I haven't seen it and don't intend to, so I can't really comment on the specifics. But, an awful lot of this sounds like "it sucks in that manner because of this excuse or reference or narrative purpose" or "yes but it gets better in the second season." Is this one of those things where if you like the genre/premise enough the rest won't bother you, and if you don't there's no particular saving grace?

It is kind of a "Well this Drama didn't make me laugh, what a shit show." or "Why is this ecchi so pandering?" kind of complaint.
The author set out to do certain things, which he did well. The plot was never supposed to be a well written masterpiece, the MC much more than a parody, the sidekick having some sort of big role etc.

It's alright to dislike it, but I gave him some of my thoughts as to why it is the way it is.
Also the second season isn't supposed to make it up for the first one, but I said it would put more focus on the parts that matter to him.
I liked both, but the second one more. Guess the author realized that having the same episodic approach for another season, just adding more and more conquests might turn out tedious and saw that the show had some unrealized potential.

In a streak of boredom today, I (finally) caught the first four episodes of Attack on Titan.

It's alot better than I expected it to be and I hope it stays that way.

I recently re-watched the first season with a few friends (one was being introduced to the series, two were veterans like me), and maybe I and every single one of them is crazy but none of us have been bothered by any sort of pacing issues or overdone monologuing, things that people have recently been complaining about..

Is it because none of us have read the manga? I think one of us has, actually, but if he did he didn't say anything either. The only thing that got to me is that I get a bit frustrated while watching them fight sometimes, but I shake it off pretty quick and then blame it on myself getting overly invested and then immediately congratulate the show on making me care at all what happens to the characters.

I get what you're trying to say, where there's a difference between my expectations and the creator's authorial intent, and that just creates the friction naturally.

I mean, my soured opinion feels justified regardless of the creator's intent, but I get what you're saying.

It is justified.
I just though I'd try putting the whole thing into perspective as somebody who liked the show, saw both seasons, read a bit through the manga (each chapter has some notes from the author about what sort of character he tried to portray, the connection to his youth, what role it is supposed to play in the overall story etc.) and came across some of the authros statements during an interview.

People just like to bitch about what is popular, Attack on Titan is perfectly fine compared to the majority of anime.
Everyone should congratulate the author on making a dark risky series that isn't afraid of upsetting people, and has a unique well thought out setting into something this popular. It's really a freak occurrence.

Ohh I heard news that made me so glad.

The one thing that always REALLY bugged me about Hitman Reborn was how Chrom who's entire story arc was about her learning to stand on her own two feet and support her team... gets thrown under the bus way later.

Then someone told me the reason this happens is because the anime actually doesn't finish the manga and in the manga her story arc actually continued.

So yay! that makes me so happy!
