Might it be one of those films that's better when muted and accompanied by music? You could probably imagine a better plot as it goes along.

Yeah!  I've got Garden of Words coming from the library soon, too.

I don't think this one even had two intertwining protagonists separated by a difference, unless you mean that they came from different worlds... because that seems very superficial in this case, an "in name only" thing, and wasn't at all the topic under discussion in the movie >_>

God, beautiful animation, but so little sense
It sorta did, once you seen Garden of Words or if you haven't yet 5cm Per Second you will see the similarities of all of the plots.

The only one I haven't actually seen is "Children who chase lost voices". I have it here though, in the queue.

I vaguely remember somewhere hearing it was more "mainstream" than his other ones, with a main quest, action, or whatever. It could be his attempt to crossover into the mainstream, which didn't pan out.

Garden of Words is back to form, though.

Well, to be honest, that wouldn't be the focus of a Makoto Shinkai movie. He looks at how people interrelate, or fail to relate, and isn't terribly interested in world-building, techno-jargon and "applied phlebotinum". You'll get just enough setting to outline the relationships between the main characters. I have yet to see a Makoto Shinkai movie that had an actual antagonist, only a vague conception of "the enemy".

Ah... this one was very settings-based, and yes, there was no real antagonist, but at the same time... I have to say that the characters weren't very delicately drawn.  It was a mess.  Very different writing from, for example, Voices from a Distant Star.

I'm going to chalk it up to an experiment and see how I like Garden of Words :]

So I have been on an anime kick recently, and I have watched a few shows.

Shows I liked:

Cowboy Bebop (I watched this a long time ago, still one of my favorites)
Attack on Titans (Of course)
Blue Exorcist
Kill la Kill
Arpeggio of the blue steel (I didn't think I would like this show, but I did... Not what I expected from the opening, at all.)
Another
Legend of the Legendary Heroes
Heroic Age
Bubblegum Crisis (Good for an old Anime, had character development and actual female leads (Who didn't suddenly need rescuing in the end!  Yay!)
Stuff you might find worth a look:

Redline (anime movie)
Jin Roh - the wolf brigade (movie)
Macross Zero
Gundam 0080 War in the Pocket
Inferno Cop
Detroit Metal City
Death Note
Legend of the Galactic heroes
Shinsekai Yori
Ergo Proxy
Ghost in the shell movie + Stand-alone Complex tv series
Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood
Hellsing: Ultimate
Baccano! + Durarara!
Steins;Gate
Shikabane Hime
Higurashi no naku koro ni
Monster
Hataraku Maou-sama!
Girls und Panzer (best cute girl WWII tank warfare anime ever)
Hajime no Ippo (3rd or 4th or whatever season airing now)
Magi: The Labyrinth of Magic (2nd season airing now)
Log Horizon (airing now)
Kuroko's Basketball (2nd season airing now)

I was listening to some Daft Punk some time ago, and after hearing 'One More Time', I recalled there being a music video for it. I didn't know it was a full-on AMV/OAV.

Worth a watch (and maybe with the influence of a few other things):
Interstella 5555: The 5tory of the 5ecret 5tar 5ystem

No dubs or subs, just music and action.

Just watched it last night. It's in the correct order. I just love the guitar in Aerodynamic.

i5555 Saturdays was the main reason I watched Toonami Aftermath. (Most of the remaining reason was Hajime no Ippo.)

You should give Hourou Musuko a look, Vector, if you haven't seen it, and don't mind a fairly slow-paced drama.

Oh!  I read the first book of that manga.  Thanks, I might just try it out!
