Difference between light novel and manga?

A light novel is a novel while a manga is a comic book.

Difference between light novel and manga?

Words vs pictures. Light novel is just a short low-cost novel aimed at teens/young adult market, that's released in serial volumes, similar to novellas or the old-style pulp fiction novels they used to have in the USA.

Basically, a light novel is a written book with about the same number of pages and cost as a manga volume. Plus they're usually illustrated with occasional full-page manga-style artwork.

They also use much simpler vocabulary. If you read a serious japanese novel, you're likely as not to need a dictionary to get through it, even if you are japanese, simply because the word used in it are likely well outside your normal day to day experience, and some of them will be kanji, which can't be pronounced unless you recognize them and know what they mean. That's what happens when you have four alphabets.

Something I almost missed in Mahouka's setting - apparently there are multiple magical high schools nearby. I really lolled on finding this out. It makes the whole two tier discrimination system within a single school even harder to believe. Does every school have Blooms and Weeds at each other's throats and learning different material? why wouldn't you just create a system with two separate types of school in the first place?
