HEY GUYS. Sorry for the wait on posting the AMVs, I had to decide how I was going to do it.
So, how this is going to work is that I will periodically post AMVs from the stuff I've already got, and then I'll go out and hunt down more amvs when I start running out (which may take a while, actually). For now, I'm going to post something like one video from the Awesome category, two videos from the Great category, and one video from the Good category. This also reflects how many AMVs I have from each category (way more Greats than either Awesome or just Good).
The Awesome category has AMVs that are extremely impressive. They usually have a ridiculous amount of editing, the images sync to the music (as in to the beat), the images have something to do with the lyrics and/or the whole package is ridiculously thematically-appropriate.
The Great category has AMVs that are also very impressive, but they just don't have the amount of time and effort invested into them as the Awesome AMVs, or there are a couple other issues with them that keep them out of the Awesome category, or they would have only been Good but they do something that few other AMVs do at all and they do it well. There's not likely going to be much difference in your enjoyment between the Great and Awesome category, Greats just aren't the pinnacle of AMVs.
The Good category are AMVs that are simply enjoyable but aren't that impressive. They tend to focus on humor or romance, or they have a more general focus but they don't make the cut into the higher tiers.
Now, while I try to judge these on observable qualities, these are all still pretty biased selections. I have to enjoy them, after all. Also, feel free to share your own AMVs! I love finding good new ones.
ON TO THE AMVS! Now, for this first segment, I'm going to be giving you two Awesome AMVs. That's because I feel the first one is a bit of a cop-out because it's been linked in this thread before, but it definitely needs mentioning. I'm talking about the ridiculously thematically-appropriate AMV,
This is HalloweenCreator: Hagaren Viper
Anime: Soul Eater
Music: "This is Halloween" cover by Marilyn Manson
SFW?: Just violence
Spoilers: Not really. This AMV throws a bunch at you, but not in a way that anyone new to the series is going to feel like they were ripped off. It doesn't show the ending, it typically shows bits and pieces of the same parts at different times, and people are likely going to forget the details of what they saw.
Why is it Awesome?: This hits every criteria of the Awesome category. I have a good number of AMVs that require tons more editing than this one does, but it's still pretty impressive there. This is also why there's even a mention of "thematically-appropriate" at all. It just blows that idea out of the water. The song and the anime are perfect for each other.
This second Awesome AMV took a lot of time on what to decide on. I want to give a good first impression, ya'know? I eventually decided on the under-appreciated AMV,
LuwnaCreator: bnJ of Soul's Team
Anime: ... I don't even know, man. I still haven't identified the stuff being shown. I thought there was some massive edits of Naruto and TTGL, but I just couldn't match them up. Also, I swear there's a bit of an Old Navy television commercial in there. This came from a French team, so it's likely this is full of French stuff, but I have no idea and it never lists them.
Music: "Waiting" by Emma Hewitt
SFW?: Yep.
Spoilers: I don't think so? I have no way of telling, but I don't think they show enough of anything meaningful to any specific source material.
Why is it Awesome?: It's super artsy in a good way. It's got a bunch of crazy stuff happening, but the thing that connects it all is this sense of love. It's very provoking; thoughtfully, emotionally, etc. You just come away with a sense of having watched something beautiful. At least I do, anyway. There's likely a lot of personal bias in here since it's hard for me to describe. I can tell that it seems very professionally put-together, though.
Now that Awesome is out of the way, time to show AMVs from the Great category. I decided on what pair to show by selecting a theme. The theme is "Telling a completely different story than the source material". First up,
ChangeCreator: Heartilly
Anime: To Aru no Majutsu no Index (A Certain Magical Index)
Music: "It's Not My Time" by 3 Doors Down
SFW?: Just violence
Spoilers: Considering this tells a different story than the anime, it's not likely. I haven't seen Magical Index, so I can't say for certain. A good friend of mine who watched it told me about this telling a much different story, and from what we discussed I believe that to be the case.
Why is it Great?: Because it does something that few other AMVs do: it tells a different story than the anime by only using one anime (or primarily just one anime). Other AMVs can tell great stories by matching up different series, but with only one source material this takes some good planning and some clever connections. Not only that, but the clips and the lyrics match up as well. Still, it's not perfect: the edited-in text is often hard to make out without pausing the AMV, and I'm just not as impressed with the overall scope as I am with even other AMVs in the Great category. Still, I think it deserves to be where it is.
Next up is one that I was
really surprised with. I'll just go ahead and say that it's of Fullmetal Alchemist and FMA: B. The story? Mostly the same, except there's no Alphonse. Yeah. Check it out, it's called
TraumereiCreator: Umika
Anime: Fullmetal Alchemist/FMA: B (plus a bunch of others for effects, those are just the main 2)
Music: Globus by Orchard of Mines
SFW?: Violence, partial nudity
Spoilers: Yeah, I think you could consider this spoilery. Although I say that it's a different story, it's more like it's the same story just without the other main character. Because of that, there are some scenes that can be considered a spoiler. It's fine to watch if you've seen the majority of eithe FMA or FMA: B, though.
Why is it Great?: Honestly, this AMV would be probably be in the Good category if it wasn't so surprising at what it tried to do and did do. It could have been better, but its still really cool.
Now, for the Good category. This AMV pretty much sums up the category: just good old fun. I give you,
Darker than DuckCreator: Nicotine
Anime: Darker than Black
Music: Darkwing Duck cartoon opening song
SFW?: Extra violence, gore, etc.
Spoilers: Some of the fights are spoiled, yes, but you'll likely forget what you saw in the face of so much hilarity.
Comments: No real "Why is it Good?" bit for the Good category, because the category speaks for itself: simple enjoyment. Also, you guys might be wondering, "WHAT SORCERY IS THIS? ONLY 300+ VIEWS!? HOW DID YOU FIND THIS!?" I found it years back and have it downloaded to my harddrive, like all of the other AMVs that I'll be posting, and they apparently removed the original link. Therefore, you get this. I hope they didn't remove many of the other AMVs I have, because that will be upsetting when I try to go and post them here.
There you have it! Hope you guys enjoyed the AMVs.
