserve the treatment because they didn't score well enough on my "new improved and accurate" discrimination test.
 
Then, the other low-scorers who protest discrimination find not an ally in the MC, but a bunch of bland right-wing talking points like how the difference in median wage between two groups is totally fair, because a free system promotes the talented to rise to their deserved place. And we also get sneak attacks at Affirmative Action (the underclass asking for equal treatment in the show is immediately referred to as "a new form of discrimination"). These are just a couple of examples.

The best theory is that the writer has very little social contact outside a small group of similar middle-class types and this is the scope of his understanding of how the world works.

Yeah, so this stuff is deeply seated in the series and I doubt any of this wasn't in the novel and mangas.

I'm liking Baccano!, it is basically a 20 *tagonist pile-up. Everyone is either sure they're the villain, or sure they're the hero, and watching all of them collide is pretty great. The nonlinearity takes some getting used to but works fairly well once you do.
