Is anyone watching Nagi No Asukara? Season one is airing right now, the art is some of the best I've ever seen.

So I finally got around to checking out Tengen Toppen Gurren Lagann. Pretty cool, I like it. Interesting concept with the whole "living underground" people, despite how the first episode didn't really explain why. I guess it's because the surface is filled with angry mecha, from the looks of it.

The opening song sounds hella familiar, though I can't recall where I first heard it from exactly. Probably some random youtube video.

Anyway, I can see the Gainax in it. Art style, "fueled by awesome" concepts, scantily clad perfectly-figured females brandishing oversized weaponry and armed with maximum jiggle, total Gainax. I also think I recognize a couple voice actors from Kill la Kill too.

But Gainaxing is too absurd and/or awesome (depending on how over-the-top it is) to not make snide jokes about it. Gainaxing gainaxes too hard to not gainax about how gainax the way gainaxing gainaxes.

I'm disappointed!

Zaku Amazing was cool. Kampfer Amazing was cool. Amazing Exia is DUMB. Not only is the suit completely uninteresting, but I don't see how it fits in with Zaku and Kampfer. I thought they were doing the whole char clone/zeon rival type deal. I feel like they're just trying to appeal to what's popular with this. (Just like SDGO with its fucking 20 variations of Exia and 00.) I was about to make a cynical joke about them dragging Strike Freedom into the mix as well, but Sei's Gundam is already a variation of the Strike. Argh!

Maybe they'll surprise me and bring back his Zaku or Kampfer for the finale, but I highly doubt it. At least we got a cool fight out of each of them. Now all I have to look forward to is GN Sword vs. Build Knuckle wankery. :< Hope I end up being wrong.

Also those cameos in the preview are amazing. I hope Bernie's there..

I have to admit... What I liked about Menjin the most was the fact that while everyone else had flashy attacks and gimmicks for their gundams and fighting style... Menjin did all his battles in a very technical way with no tricks. It made me feel his skill as a Gunpla battler and I wanted to see more battles of him taking on the more flashier machines. He really did feel like Char who fought the Gundam to a standstill using a far inferior machine.

Which of course will never happen now that we have the Exia. It is a cool gundam, but it is just another "really powerful gundam that has a super charge system". One of my theories of why they changed his machine is because they realized his old ones couldn't realistically win because they had no really flashy attacks.

Outside of that it was a good episode, albeit one who would have been all the more profound had they highlighted any of this in advance

Which is actually becoming an odd pattern... episodes that COULD have been really powerful episodes if they didn't feel like 1 episode filler episodes

Also yeah lets not pretend here we ALL know the last battle is going to come down to the Build Knuckle versus the opponent's fists

Meh it's more likely the decision was  100% just to sell merchandise  by squeezing in as many designs as possible combined with Exia's hueg popularity at the moment. Yuuki's good enough that I could see him potentially winning with any machine he had (in a world that the heroes weren't fated to win anyways). After all that is always the primary motive when Sunrise and Bandai are involved . Its gonna get turned into the Dark Matter Exia in a couple episodes (and possibly highjacked by the chairman depending on how the plot goes), and I wouldn't be surprised if the Amazing Exia becomes a P-Hobby Shop exclusive, or a magazine conversion kit.

Personally I've been kinda weirded out since the Dark Matter doesn't match Yuuki's style, but I wouldn't be surprised if it gets hijacked or something, and I'm just gonna be happy so long as we're getting more flamenco

Sooo... BTW who do you think the Crossbone Gundam Kai HGBF they've advertising is gonna belong to? The current most popular theories are Reiji, Mao, or even something Yuuki throws together at the last moment because of whatever happens with the Dark Matter, since the ads have implied Crossbone Gundam Kai is only a placeholder name

It's probably just a one-season deal, though have to see how the ending works out. The artwork is very nice indeed, typical of PA Works; Hanasaku Iroha is by the same production house and writer.

Yeah, I can't see it being more than one season. Neither the characters nor the story are particularly good.
