What are the other examples that I'm missing?

Seirei no Moribito, Spice and Wolf, Planetes?

I've heard things about Mushishi but never seen it, does that show count?
I probably have a bunch of such titles on my list of stuff to watch that I haven't gotten around to yet.

Record of Lodoss War could probably count. The StrikerS season of Nanoha, possibly, given that by that point it's basically a SF character drama about child soldiers and former child soldiers working in a counter-terrorist unit. LotGH for sure, that's space opera through and through, right down to the massive pile of characters and the battles that take ages to resolve.

Remember also that mature != violent/war-themed. There are almost certainly slice-of-life shows that are mature, but those have never really been my cup of tea. On the humor side, if you cast Azumanga Daioh with a bunch of 20-somethings or a bunch of middle-aged office workers, you'd be pretty much spot on. The surrealist bent of it combined with that style of humor would put it firmly in an adult demographic, if the characters weren't adorable schoolgirls dealing with contextually appropriate surface plots.

I was thinking about Lodoss but decided that it rather falls into the "dark" category, especially towards the latter half.
Of course, all three of the shows I mentioned previously also have a fairly grim bent. It's true that there is a bit of a lacking in terms of mature stories that are not particularly dark or depressing.

So I'm in the midst of the King Piccolo Saga in Dragon Ball

This has got to be the most depressing Saga ever. First Krillin dies, and later Master Roshi dies failing to perform the Mafuba, Chaozu dies trying to make a wish, Piccolo regains his youth and kills Shen Long. So basically their only hope now seems to be Tien sacrificing himself to perform the Mafuba, since there doesn't seem to be even anything Goku can do to become a match for Piccolo. And they won't be able to bring anyone back because Shen Long is dead.

Of course, I know from DBZ that all these guys will be brought back somehow, and I'm sure some sort of deus ex machina will appear to make things right, but it's currently not looking so good.

Also, this Saga has introduced Yajirobe panty shots, which, while not exactly soul-crushing, certainly doesn't make for a more pleasant experience.

Now that was intense. Th end of the fight where the backpacks assembled and just rammed each other was so great! I can't wait to see the Build Gundam MK-II in action.

I loved Mr. Rals speech on the serious business tendencies. It's great how self aware the show is. And yay, the Quebelay girl appeared! And an Immortal Colasour cameo XD

And oh dear, next week is fanservice beach. On the other hand Apsalus 3~~~

Oh I finished Grisaia no Kajitsu Saturday.  Angelic Howl's ending is kind of disappointing, however the beginning and middle were suitably depressing and cool.  Amane's bad ending was pretty awesome too,  but I've found the good endings to always be too sappy and boring (except Making of course).  Will play sequels.
