The transformers themselves are pretty damn bizarre. In any other setting they'd be considered weird shapeshifters.

They can take the form of vehicles or dinosaurs (during that one really odd phase)

WE ARE THE TRANSFORMERS. YOUR BIOLOGICAL AND TECHNOLOGICAL DISTINCTIVENESS WILL BE ASSIMILATED. RESISTANCE IS FUTILE.

Also does anyone other then me think that the Transformers are not the best heroes to make fight existential horrors?

They once fought a hate plague, I'm sure they could manage a horror or two.

And then theres the Swarm from the Generation 2 comics, and the actual lovecraft elder gods appeared in a couple side story comics.

Okay. Considering my love of the Transformers is so high that I actually started doodling various ways the Transformers could impact Evangelion and throwing that aside.

The best crossover with the Transformers that I have ever read was with Warhammer 40K. Though that was a fanfiction, it was pretty awesome. Honestly, I want to see this happen so that I can see all of it in it's glory.

Yes, if you please. I want to read about Optimus Prime ripping a bloodthirster in half.

I am sorry, but the fic is just an unreadable hot mess. Author's skills in language are lacking as well.

I wonder if there's a name for that threshold where the lack of quality overcomes the attractiveness of the abstract idea.

Such a pity the group translating it disbanded recently. The group who picked it up now is such worse in quality compared to them.

The "Sergei Lukyanenko" threshold. Named after his popular russian urban fantasy series, the "Night Watch", where a very cool idea is choked under heaps of poor execution and shallow characters. Or, alternatively, the "Noboru Yamaguchi" threshold, I believe we discussed his work as an example of your concept above at length.

Meh, in the lore that is pretty much what Unicron is.

Yet when he is on the screen he is just a planet sized transformer who tends to be beaten in increasingly embarrassing ways. Mostly by the power of friendship.
