What exactly is Gurren Lagann?

A show about dudes piloting giant robots that takes all the shonen and mecha tropes and pumps the testosterone level and general insanity over 9000, with lots of epic battles, epic monologues and craziness. It starts small, but every time you think the epicness has peaked, they rachet it up another order of magnitude.

Goes from "ok..." to "that's kinda epic" to "that's ridiculously epic!"

Speaking of the opening, the Chairman and co's arsenal looks mighty impressive. Fromm the looks of things those sillouettes were the Perfect Zeong, SD Command Gundam, Master Gundam, F91, what's either a Full Armor Gundam or a Perfect Gundam, the recently announced Dark Matter Exia and Miss Sazabi, and ironically enough the Beginning Gundam. Gunpla battle has come full circle .

Also Ral became even more awesome, and I freaking called it last week that Neils would use Fuunsaiki for the race.

So there's this visual novel called, amazingly enough, don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story. It's generally pretty nice, and seeing as it's originally written in English, it's much easier to get engaged in the story.

Those were my coherent thoughts. What I really have to say is:

I rather liked that VN actually.
The characters had interesting developments, and the MC is enough of a scumbag that he actually has a personality.

It holds true to the name; You can influence his actions, but you can't tell him what to do. Because, well, don't take it personally babe, it just ain't your story. It's his story.

That's true, though I personally never saw Rook as a scumbag. I mean, he has his scumbaggy moments, but generally he really does care about his students despite always whining about the drama, and they do really benefit from his advice, which is usually sound even when he's out of his depth (like when Nolan asks him about Akira - he doesn't miss a beat). Maybe it's just because I haven't completed the whole game yet, but he seems like a good guy so far, and he doesn't really show any voyeuristic tendencies despite what the tvtropes annotation says (spoiler: like when Kendall and Charlotte start messaging each other naked pics, he's more freaked out than turned on). Well, maybe it's just yet.

Outbreak Company's setting sort of reminded me of Zero no Tsukaima, but more comedy and without battles or domestic violence. Its a little harem-ish in structure (sex ratio-wise, but it doesn't really rely on the typical harem slap-stick stuff for it's comedy), but the MC is a cut above average - he doesn't act like a perv to the girls (or get constantly accused of being such), he's a nice guy and considerate yet not a wimp either.

Basically the main character is transported to a cliched tolkeinesque fantasy world and sets about educating the local humans, elves and dwarves about Otaku culture, it pokes fun at lots of anime and gaming tropes. All the other shows mentioned in Outbreak Company are distortions or bastardizations of existing shows, e.g. they often reference a popular show called Rental Madoka.

My take of it, it seemed to be that the main character is a bit too much of a moral guardian out to change things.  Turned me off on the whole thing so have not been back.

Outbreak Company's setting sort of reminded me of Zero no Tsukaima, but more comedy and without battles or domestic violence. Its a little harem-ish in structure (sex ratio-wise, but it doesn't really rely on the typical harem slap-stick stuff for it's comedy), but the MC is a cut above average - he doesn't act like a perv to the girls (or get constantly accused of being such), he's a nice guy and considerate yet not a wimp either.

Well, I took that more as a culture clash thing. e.g. if you were transported to a world resembling the pre-civil-war South with black slaves, etc, i'm sure you'd be outraged about that, and if you were given some slaves, you'd set about treating them right. It felt like a pretty realistic response, to me, to differing moral values between a medieval world and the modern world. And it was pretty insightful how the local ruling race - and the servant races - just didn't perceive the racism problem to even exist.

Maybe I saw it in the light that he tries to force his opinion on those around him, like his little outbursts in the presence of the loli queen person.  Might also be I'm of the mindset: "When in Rome..."

EDIT: Yea, I'm not the sort of person to be 'outraged' by slavery or any of that either... heck, I'd want to learn more about how the culture there works, not be like: "This shit is wrong."

So I have been on an anime kick recently, and I have watched a few shows.

Shows I liked:

Cowboy Bebop (I watched this a long time ago, still one of my favorites)
Attack on Titans (Of course)
Blue Exorcist
Kill la Kill
Arpeggio of the blue steel (I didn't think I would like this show, but I did... Not what I expected from the opening, at all.)
Another
Legend of the Legendary Heroes
Heroic Age
Bubblegum Crisis (Good for an old Anime, had character development and actual female leads (Who didn't suddenly need rescuing in the end!  Yay!)

Shows I disliked:

ALL THE FUCKING HAREM ANIME.  RANDOM GUY SURROUNDED SUDDENLY BY 10 LADIES WHO ARE INTERESTED IN HIM AND THEN CAN'T GET LAID.  MISUNDERSTANDINGS AROUND EVERY CORNER?  CHARACTERS WHO REFUSE TO COMMUNICATE?  LETS MADE 20 EPISODES ABOUT IT!

Anyone have any suggestions for shows based on my likes?  I like action and char. development in a good way.

Samurai Champloo is by the same guys as Cowboy Bebop, and has a similarly excellent dub, though one particular episode really doesn't work as well with the dub unfortunately. Definitely worth a watch for you I think.
