Just finished watching Sword Art Online. Now I need to find english version of the light novels and read those, so I don't have to wait for any more of the anime to come out, if it ever does. SAO is rather interesting when you get to think about what is the difference between a person in VR and IRL, and if a darkened morality in VR leads to a change in the person IRL.

Is the story of the 3rd season gonna be pants on head out of the ball park too?

I mean the 2nd season had some interesting elements, but it's hard to compare the 2nd season's story to the 1st. There was a lot more depth to the motivations and plot in the first one. All we get in the second one is "Asuna is kidnapped and helpless! I, as a big strong man, must save her!" And also a weird love triangle with his sister-but-not-really and her best friend or something. IMHO the end of the first series was a good ending point, and if they had left off there it wouldn't have been any worse off. However, I have to say that the end of the second series was actually okay, if still not really on par with the first.

Honestly I just gave up in disgust once the first part of the story ended. It's like the author got bored with his good idea and decided to skip to the end so that he could start a new story full of creepy fetishism and trite, tired plot. Seriously, the elf part is an absolute rotting gem. Let's count:

1. Interesting, competent character is reduced to helpless pretty princess to drive the plot. One point for lazy, one for creatively bankrupt.
2. Corrupt businessman takes comatose girl hostage, threatens to rape her, makes gloating monologues. One point each for creepy, creatively bankrupt, and lazy author.
3. Setting is pretty much a copy of the last one, except with more pointless fluff and no sense of danger or exploration of morality. Let's make that one point each for lazy and creatively bankrupt author.
4. "That fucking Japanese hangup again", AKA "We have the hots for each other and we are for all intents and purposes siblings, but it's okay because we're actually (first) cousins, even if there is also a fairly large age gap!", make that one point each for creatively bankrupt and creepy.
5. Kirito gets to keep all of his bullshit powers from SAO because author didn't want to have to detail him doing things to improve. Lazy. So lazy. I have no words for how lazy this is. It's almost like SAO wasn't plotted out ahead of time, so the power levels bloated too much for it to continue all the way up the tower, but the author didn't want to start over for the next part.

And I'm too put-out to continue. Eh, I stopped watching a few episodes after the SAO part of SAO ended anyways. :/

From what I've heard the GGO arc is quite a bit better than ALO. Not that its that difficult to be, but what I've heard of the plot does seem pretty interesting.

Marathoned psycho pass with a friend a few days ago, was a very interesting show. It started out a bit disjointed but i liked how it developed and the conclusion.

The most well executed part of the show i'd say was the ending, the way things didnt go over the top and stayed within a reasonable scope was great. The division's roster changed, many characters developed and others stayed the same (which is itself a valuable asset). The agreement between sibyl and akane was haunting, the way they phrased their final line to her, and the goddamn laugh "Go akane, live on and try to improve our society" (or whatever the exact wording was)

I do like shows about dystopias, but theres only a few others i know of like ghost in the shell and texhnolyze. If anyone has other suggestions that'd be cool.

I was under the impression that the ALO arc was still the first season, making the second season contain the GGO arc. And the whole sister love thing did annoy me, as welll as the helpless female that protagonist must save for the ALO arc. In fact all the females that just threw their love and adoration upon him in both arcs pretty much annoyed me.

The worst part of it is that, if SAO had just stuck to the premise and dropped some of the harem-y bits (particularly the creepy ones with she's-not-really-my-sister-I-swear and Silica), it would have been pretty damned good. The situation it reached near the end with Asuna, Kirito, and Yui managed to be both emotionally touching and an interesting examination of a number of different things, including: Bonding in life-threatening situations, the effects of forcing teenagers into situations where they must act as adults, both martially and romantically, human-AI interactions, the question of whether artificial beings can have a "soul", etc. And that's leaving aside all of the juicy stuff you can dig from the rest of the setting. It could have been sort of like The Legendary Moonlight Sculptor with a conflict more interesting than "I need to make lots of money" and more interesting philosophical/ethical issues.

But noooo, there just had to be the really creepy romances and the stereotypical helpless-princess plot and the shift from no-magic-all-melee fantasy/near-future SF juxtaposition fight-for-your-life to no-risks-Fly-at-will-magic-bullshit masculine power fantasy. For once I'm in favor of death of the author, in a remarkably proactive sense. Biggest letdown I've had from anything in a long, long time. I absolutely hate seeing a good premise wasted because the author/animation team couldn't refrain from doing stupid things with it.
